If Bogo signs with Boston and plays to the same level he did last year during an extended playoff run, he will earn himself a multi-year deal this summer.

Right now, he is looking at a PTO.

I think anyone with money in the bank and a level of personal self-confidence would bet the $1.4

We all are expecting the Sabres to release / terminate the contract with Bogosian's blessing.

Has this actually been confirmed?  Right now as of the last update from the Sabres, he is suspended but not cut outright.  He and his agent can't talk to any other teams about a possible contract while he is still under contract to the Sabres.

Bogo has been mailing it in?

Also is the lesson you can bring negative value to the team for several years and continue getting paid your millions, but then the last 30 games of the last year of your contract, you will be waived?  So it’s a message to Skinner that he might get waived 7 years from now???

Maybe two years from now. Hope he starts scoring again

I was assuming it is some sort of procedural thing. First step suspend, then terminate?

Don't see why they'd suspend him if they're agreed that he'd walk away from the contract.  The situation that is similar would be Kovalchuk's contract with LA.  They got him to agree to walk away after he'd received a scheduled bonus in mid-December.  Almost positive he hadn't been suspended prior to being terminated.  He did have to clear waivers, which is what happened in both cases.  (And the 2 cases aren't exactly the same.  Kovi signed a 3 year deal at 35+ yo, so the Kings still take his full cap hit through the original contract term.)

If the Sabres want to be able to use Bogosian's contract going away as cap space, then they'd better get him to agree to forego the money he's owed.  Because if they terminate him for cause (refusing to report), he can have the NHLPA file a grievance up to 60 days after he gets canned.  And an arbitrator would decide if the termination was proper.  If he decides it isn't, the Sabres are back on the hook for that money and that cap.

And it is the wrong time of the year to simply buy him out, so that's not an option.

No, it's not confirmed.  They can talk to other teams if the Sabres allow it.  Which, while not being reported, probably has also happened.  I don't think the Sabres are playing hard ball with Bogosian.  They can't afford that negativity with players in the league.

They likely orchestrated the whole scenario.

"Zach, we can't move you, your salary is too much.  We can waive you, you can choose not to report, and we can suspend you.  We can terminate your contract and you'll lose some money.  But you'll be free to sign with another team.  These teams were interested,  but the money was too much.  You might want to talk to them."

It's a deal or no deal.  Waive, suspend, terminate.. just as GA said above.

So, Bogosian finally gets his release and as soon as he commits to not filing a grievance the Sabres effectively get some extra cap space.

I was reading a Byfuglien story on TSN yesterday.  At the end it mentioned that if his contract is terminated after the deadline he wouldn't be eligible to sign with a playoff rival.  What's the rule there, you're ineligible for the playoffs if your contract is terminated that late in the year?

Too late for a meeting to look it up, and not sure which category of FA Bogosian would fall under, but there are deadlines to be eligible to play RS and deadlines for being on a PO roster.

Pretty sure he doesn't fall under the December 1 deadline, but believe everybody has to be in the fold with the team they will/would be in the playoffs with by 5:00PM on Monday.  (The end of the trade deadline.)

Otherwise, bad teams could trade their players to a team in the playoffs and it would set a very uneven playing field.  Teams CAN make trades post deadline, but there are stipulations on them and 1 is they aren't playoff eligible.  (It's rare, but sometimes eliminated teams make trades for the following season while still in the current league year.)
