GDT: Kevyn Adams Press Conference -- The "Disconnect" Explained--11:00 am

Imagine being Kevyn Adams right now.

You've been an NHL general manager less than a year. Your top trade acquisition (Eric Staal) flamed out miserably. So did your top free agent acquisition (Taylor Hall). Your team endured a Covid-19 outbreak. Your head coach was such a disaster that he had to be fired. The team finished in last place in the NHL and missed the playoffs for a 10th straight year.

And Wednesday morning, you're going to be the one explaining to the hockey world what the heck is going on with The Disconnect.

Jack Eichel: There's a 'disconnect' with Sabres about recovery from injury

"I would be lying to say that things have moved smoothly since my injury,” said Eichel.

Capital letters intentional there. It's pretty clear that Jack Eichel, the face of the Buffalo Sabres for the last six years, doesn't want to be here anymore in part because the club and the captain can't agree on medical care for his neck injury.

If the Sabres were smart, we would turn on our video screens and Adams would be sitting at a table full of club medical officials explaining who said what to whom. And also taking us back to that abdominal issue Eichel said Monday has been lingering for over a year. But I'm not going to hold my breath on that one.

That's just one piece of the chaos. Adams has so many things to figure out here that it's easy to forget about this small dilemma of the interim coach. While Eichel, Sam Reinhart and Rasmus Ristolainen made it clear that each's first foot was out the door, the key young players all want Don Granato to get the job on a permanent basis.

IMO this is the most important interview/press conference we've had in a long time

Actions speak louder than words.  Today will be a lot of tap dancing.  What Adams does over the next 3-4 months will be much more important.

Maybe he should explain what qualifies him to keep his job.  Consider his moves and non-moves:

1) Traded for Staahl: FAIL

2) Signed Hall: FAIL

3) Traded Hall for peanuts: FAIL

4) Did absolutely nothing to address the biggest issue on the roster heading into the season, goaltending: FAIL

5) Stuck with RK for weeks after it was clear he had no answers: FAIL

6) Managed to alienate the best young player the Sabres have had in fifty years: FAIL

7) Oversaw the worst record in the NHL in his first season as GM: FAIL

Since we like to talk about qualifications around here, Kevyn Adams lacks them.  He has no prior track record of success to point to, and his brief Sabres track record is an unmitigated disaster.

I cannot believe he still has a job.

Eh. Johansson only had 14 points in 34 games vs Staal’s 10 points in 32 games. Not to mention we got a third and a fifth for him and he went on to have 3 points in 21 games. Ultimately I think this was a good move that didn’t work out and basically no one thought Staal would drop off a cliff.

Signing Hall was not a fail. He was the biggest name out there and we came out of left field and got him.

Trading Hall for peanuts wasn’t great; but Hall had an NMC and so there wasn’t really another option. The real issue here is that Hall wanted to be paid as a first line team carrying player whilst actually wanting to be a second line passenger. The fact he basically have up on the team after signing for that amount is the failing on him. He had a duty to be professional and was negligent.

Agreed on goaltending

Agreed on RK

Eichel situation doesn’t feel entirely Sabres fault. I actually think this team could be better off without him - if we get the right package back. Cozens and Dahlin is my hope for the team. I find it telling MCCabe watched ‘The Last Dance’ about MJ and said Eichel reminded him of MJ. Not sure I want that comparison in my captain.

Agreed on standings

I agree, I normally assign 0 value to press conferences and anything said within them.

But I honestly think the Sabres' image r.e. medical stuff can be rehabilitated if properly handled, and I think if he butchers this our stock around the league for players and coaching/FO hires can be tangibly affected

At some point he has to make a successful move of some kind, right?  What are the metrics he’s being evaluated by other than loyalty to his bosses?  The most you’re saying is that not everything was his fault - maybe not, but doesn’t he have to show success at SOMETHING?  He literally has failed in every single metric and transaction and again, it’s not like he has some previous track record of success to fall back on.  He’s a joke.

What did anyone expect from a guy who had zero qualifications for the job?  Don't forget he gave Hall the NMC and $8 mill.  Also don't forget that he is a TP yes man.

The bad news is he isn't getting fired.  The good news for the Sabres is that they have to hire a consultant or team President to educate the guy.

This is their MO - one of the reasons they’re addicted to rookie GMs is that they’re much easier to sacrifice.  Maybe we’ll get a Doug Whaley “not privy to” PC out of Adams today and then the pressure on the Pegulas will reach a crescendo.

The reverberating transaction that undercut the assets already on the roster and the intended added talents to the roster was the hiring of Krueger as the HC. It was an intriguing out of the box hire that turned out to be a disaster. The organization took a coach who was successful coaching a less talented Swiss team against more talented teams. His philosophy was to focus on stifling the more potent opposition and play a close to the vest game. That restrictive approach to hockey was not going to work with the more free flowing game played by talented offensive players in the NHL. The poster child for his preordained doomed approach is the suffocating of his own talent is exemplified by the play of Dahlin. He took a talented player with an expansive game and reduced it to a smaller and limited game.

This organization has made a lot of bad personnel decisions. But hiring Krueger and keeping him on longer than they should have was a crushing mistake that set this franchise back. I am a strong advocate for Granato. I thought he did a marvelous job under the circumstances. Others argue for hiring a coach with more experience. I'm not saying they are wrong; it's simply a difference of opinion. The priority is for this befuddled franchise to do their due diligence and make a sound coaching hire and then get to the task of putting the roster pieces back together.

Stay away from the hockey team! We don’t want to see or hear you!

Um, ignore that … Say something about the hockey team!

😂

The appetite for some fans to want to hear from Terry and Kim when “things happen” is strange to me.

I’d rather they say nothing and stay away…

Staal trade was fine - lowered the payroll of johansson and honestly he was at least "as good" as him.  At least he was a center.. who knew we didn't actually need a center though?  Not RK...

They got a decent enough return from montreal, and he sucked for them too.

The goaltending thing, the kahun thing, even teh montour thing - all tied up in hall imo.  They didn't tender kahun because they wanted hall, there was a debate on whether to tender montour as he was getting considerably more in arb than he'd get on the open market.

Goaltending should've been a trade target to get an upgrade at 1B.  Moving risto or another d-man could've facilitated.  Ullmark being healthy and this team is not in last place (43 goalies started more games than ullmark - nhl high was 44 of 56 games), we can all pretty much agree to that.  But in any spot duty whatsoever hutton was a disaster, tokarski and johansson arent good either.

He wasn't signing without the NMC.  The NMC guaranteed hall if it didn't work out here that he could go to a contender where he wanted to play.

I tend to agree except this seems to be a ship sinking and the captain missing.
