Curious case of Rasmus Dahlin

When I evaluate Dahlin, I think ... What’s his age? How many years has he been in the league? Has he shown improvement since his rookie year? Who are his linemates? How is he utilized in RK’s system?

IMO, He could be better, but far from a disappointment in any way and I have every confidence he’ll continue to get better. His talent is very obvious to those who watch closely. His start of peak years are 3-5 years away from now.

He has regressed offensively and more so defensively, but he's so young and the long term prognosis remains strong.

Don't look for him to blossom until Year 4 or 5 of his career, IMO.

He’s regressed offensively??  Isn’t he the second highest scoring teenage D to ever play the game?  Like better numbers then teenage Bobby Orr?  Wow, I couldn’t disagree more with this take.

I've honestly been wondering if we should've taken Andrei Svechnikov...the kid is an absolute stud and only getting better. (Granted, Dahlin still is too.)

EDIT: This doesn't have as much to do with Dahlin, as it does with how putrid our offense is.

It's undeniable that the inability to enjoy, appreciate and understand Dahlin is a product of how bad the Sabres are and have been. I might be a close second to inkman in the "yeah, whatever" camp. Our fellow fans have to ruin it us for by going wayyyy overboard with the praise, predictions etc. I brace myself every time Dahlin does something defenseman-ish.

Stats show the opposite offensively...he averaged 0.54 points per game last year and he is averaging 0.66 points per game this year.  Not a huge improvement, but still an improvement. He also is averaging a little under 2 minutes less per game of ice time too.

I like his game. Once he puts on muscle, gains more confidence and maturity he will be a dominant D in this league.

He can stick handle in a phone booth and his skating is elite. He makes mistakes but he’s only 19. He lacks a sense of urgency sometimes, but that is probably what gives him a coolness under pressure.

He may amass points like Brian Leetch but won’t be a defensive liability like that guy was.

He reminds me more of Salming than Lidstrom.

He's one of the reasons I watch.  He makes a gaff or two, but makes just as many wow moments.  He's only going to get better.  Patience.

I would say the gaffs have largely been eliminated.  He still gets beat on plays but given a certain situation it seems less frequent that you can say he played it wrong.  Sometimes the other team just has better positioning or numbers and he makes the right decision, he just got beat.  It used to be that he frequently made mental errors; I don't see those much, if at all, anymore.

This is where I’m at. In order to have those wow moments you’re going to have some gaffs. Face it. His competition is good. Look at Hughes and Makar. They make things happen but are given the leeway to go for it and there are gaffs.

I don't really know enough about the nhl game and positioning, coaching, etc to really have a great idea how he is doing.

However, it seems that D-Men usually need more time than Forwards to reach their potential.  With that said, I'm still hopefully he can/will be a Norris trophy caliber D-man eventually. For now, I just want him to get better every year.  I really don't care if he kills penalties..but by next year I hope he is good enough to be leading the D-men in even strength and PP ice time.

Being a pedant, I can't believe I made that gaffe.  Thanks for the correction and education.  I am disappointed in myself.

You are sentenced to a 500-word report on the Sabres' penalty kill.

This is where I'm at. I and the franchise need a grown-ass Rasmus Dahlin with facial hair and missing teeth leading the way to playoff runs. Until then, I watch, but I don't necessarily like seeing sausage being made.
