Victor Hedman's workout, how he became the best

Dahlin can be the best NHL defensemen of his generation. Hedman is probably the best of his generation.

So how did Hedman get there? Well it apparently started with his workout routine that he changed and boy did it yield results.

That quick acceleration that Hedman now has on the ice, it started with improvements he made on the track in Ovik. One of the tests Dettner uses is a 10-meter dash, where Hedman has gone from 1.73 seconds in 2013 to 1.61 last year. That’s .12 in seven years. It may not seem like much, but Dettner puts it in hockey terms.

“From blue line to blue line, that’s more than a club length,” Dettner said. “That’s why opponents are so frustrated. He’s as good at accelerating and change of direction as really good 5-foot-11 players.”

One of the best drills for that is the STAC 10-5-10 agility track. You run 10 meters forward, turn around in a 180 and go 5 meters back, then turn 180 again and go 10 meters forward. It’s a total of 25 meters. Hedman would do it four times in a row. From there, Dettner can track patterns in acceleration, change of direction, stability, all planes of motion and a total time.

idk what this means or what it is trying to mean.

In the Matt Ellis of Matt Ellis threads, it was proposed that, not being the most talented player, Ellis will be a good pro development guy because he had to work hard to make it to the NHL and can teach those traits to the youngens. But someone who's uber talented wouldn't be a good pro development guy because it came to him too easily — you can't teach talent. With Hedman you can see he works hard to make it look easy. My thought was that that's true of all the greats. How many times do you think Sidney Crosby practiced that short side, top shelf flick? If anything, what I think would hold back a superstar from being a good teacher or coach would be not understanding how everyone doesn't want to work as hard as they did, be as absolutely committed as they were — not that someone drafted into the NHL didn't have enough "talent."

Interesting.
