How well did teams do with drafting in the 7th round?

Who’s had NHL time? So i took a 10 year sample. From 2007 - 2016. In my opinion it’s too soon to judge anyone drafted in the 7th round in 2017 or more recently to determine if a team drafted well in the 7th. If you disagree, then post the more recent years if you want. I added the Buffalo picks (if there are any) just to see the names. And yes, i am well aware that this round is a crap shoot, but i think there’s no harm in giving a little credit to the teams.

2007 Draft

Pick number/Drafting Team/Player/Position/NHL games played/Goals/Assists/Points/PIM’s/Last NHL season

187 Buffalo Nick Eno G

194 Toronto Carl Gunnarsson D 617 30 106 136 173 2019-20

200 Minnesota Carson McMillan R 16 2 3 5 11 2013-14

201 San Jose Justin Braun D 669 27 146 173 244 2019-20

203 San Jose Frazer McLaren L 102 4 7 11 264 2013-14

205 Atlanta Paul Postma D 205 10 25 35 51 2017-18

209 Buffalo Drew Mackenzie D

Those few are the only players to ever play any time in the NHL. So, in my opinion, Buffalo drafted just as “poorly” as the vast overwhelming majority of teams in that round. San Jose drafted well this round!

209 Pittsburgh Scott Wilson L 193 20 31 51 58 2019-20

A good chunk of players from this year have seen NHL action. Still the vast majority of teams drafted just as “poorly” as Buffalo. So, Tampa, Ottawa and Pittsburgh stand out to me that year for this round.

7th rounders are long shots (or luck) picks for sure. Rare to get a great one, but if you do your franchise can take great strides forward.

here's a decent short list of late round greats: https://thehockeywriters.com/the-best-late-round-nhl-draft-picks/

Our best one as I mentioned in the other thread was Christian Ruuttu in the 7th and Uwe Krupp in the 11th of the same year, wow!

So we were 1 for 12. Below average as usual

Below average like the vast majority of other teams. Which isn’t really below average when comparing them. I think during that time frame only 4 or 5 teams drafted “well” in the 7th. But as you know, the 7th is such a crap shoot with the results shown here.

We should do this with 2nd and 3rd picks. Would probably be interesting.

Or frightening

I don’t believe 8.3% is below the league average for percentage of 7th rounders making the NHL.

Actually the average of a 7th rd pick playing 100 games plus  is about 12%

You'd need a confidence interval to figure out the spread of variance on a standard distribution.

If it is about 12% and the CI is +/- 2 then the Sabres at 8.7 are probably 1 7th rounder off the average for a sample of 10 years.

I think your over thinking this.

Forget the 7th round....Sabres haven't drafted anyone who has done anything outside the top 2 picks in the first round in a while now and that is embarrassing...teams are drafting superstars in the mid teens and 20s and even the 2nd and 3rd rounds at times and we can't even get a guy who can make an NHL roster picking in the top 10...
