Not according to Calgary fans. He's a defensive forward/pk specialist. I've read some and inquired, he's really helped Tkachuk's defensive game from every Calgary fan who responded.

PK is a Sabres weakness, a defensive forward to help it, in exchange for Scandella? Sure, why not...…………….if it does indeed workout that is.

Except Scandella was probably their best D-man on the PK.

Pretty much comes down to, are they better w/ Scandella and Rodrigues on the ice or Pilut/Miller and Frolik?  Hoping it's the latter.

No your just upset. It’s not the sabres fault for being irrelevant in a salary cap era for the last decade.  Eye roll.

And anyone who thinks this is an exaggeration of some of the discourse on this forum merely needs to get angry about roster issues during the summer months when they can be addressed rather than months later when they manifest in the standings

What if it was for 13 goal, 47 point, JT Miller?

Im shocked as heck that he is putting up the season that he is.

Hell yes. People have been warped by this "draft picks are the be all end all" logic after being bad for a decade. It's 47 points, NOW, the goal is to win. hockey. games.

Maybe, maaaaybe, in a few years, Johnson will be an NHL player. Maybe. At D, where we are far more loaded.

You have to be very lucky for your late first to turn into a long term NHLer never mind a 40-50 point player.

We'd assuredly be better off with near point a game, 26 year old 2C JT Miller making 5 mil than we would be with Ryan Johnson, project long term ceiling bottom 4 defender.

Well, I lost my more detailed reply because I went to see all the new replies posted while I was posting.. that'll learn me.

So to sum up:

The pick the Lightning got was in the 2020 or 2021 draft, Ryan Johnson is not part of the conversation. (Vancouver doesn't make the playoffs, the pick slides to 2021).

If I read in another thread, the 2020 draft is pretty deep in talent, so the first round pick has more value.

If the pick was in 2021, the Sabres would be without their 1st round pick. This may impact their ability to control the Seattle expansion draft. For example, a 1st round pick and Okposo allows the Sabres to keep players they could not protect and did not want to lose.

Yes, Miller is a worthwhile acquisition. But, I don't think he comes in the same package Vancouver got to begin with, and the Sabres need that pick more than Vancouver does at the moment.

Miller could have been had, it's as simple as that.

The bolded - the Sabres need the player. Not the pick.

Also, a 2019 first would at face value be worth more than a first from a later year. Perhaps the strength of draft evens it out a bit, but our 2019 late first was worth at least as much as a 2020 non-lottery first, and more than a 2021 1st.

"Couldn't do better" isn't a good argument. Further: it's not relevant.

Fielding a competitive hockey team is his job. It's his job to find a way to do it. That's the job description. If he didn't do it, rationalizing off every single potential move he didn't make with some sort of kind of valid, kind of not defense doesn't get anywhere. He needed to find a way to substantially improve the team, others have done it league wide, and he didn't. Over half the teams in the league make the playoffs. It's not expecting a lot to be a playoff team, much less one that isn't out of the playoff picture by the end of December, which we were.

JT Miller is just one of several players that was reasonably available that was of actual top 6 quality.

Botterill is essentially rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic that has become the 2019-20 Sabres season (and also his GM career).

Nevertheless, I think it's a decent move. The problem is that a lot more of these types of small-time moves need to happen. And they need to happen preferably by last summer. Veterans like Scandella were brought in to improve the locker room culture as much as they were brought in for their on-ice talent. Clearly Scandella hasn't had an effect on the locker room culture, so good riddance.

Here are 6 more players that need to be moved as soon as possible: Bogosian, Miller, Sobotka, Rodrigues, Sheary, and Vesey. None of them will bring more than middle or late round picks or career AHL'ers in return, but my feeling is that their mere presence in the locker room is toxic and cancerous.

I just don't know if the types of big moves that can actually save the season and Botterill's job are out there right now. There are 30 other GM's in the league that likely have zero respect for our GM and so are likely only offering highly unfavorable trades.

Exactly where do you get this information about the players being locker room problems? Yeah Bogo and Rodrigues asked for trades so those are low hanging fruit for your list but where do you come up with the other 4? Picking them oit of a hat?

Opinion vs. fact.... sometimes the lines get blurred with sports fans

Tampa doesn't play Vancouver 4 times a season.

Which goaltender was Buffalo giving up?

I would assume that Buffalo would have to pay more.  Not only that, they are giving Tampa a first round pick.. that doesn't help Buffalo out in the long run either.

Are you kidding me?  They have a 25 year old coming off a vezna winning season.  You think they were looking for a goalie prospect?  That’s the best deal tampa could make and had to move Miller for cap purposes so they did.  I’m pretty sure they weren’t specifically looking for a goaltender.

If there's one lesson NHL GMs should have learned from the Vegas expansion draft, it's that paying the expansion team not to take players isn't a good use of assets. And the last thing in the world the Sabres need is a draft pick in the late teens to 20s. At the rate things are going, Jack will have a broken back by the time that player even sniffs the NHL.

I prefaced with "my feeling is that....", i.e. my suspicion based on incomplete information from sports media due to never having been in the Sabres locker room, i.e. my OPINION.

But we do actually know that Bogosian and Rodrigues want to be traded right now, that Miller was unhappy about being traded here in the first place, that Sobotka was very unhappy being here throughout last year, and that Vesey was never too keen on the Buffalo market either. It was probably a stretch to call Sheary a locker room cancer, but let me put it this way: he's small, weak, bad at scoring goals, and was supposed to be a vet from a successful Pittsburgh program whose impact on-ice and off-ice has been completely inconsequential. The team certainly needs less of guys like him.

Where is the guy who always JBOT should be fired for this move after every move?

This is a reasonable trade and hopefully not the only trade.

I don’t think it’s one poster, I think it’s collectively a bunch of us.

BTW, if Olaf is injured, JBOTT should be fired.

Nah, there's a guy who will come along when news comes out that Conor Sheary missed practice due to the birth of his daughter and leave a "Botterill must be fired immediately for this"

I must be riding the coattails of the unnamed poster, because I occasionally chip in on the gag, but not frequently.
