Jonas Johansson makes his first start for COL tonight.

This is a funny thread.  JJ is not very good right now.  He is a good AHL starter or a crappy NHL backup.  He is a #3/4 goalie.

He is young enough that there is still a slim chance of him improving a bit and becoming a serviceable NHL backup, but he isn’t right now.  Also, he is going to be a UFA at the end of this season anyway.

We traded a couple months of a #3/4 goalie for a 6th round pick.  This is a nothing trade.

Too soon?  He’ll be 26 in a few months.  Are we giving prospects until 30 to prove themselves?

Goalies? Yes, they get much longer. Most goalies don't hit their ceiling until they're 27-28 years old.

Cal Petersen is 26 years old (he'll be 27 this October) and he's just starting to come into his own as a starting goalie for the Kings.

Ben Bishop went through the same kind of development path.

Dominik Hasek wasn't a starter until he was like 29 years old or something like that.

Again, goalies develop at a slower pace and require a lot more time than any other position...which is why we need to be patient with Luukkonen and Portillo.

We really think Jonas Johansson is going to be a good NHL goalie?

Cal Petersen btw has a sv% .02 above what he did when he played 11 NHL games 2 years ago. It is .04 above what he did in 8 games last year. Me thinks it has less to do with Cal coming into his own and LA finally realizing or accepting that Quick isn't the answer anymore.

I am reluctant to label any goalie as young as Johansson, UPL, etc. as a bust at their age.  Dominik Hasek was 28 when he took the Sabres' job from Grant Fuhr.

Completely different set of circumstances. Also UPL is 22 and Johansson is 25, that's a big difference for goalies.
