Barring any trades in off season before draft, whois on your Sabres protection list?

my 7 forwards are:

Eichel, Skinner(NMC), Reinhart, Mitts,Thomspon, Bjork, and Olofsson

3 defenseman are:

Dahlin, Joker, Borgen

goalie:

Ullmark

Who's exempt?  Asplund?  Bryson?  Ruots?

In any case - looks about right.  Funny that olofsson was like a future building block before the season, and now I view him as Kotalik.  I know they're taking him if he's exposed, but i can't help but think he's never going to be much more than a guy with a good shot who's probably overpaid.

Your exposing Ristolainen?  Asplund isn’t exempt.

Another case of bad asset management.  Borgen is very replaceable.  8 NHL games at 24 screams replaceable player.

If KA protects Bjork over Asplund and Borgen over anyone else he needs to have his head examined.

We are losing one player off the worst team in the NHL.  No biggie.

Pretty confident that the Sabres will trade a pick to Seattle for them to take Miller

Though Im also not protecting Bjork at this point.. maybe that changes in the next month. As of now Im protecting Asplund

I would like to see how Borgen does over the last month of the season. you've spent 5 / 6 years developing him. Would hate to see him gone for nothing.

I would like to keep Borgen, but let’s see how the offseason plays out leading up to the expansion draft.

One thing...before you say a player like Borgen is “very replaceable”, just keep in mind that on this years blueline we have Irwin, Davidson and Miller.

Assuming Ullmark re-signs and no other moves are made:

Protected:

7: Eichel, Reinhart Olofsson, Mitts, Tage, Asplund, Skinner (Girgensons if I can can convince Skinner to waive)

3: Dahlin Jokiharju, Ristolainen,

1: Ullmark

Exposed

Girgensons, Bjork, Okposo, Eakin, Borgen, Miller, Tokarski

Moves:

Get Ullmark to verbally agree to a deal but not sign it, leaving the goalie spot open

Trade a pick for a good backup some team was going to have to expose, protect him

Trade a pick for a solid forward some team is not able to protect

Give Seattle a pick in order to select Colin Miller

Not to mention he’s the only player in the entire system that hits AND fights regularly.   I know he’s not Dahlin but when a lone player has a skill set that is desperately needed by a team, he is invaluable in my eyes.

I'm with you, too. @dudacek's written out my list exactly. I'm guessing it requires that newly-acquired 3rd to get Seattle to bite on Miller. I still think they'll take Borgen over Miller + 3rd.

The only alternatives I have are if we feel it necessary to flush the long-term losing away or if I believe the Reinhart or Ristolainen is only here for one more year regardless. In which case, I'm leaving Reinhart or Ristolainen exposed in exchange for a bunch of goodies. But that's got to be another thread.

What are you offering to take Miller? He’s not been good.  I would require a second at minimum to take this player.  And then you have to ask yourself, is that satisfactory value to save the development invested in Asplund and Borgen.   It might be, but what if Seattle says they need our Second (not Boston) this year and next years third, what then?

I wouldn’t protect VO.  A 3 mm pp specialist? Francis isn’t that dumb.  Use it on Girgs.  His absence was felt on the bottom 6 and he does have a tad bit of grit. I could see Asplund as an alternative.  VO is creeping into Stafford territory in my contempt for his soft 5v5 play.

Are the Sabres smart enough to do that? Recent evidence says no.

The goal is to avoid a player you want to build around.  Risto is on an expiring deal and theoretically is an asset - so id protect him over borgen.  If we wanted to steer them away from a certain player - expect to pay a decent premium.

At this point in the season this has to be the primary focus so i would hope yes.  There's plenty of AHL schlubs we could call up.

Borgen also has to play 23 more games, so he will not have to be protected. After research I noticed that. Soyou can protect Risto if you have not traded him.

And i would... he has trade value at the very least.

I'd pay nothing about a 3rd round pick. Wasting picks to get a player you want protected is dumb.

Risto should be traded. If not, expose him and maybe they take him. I would bet MONEY that Seattle won't touch Ristolainen.

This is not true. Borgen has already topped the requisite number of pro games.

Exempt players

The Sabres have a lot of young players. It’ll pay off.

The list of exempt forwards features Dylan Cozens, Jack Quinn, Arttu Ruotsalainen, Brett Murray, Matej Pekar, Brandon Biro and Dawson DiPietro. The exempt defensemen include Mattias Samuelsson, Jacob Bryson, Oskari Laaksonen and Ryan Johnson. Top goalie prospect Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is also off-limits.

I'm reluctant to lose a player who has some value for nothing.  If asplund and borgen dont need to be protected youre looking at Bjork, Girgensons, Okposo, Eakin, Miller.  They might take Miller out of that group without the pick.

Asplund and Borgen need to protected or they will be exposed in the draft.

Okay so let them. Asplund and Borgen both need protection.

I have no idea what Seattle thinks of Borgen or Miller, but I would be surprised if it took that much. It wasn't even two years ago Miller was traded for a 2nd and a 5th.

Colin Miller is a NHL hockey defenceman in his prime on an expiring middling contract. Guys like that are worth 3rd-round picks.

He's not good, but he's hardly a negative value. On an expansion team he probably gets those PP minutes he never got here and pads his stats again, then gets flipped at the trade deadline for a pick as a rental.

Do you honestly think you'd get a single team in the league to give up a 2nd round pick for Will Borgen. Maybe a 3rd?

Seattle's position is complicated given the expansion rules. But in a vacuum, I'd say there is even a chance they'd prefer Miller to Borgen flat out.

I don't think any of those like 7 exposed players are true building blocks.  Asplund has looks of a solid bottom 6 forward.  Borgen looks like he could be a decent defensive defenseman.

Okposo won't be picked.  Eakin won't be picked (assuming they've watched him play hockey).  Bjork and Asplund are both young guys with some bottom 6 upside - i do like asplunds shot.  Borgen i watched play like 4 games and I thought he looked alright.  Girgensons is coming off a major injury and is probably somewhat overpaid.

Several of them fetch nothing in a trade, and others would fetch very little.  Plus you get to protect 1 of the forwards.

Depends what other defensemen are available in the expansion draft.

Like LGR said, this contradicts what I have seen, can you show where you found this?

My point is I don't care who they pick. I am not paying them a premium to take player X unless that player is Skinner who has a monster contract.
