Sabres have a Bunch of JAGS

I was thinking about this during last nights game.  There's a few players that I thought had a really nice game.  Jack, Frolic and Vesey.  I was thinking, why do we have so many players that I kind of like, they have really nice games, which is normal for middle tier players - yet we still stink?

I believe the reason isn't that we're completely void of good players, it's my opinion that we're missing an entire 2nd line.  I think the above graph illustrates that.

We need Jack, Skinner and Sam on the top line, a real second line of non current Sabres and the rest of the players moved down a line and the bottom moved out.

Since we may not be able to attract top free agents or have enough ammo to trade for these players - I think some have to come from FA and we must have the farm system fill these voids.  Finding and building a 2nd line should be something we can do and I'd spend any resources available to get a goalie too.

Pretty much.  If, before next season, they added two top-6 (2nd line) forwards to play with Eichel, Reinhart, Skinner, and Olofsson then the forwards would be in good shape.  The bottom 6 could be made up of Johansson, Cozens, Larsson, Okposo, then some combination of Sheary, Vesey, Girgensons, Lazar, Asplund, or FA signings.  It would be a very solid group.  And yes, a goalie too.

So what you're saying is we'd be fine if we could just build a solid 2nd line around a top notch 2C, say a Ryan O'Reilly type?

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I know we're supposed to "get over" the O'Reilly trade but I never will. We traded one of the best players in the league for nothing.

One of the best players in the league?  That's a huge stretch.

He's not even the best player on his own team and he wasn't the best player on our team.

We can overcome that trade, though I agree it was awful.

Best 2-way center right now (Bergeron's fading and so is Toews). Playoff mvp. What more would you want ? Point is, we've spent all season lamenting about not having a 2C. We gave him away. Why does JBot get a pass on that?

I don’t think he is getting a pass at all.  Are there people out there defending the move or even people saying that Botterill has done a very good job?

I was being facetious. But I would ask, given the glaring hole and the inability to fix it why hasn't he been fired? GMs have been fired for lesser gaffs than that one. One has to assume the ownership has no problem with waiting for Cozens to fill that void and spending that ROR bonus money they saved and the fans can just go f themselves. That, one would assume, must be ownership's view of it.

Lol, yeah, you could assume that is ownership’s view.  The point is not totally without merit.  I believe that they certainly had a hand in how the O’Reilly trade went down.

I really believe that Botterill sold ownership on a plan for a slow, methodical rebuild.  I think his job is safe until after the 2020-21 season.

Unfortunately, I think you are right.

Except he's not the best 2-way center right now.

The point is, so what, he's gone.  We lost the trade by a country mile but the market set O'Relly's value at the time.   It's about what do we do from here.  Building a second line can/should be done.

I also don't think firing GM's every few years is the way to go.
