How well did teams do with drafting in the 5th round?

As anyone with eyes could see, for the 6th and 7th round, the Buffalo Sabres did no worse, and no better than the vast vast majority of teams. So they didn’t “under perform” or "over perform" compared to almost every team.

Who’s had NHL time? So i took a 10 year sample. From 2008 - 2017. In my opinion it’s too soon to judge anyone drafted in the 5th round in 2018 or more recently to determine if a team drafted well in the 5th. If you disagree, then post the more recent years if you want. I added the Buffalo picks (if there are any) just to see the names. And yes, i am well aware that this round is pretty much a crap shoot, but i think there’s no harm in giving a little credit to the teams.

In my opinion, Buffalo did no worse or better than most of the teams in the 5th round. Of course it t would have been nice to grab one or two gems. Some teams grabbed a gem or two in this 10 year span. Ottawa overall, did pretty well in this 10 year period.

Thanks for putting this together.

If I'm reading this right the only 5th round pick we've had in the last decade that's played a in the NHL is Cal Peterson?

Seems not great but it's rare those late round picks pan out which is why I never really care who we draft after round 2. I'm sure Olofsson would like a word.

Doubly so! I look forward to round 4. Thanks, @Zamboni!

I'm of two minds on this round. The positive: Hey, Cal Petersen still has a good shot to be a regular NHL-level goalie, whether starter or backup, and make a career of it. So --- we hit on one pick (not the development/retention, but the pick). I don't know if we'd have had to protect him in the Vegas expansion, but an Ullmark/Petersen tandem last year would've been nice.

The negative is across an entire decade --- almost nothing! We had one player (the first, 2008's Lagace) even make a minor impact in the minor leagues. None of the others even made a contribution in Rochester. They're all longshots, sure, but looking through the list:  Griffith, O'Regan, Varone all are top-6 AHL-caliber players. Tokarski will be a fine AHL player for Rochester this season. That's what I'd expect to see in this round over 10 years: an AHL veteran-type player here or there. It's not like we had the talent to hold them off the Pirates/Amerks roster. That's Bantha fodder-level drafting.

No better or worse?  How did you get that that?

None of our picks ever played a game except for a goalie that played 19 games and would not sign with us.

That is terrible.   Really bad.

I think what this exercise is proving that most teams are terrible or really bad.
