Totally realizing that's a hypothetical, but hoping that wasn't the trade Botterill still expects to be on the table whenever Calgary is eliminated as Larsson becomes a UFA whenever the new league year starts unless Botts does some fancy talking to his agent soon.

Can't they hypothetically make a deal after Calgary is eliminated?

They could, but not getting any usage out of Larsson at all prior to having to try to convince him to stay in Calgary probably significantly decreases the value Calgary places on him.

Technically, but a lot of it comes down to exactly what the trade parameters were.

We know Calgary didn't see Risto = Monahan yet Larsson + Risto and a lesser unknown = Monahan and Bennett

So based on that, unless we do a sign and trade, we would need some reworking done.

That being said if Calgary gets booted yet again perhaps his value goes down. Its a very interesting situation.

They did make 2 deals for defensemen at the deadline - but both were pure rentals.  I assume Risto would have taken one of their places, or just helped their banged up blue line.  4 UFAs at Defense there, and Andersson gets a raise.

Monahan has a modified NTC that kicks in for 2020-2021, so this probably doesn't matter anyway.

Here is a question for my local CBA expert. Since the first games aren’t being considered playoffs, could not a team make a trade now to help them in play in round? Obviously players acquired couldn’t play in playoffs, but.......

Last I heard, they hadn't decided if the play in round is playoffs or not.  That's still to be negotiated.

IF they aren't playoffs, then a player SHOULD be available for that round.  But doubt any GM is going to be forward enough thinking to steal an Iginla for less than a Nieuwendyk.

Thing that would be really interesting / entertaining would be to see Moe-ray-all trade a UFA to Pittsburgh (or Chicago trade with their opponent) to bolster next year's roster & to have a 12.5% chance of a top 3 pick if one of the picks get won by a placeholder.

The other owners & GMs would have kittens.

Isn't that technically true in the regular playoffs? The teams will still likely wait

It's likely they will.  But there MIGHT be some minor moves later while the playoffs are still going on to accommodate not having European prospects go back home in October because they don't know that they've got an inside track to a spot on the big club roster or to make room for expected upcoming signings to stay below the 50 contract limit.  Wouldn't put money on any moves, but could see something really small which already occassionally happens.

2c is only part of the equation here. We also need better goaltending and we need to stop using that passive 1-1-2 pk (I believe that is what we use right?). Without fixing the pk and goaltending a 2c will just help one factor. We need to address all 3.

And getting the PP to produce at a level it should. With all this talent our PP should be much better

How much blame does RK deserve for our pathetic special teams?

Certainly a majority, along with his assisrants.

The team would seem to have the talent for an above average PP (Eichel, Dahlin, Olofsson, Reinhart, Risto) and PK near average.

As opposed to 20th in PP and 30th in PK.

Plenty of talent.  Not enough determination IMO.  Jack spoke to that in his Zoom interview.  We've got alot of softness in that PP lineup.

Unfortunately he’s keeping the same assistants.

Olofsson doesn’t belong on the top line. He should be on 2nd line and Skinner should be back with Jack. We have no other 2nd line players. That is on Botteril.

I think Kahun is a 2nd line RW.

It does seem like they are getting a little carried away with the CONTINUITY aspect. We needed a couple new assistants. We are bringing everyone off ice back after a terrible season. My suspicion is we aren't likely to see a ton of on-ice turnover, either.

What is the good of keeping a continuous coaching message if they have to reteach everyone? Vesey, Johansson, Simmonds..they all know Ralph already. I can see that being their thinking. The big cap space summer to turn over the roster mentality seems to be at odds with their stated continuity goal.

Do we think Botterill has a preference for left shot left wings on the right wing of the second line? We've had a left shot there since he got here. Maybe just a coincidence.

Maybe.  A Left shot on the RW has the advantage of his shot closer to the middle of the ice and the disadvantage of their stick on the backhand near the boards.

Vanek was very successful as a right shot on the left wing.
