pretty good deal for Edmonton. Personally I would've rather we pay Kahun the contract that Girgensons received, or how about split it between the 2 of them? It is what it is i guess.

I'll be curious to see how he works out for them & hope i don't curse KA for not re-signing him later this season lol.

That's a bargain.  I would have preferred keeping him at numbers well above this.

Well, yeah.  But it seems the Sabres couldn't get him to agree to not go to arbitration & he would've likely gotten a contract well above this because of that.  Had he been willing to sign for ~$1.3MM wouldn't have been at all surprising to sign him, but have to believe he expected much more.  And getting anything close to Olofsson would've had them right against the cap at best.

The reason Kahun accepted this is the game of musical chairs is starting to come to an end & he decided it was better to have a wobbly chair in the NHL rather than a nice one somewhere in Europe.  Have to believe he could've had a nicer 1 here but he thought he could get a much nicer one back when the Sabres had to give him a chair or let him walk.  Turns out, he couldn't.

What did the Sabres see/not see in Kahun to force him to go elsewhere? Seriously....  Is the a legit logical “strike” against Adams? Or a smart move?

it's a bad move but i think it shows that the sabres have a lot of faith in tage thompson right now

How was it a bad move when viewed as part of the full composite of what they've done this off-season?  He was 22 when he signed his ELC so he was arbitration eligible this year.  He doesn't have a solidified 2nd line role but likely would've gotten close to a young 2nd liner's salary had he gone through arbitration.  This team couldn't give a guy with no defined role more than Thompson will be getting IMHO.

Exactly.

And even though the Sabres could have offered a little more than he ultimately got, no way Kahun was coming back at a massive discount from what his original ask was, tail between legs.

All said and done Sabres come off looking pretty good here.

How exactly?

Kahun wanted arbitration or what was likely 1.8mil plus per year.

Adams said no thank you

Kahun tests the market and is unable to reach his target salary.

His agent, at very least, rather not return to Buffalo having been proven wrong and instead Kahun decides to play with his good friend on Edmonton.

Good thing we gave Thompson 1.4 per season, after all he has so outperformed Kahun in his career.

Do you believe Kahun was willing to sign a $1.4MM x 2 yr deal back when the Sabres had to decide whether to offer him a QO?

If so, why?  Haven't seen any evidence at all that he'd've been willing to do so (other than his signing a deal for less ~1 month later after nearly everyone's cap has been allocated, which is NOT evidence he was willing to sign for that back then).

This is reminiscent of the Timmy Kennedy story.  It played out almost exactly opposite but was based, like that one, on what appears to be an overinflated value of what his services were worth.

Have nothing against him & hope he plays well.

And if he wouldn't sign for that, then Thompson's dea, didn't impact his negotiation.

KA read the market right for Kahun, but wrong on Thompson., Girgensons and Eakin.  Given that Eric Haula is still un-signed  and what guys like Kahun, Larsson and Galchenyuk signed for, KA could have upgraded the bottom six for less money then he paid, and added higher quality depth.

He should have given Thompson a one year prove it deal for his QO.  He should have given Z two years at the market rate which would have been at about 1.6 or less, but overall he should have been more patient.    Same for Eakin.

Had he not overpaid for these three, we’d might have signed a Galchenyuk or kept Kahun as well.  Then Thompson would have to earn his way on the ice instead of being guaranteed a starting job.
