Look to the Islanders, Elaine, look to the Islanders

The Sabres are boring too.

Boy, I'll say.

My best understanding with regard to that Tierney fella and his 4-quadrant grid -- Dull/Bad/Good/Lucky: In the above, he updated the grid to show recent performance. The Sabres are firmly in the Dull quadrant and so far to the left that they are almost falling off the grid entirely (meaning that they were creating and surrendering really, really low shot attempt rates). The Sabres are also flirting with just being "bad" (in a dull sort of way).

This graphic squares with my experience of watching the Sabres. Unless Eichel's on the ice, they are dull af.

Now see where the Islanders are, now look where Carolina is. We should be trying to be Carolina not the Islanders.

You know what is fun?  Winning hockey games and being in the playoff race.  The Hasek led teams would have been in the upper left quadrant.  It was fun.  We’ve forgotten how fun just simply winning more games than you lose can be.  NYI is above Deluca .500, or at least was the last time I looked.

Let’s start with winning games first and then go from there.  I’ll take wins any way we get them.

Cheese and rice. After a decade of suckitude we’re going to fussy about how we win?

Don't you understand? Carolina takes roughly FOUR MORE SHOT ATTEMPTS per game than the Islanders! And nearly EIGHT MORE shot attempts allowed per game!! Never mind that hockeyviz tells us the bulk of these shot differences come from meaningless point shots allowed in NYI's case.

We don't want to be the Islanders, because these stats tell us they are identical to carolina save for one fewer back-foot point shot being blocked per period, and two or three more of these shots allowed per period

That's a simplification and you know it.

Carolina as a team and as a style of hockey is more fun to me. Also they have more talent.

Yes, I want fun winning because I want to be entertained.

The charts also say Montreal and LA are among the best teams in the league.

It may be meant as a conversation starter but using that chart to say these are the real good teams, as people do, is a crock and gives analytics a bad name.

The good teams are the teams that win.

You would love if the Sabres played like the Islanders, though. The hockey, and atmosphere it brings, can be utterly electric. Go watch the game that Tavares returned to Long Island last season. It was probably the most entertaining regular season game I watched last year.

I'm not taking shots at the Hurricanes' style, as I am the original guy-who-noticed-the-Canes-before-they-got-good

But that chart doesn't give us any real info about the styles the teams play relative to each other

Also, I just saw that the stats are not only 5v5, but score adjusted. We're probably talking less than one shot attempt per period difference between these two teams on a game-by-game basis, so this chart really is kinda goofy and illustrates why a lot of stats guys don't ever think about or look at corsi anymore
