I tried searching for an open thread but decided to start a fresh discussion.  Does last night get Binnington the Calder?  I believe it does.  What do you folks think?

Probably not because voting is already done and the best rookie was Elias Petterson or at least should be.

I did not realize voting was already submitted.  Has a rookie goal tender ever won the SC in the past?

While it is possible Binnington won,

Members of the Professional Hockey Writers Association submitted ballots for the Calder Trophy at the conclusion of the regular season, with the top three vote-getters designated as finalists. The winner will be announced Wednesday, June 19, during the 2019 NHL Awards™ presented by Bridgestone at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

I think it's based off of regular season and playoffs aren't included

He definitely deserves to be a finalist and if won, is deserving. The team really turned it around when he came in, and goaltending can carry a team more then one player putting up really good stats.

When a goalie is playing well and putting up good stats, the team is usually doing well. When another player puts up really good stats (example is Jeff Skinner) it may not make a difference to the team overall.

As for a rookie goalie winning a cup in the past, I believe there have been a few. Most recent being Murray in Pittsburgh?

Even without knowing the outcome of the playoffs, I think Binnington wins the Calder hands down.  He single-handedly made the worst team the league a solid playoff team.

Yes. It’s based solely on regular season. Did Binnington do enough in the regular season? Well, since he played only 32 games. I’d say he doesn’t win the Calder.

should he? A case can be made for him. As well as all the finalists.

A certain rookie goalie won the cup back in the 80s and then immediately stuck the ring in his ear so he didn't have to listen to Jeremy Roenick anymore.  And speaking of that team, Ken Dryden won the cup and then won the Calder the following year.  Let's see someone top that.

I guess that puts Mr. Binnington in good company.

I think there are others as well, but that was a very memorable run for Montreal and Roy.  No one expected Montreal to win it, especially against a Calgary team that beat the mighty Oilers to get to the final.

Yup. And because it's not a "value to his team" award like, say, the Hart, Pettersson should win it.

But wouldn’t you say that value to a team is more important than individual contribution when it comes to these awards?  I think Binnington should get the Calder because at his position he was excellent especially when it counted in the playoffs and he was a cornerstone piece of the team that won the cup.  This is not to diminish what Pettersson did during the season.

I struck out that line because it doesn't fit into the criteria under which the award is presented.

As for the bolded, you can certainly make the argument that that should be weighted highly, but it's not in the description of the award so everyone's mileage will vary regarding that.

It’s a purely regular season award just like the Hart. So with that and him only playing half the season he’s 3rd on my list and Peterson wins it he was the best rookie this year and it really wasn’t even that close.

And he beat Rick Martin, who had just set a rookie record of 44 goals.  I'm still upset over that.

Roy in 1986.

Sure did. Won 15 games too! Beat that Binnington! (Only added this because they made a big deal about him being the first rookie goalie to win 16 games in the playoffs).
