The tanks that I can recall as actually “working” were by Pittsburgh (twice) and Chicago. In all cases the tanking teams were fortunate enough to draft generational Hall of Fame players in back to back seasons. Thinking Lemiex/Jagr, Crosby/Malkin, Toews/Kane Lets not forget that each team then drafting many other stars players Letang/Fluery, Keith/Crawford/Shaw. Then, once they became contenders they were able to pick up excellent veteran free agents to fill out their rosters for the Stanley Cup run. (Thinking Coffey, Francis, Staahl, Kessel, Hossa). We drafted Reinhart, Eichel, Mitts, Nylander, Dahlin and Olofsson so far in 5 drafts. My memory is not great but I agree that tanking is not fool proof. It was simply putting a bare bones NHL team on the ice so we didn't have to watch another 60 point team for a third season in a row. Without the moves he made, that team had no goalie, and 3 top six forwards, two of which were set to start their rookie seasons, neither of whom were 20.
