OT - Classic Rock All Star Band

Recommended Posts

Since we have no hockey to talk about, I thought I'd start an all star classic rock band thread.  Most of this is from the 60's and 70's so I apologize to our younger members.  Here is my all star list.

Keyboards, Vocals - Steve Walsh - Kansas
Lead Guitar, Vocals  - Terry Kath - Chicago
Rhythm Guitar - Jimmy Page - Led Zeppelin
Bass Guitar, Vocals - Paul McCartney - The Beatles
Drums - Keith Moon - The Who

Producer - Tom Scholz - Boston

Picking this list was harder than trying to fix the Sabres.  Hack away!

Oh, this will be fun.  I am not the expert so many others are.

Keyboard, Vocals:      Richard Wright, Pink Floyd

Lead Guitar, vocals:    Prince

Rhythm Guitar:            Malcolm Young, AC/DC

Bass Guitar:                Bootsy Collins (oh, we want the funk)

Drums:                          John Bonham.  Period.

Producer .....                 I got nothin’.

Keyboards, Vocals -          Stevie Wonder
Lead Guitar,   -                    Stevie Ray Vaughan - w/David Bowie and w/Double Trouble
Rhythm Guitar, Vocals -   John Lennon - Beatles
Bass Guitar, Vocals -         Sting - The Police
Drums -                                Dave Grohl - Foo Fighters

Producer -                          George Martin - Beatles

This was tougher than I thought it would be. George Martin was the only unanimous choice for me.

2nd Choices Ray Manzarek, Eric Clapton, Bob Weir, John McVie, Neil Peart and Alan Parsons (who produced Abbey Road, Dark Side of the Moon and Year of the Cat among others)

How is Paul Rodgers or Roy Orbison not mentioned.

Truth is, if he wanted to, Prince could have been the best on all instruments.

But, since I decided to post, I will modify the question with those I’ve seen.

Justin Hayward

Eric Clapton

Joe Strummer

Billy Sheehan

Carl Palmer

Producer Todd Rundgren

Palmer was amazing live. I’m not artistically savvy enough to know if he was technically sound but he put on quite the show.

Yup. Saw  him with ELP and Asia multiple times...he's still touring btw with a crew that plays the old ELP and some other prog rock sort of stuff.

Man, that's a great line up.  Prince was so under rated as a guitarist.   And Billy Sheehan was, well he's F'n Billy Sheehan.  These are all tough choices.

And Burton Cummings as a keyboard and lead vocal was way up there.

And Jeff Lynn as a producer is in the conversation.

I’m surprised Neil Peart doesn’t get more love. Pound for pound, he was IMO a better drummer than a few names I’ve seen. But to each his own...

I chose Palmer but could sub in Peart, Bonham, Moon, Baker...so many.

Heck, could make a second team across the board as good as the first. (Hendrix, Joe Cocker, Entwhistle...)

My daughter would insist that was true as well. We had a long debate on that and didn't convince each other fully but she did give me a partial victory over the idea that they were not a boy band, because they were not assembled by another person and they wrote their own material. Everything else about them does fit the definition though, at least in the early days where they were somewhat pre-FAB-ricated. Regardless though, McCartney as the classic rock bassist? Kidding right? He can sing some nice harmonies for you and write a few decent pop songs but he was never a great bass player.

I don't really know what "classic rock" is because it's just old music for an aging demographic and it changes. Used to be all 60's, then 70's, now it's often 80's. It means nothing. I mean look above, we got Joe Strummer and Carl Palmer in the same musical category? Punk and prog? Yikes, somebody's spinning in their grave.

So I could go in multiple directions with this and it would depend on the sound you wanted but nobody from Rush will be in it.  ever.

lead guitar - Jimi Hendrix. There is substance to the legend.

rhythm guitar - Keith. Cause he's Keith, and if you disagree we send someone to stab you.

bass - John Paul Jones. Just crank the Immigrant Song and then get back to me if you still disagree.

drums - Keith Moon. Two crazy Keiths, this band is doomed.

vocals - Iggy Pop. then, not now, so Iggy Stooge.

keyboards - umm, I wanna kind of pass, I mean do we need them with this lot? so I'll just throw in........

producer - John Cale and he can chuck in a few keys here and there when needed.

Damn this assemblage would kick ass.

It's tough to pick.  So many to choose from.  I will say that Jimmy Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best guitarist he ever heard.  And Robert Plant said that Burton Cummings was the best vocalist he ever heard.  But like Herb Brooks said, "We're not looking for the best players, we're looking for the right players."

Jimmy Page as Rhythm Guitarist?  Surely you jest.  In my book he’s alone as the top Lead Guitarist..
