Recommended Posts

Since his GM start date of June 16th, 2020. This first post will hopefully stay current throughout his tenure. It may take a day or two or three depending when i get a chance to update it. So posters ... help me out. Who has he hired? Who has he fired? Who has he acquired? Who has he drafted? Who has he traded? Any and all things he's done since June 16th 2020. And the date of it too would be great! Thanks!

  • Zamboni changed the title to Everything Kevyn Adams has done as Sabres GM

In this Interview Terry Pegula mentions that Brandon Beane has sat across from His Desk and done everything but threaten Terry’s Life when it comes to arguing about players.  Pegula also mentioned He only argues when he thinks he knows something.

This portion starts at the 22:50.

My question is would Kevyn Adams, who has known the Pegulas much longer, feel comfortable or more importantly would he argue the merits for taking a player or not taking a player even if Pegula was insistent on doing so?

Putting the right leadership in place for the Bills has made all the difference in the world, this team has undergone light years in improvement in three seasons and that appears to be the result of allowing management to do their jobs.

The right leadership would be great, but the NFL GM’s aren’t saddled with guaranteed contracts.  They are also drafting guys with 3 years of added maturity compared to NHL GM’s is a huge plus.  Honestly, I think NFL GM’s have an easier job, despite the failures in Buffalo for 25 years.

I honestly don’t know yet if KA is the right guy or if RK is the right coach.  RK improved the D system, but was a failure last year with the special teams.  Overall KA did a solid job in his 1st off-season but he made some mistakes.  He added Staal and Hall for a year and that’s great, but aren’t long-term solutions.  He also failed to address the goaltending and overpaid to keep Tage and Girgensons.

Just a note on this.  I honestly don’t believe that the Thompson contract is an overpay.  If it was a 1 year deal, then yes, but the value of it is that it’s 3 years.  Thompson would not have signed a 3year deal for the minimum.  Even if he shows that he is a good player this season, he now won’t be able to get a raise until the 2023-24 season.

Whether or not it’s a good contract will be born out by Tage’s play.  The contract isn’t inherently a bad contract.  It is a bet on Tage though.

But there is also a good chance he gets beaten out by other guys like Mitts or Routsalainen or Redier etc for a job and then your paying 1.4 for a guy for 3 years that can’t make your roster.

Alternative future:  But there is also a good chance that he does make the team and is able to contribute as a middle 6 winger scoring 15+ goals, in which case you are getting him for 3 years at a bargain of 1.4.

Like I said, whether it’s a good contract will be born out by Tage’s play.  It’s not inherently a bad contract.  Obviously, Adams thinks that your scenario is not likely, we’ll see if he is right.

The Thompson contract vs. the Mittlestadt contract should be a very good indication of where they are ranked within the organization.  IMO there is very, very little risk that Thompson gets beat out for a roster spot by Casey.  So little that it probably isn't worth the energy of this post.  Reider is a real possiblity tho and  Roots is an unknown.

Yes and no.  Mitts had no leverage and therefore had to accept the QO.  Thompson is a year older and KA gave him a deal that covered all his remaining RFA years.  Again a stupid contract for an unproven player that might work out if he becomes and NHL regular, but was completely unnecessary.

Also Mitts beats him out in camp, management will have no problem playing Mitts over him regardless of their relative status right now.

That was a different management group and a head coach who may have had to keep Mitts because jbott.

What does Jbot have to do with this coming camp?  KA and RK will put the best team on the ice.  If Mitts is better in camp then Thompson, he’ll make the team.

Your sentence structure was unclear. That said, Mitts won't beat him out and if it's close, Mitts goes down because no waivers.

I think it's clear this management group believes more in Tage.

Lol you are the last holdout.  It’s pretty apparent that the team values Thompson more, thus the negotiating.

You are correct that Mitts will need to beat him out in camp.  The consensus around the team sure appears to be that this would be quite unexpected.

I’m not a holdout, it’s just a fact.  Mitts is more talented then Thompson and if he is better in camp he'll win the job.  I didn’t say he will.  In fact in the Mitts thread, I think it’s more likely that Mitts earns his job mid-season do to injury or someone else’s poor play.

Absolutely NFL GMs have an easier job compared to their NHL Counterparts. That being said Beane has the confidence in himself to argue with Pegula and to tell him no on personnel decisions, which has lead the Football Department being in charge, resulting in better decision making for the Bills.

On the other hand, Terry fancies himself a hockey guy and there is concern in some circles that Adams is the perfect yes man to do His Bidding. Pegula has had a hand in Leino and Ernhoff signings, Skinner’s and Eichel’s Deals (The Latter being a great move) and most recently the Zemgus Extension. He appears to override The Hockey Department in many instances often with detrimental consequences.  Adams has known the Pegulas much longer and should feel comfortable telling him no when it comes to hockey decisions.

Tom Dundon was featured in an article by The Athletic where he was described as the most meddlesome owner in the NHL. Yet he is  smart enough to listen to Hockey Department and let them make decisions.

In terms of Adams, Staal was always going to be a stop gap for a year while Cozens developed. Hall is here primarily because of Krueger and the Sabres willingness to pay 8 million for one year. If their is chemistry between Hall and Eichel maybe a long term deal isn’t out of the question.

I will reserve judgment of the goalie situation, until the season starts. As maybe the Stephan Trade was a domino for Arizona moving a goalie.

As Tage has to clear waivers, if he cannot make the Sabres there is a chance that a team such as Detroit, Ottawa or LA might take a chance and claim him as he does have size and talent.

If Krueger runs with Hall-Eichel-Reinhart with a Risto-Montour Pairing that would solidify what type of coach he is.

No, its not a fact.  I no longer think Mitts is more talented.  He has better hands than Thompson.  What other NHL skill does Mitts demonstrably show better than Thompson? Thompson had shown more in every other way.  Mitts is not more talented.

Mitts WAS a better prospect.  Past tense.

In the spring in 2019, when Tage was sent down, Mitts was ahead of Tage in the view of pretty much everyone here.

Since then, Tage has played 24 AHL games, enough for Weave to say Tage has clearly improved

And Casey has played 35 AHL games, nowhere near enough for LGR say Casey could have possibly improved.

Really interesting in seeing what each brings this year.

Mitts WAS a better prospect.  Past tense.

What exactly has Thompson done in the NHL to show he is more talented?  Mitts has better hands and wheels.

Thompson (NHL) 66 7 5 12 pts    .11 g/gp  .18 p/gp

Mittelstadt (NHL) 114 17 22 39 pts   .15 g/gp   .34 p/gp

Thompson (AHL) 54 20 19 39 pts    .37 g/gp  .72 p/gp

Mittelstadt (AHL) 36 9 16 25 pts   .25 g/gp  .69 p/gp

Mitts has out-performed Thompson at the NHL level and basically equaled Thompson's AHL numbers except goal scoring, which isn't a surprise given Thompson is supposed to be a goal scorer.  Thompson main attribute is size and an extra year of experience.    This is just a case of Mitts being this board's new whipping boy because he lost his confidence mid-season last year and remains the whipping boy despite being sent down and playing well.

Who gives a sh!t what either has done to this point in the NHL? A 22 and 23 YO shouldn't be expected to have done anything in the NHL unless it's with a completely dysfunctional franchise.

They are both poised to to be completely useful NHL players.
