Paul Hamilton is reported that Brandon Montour did not play in the last 12 minutes of the game.

It will be interesting to see if he is at practice tomorrow

Montour was awful yesterday, IMO.

In general he has so much skill, but is hampered by a lack of chemistry with his teammates. I’ve played with guys like that who are painting their own picture out there all the time so they’re difficult to read off.

Hopefully, he can find a niche because there is a lot to like about his game.

My ranking would be as follows
Eichel
Skinner
Reinhart/Dahlin
Johansson (speculation)/Montour
Risto
Rodrigues (Wouldn't be surprised if others had him lower)
McCabe
Vesey
Larsson
The rest

A long time ago, I came up with a player ranking system that went like this:

Gold star: a game-breaking, multi-tool, elite player that your team builds around and other teams gameplan around.

Blue chip: a first-line guy who can’t win games on his own, but elevates the play of his teammates when he’s on the ice and is either elite in a particular area and decent in others, or very good in most facets. Among the top 20 per cent of players at his position

Red chip: the rank-and-file good NHL regular who won’t lead your team but will help and be a positive in most situations. About half the players in the league qualify.

White chip: the role players, who can hold their own in support roles in the proper situations, or might thrive as specialists at the bottom of the roster.

Black aces: the replacement-level guys you use as filler and injury replacements and coaches try to hide.

A good team would have something like one or two golds, three or four blues, 10-12 reds and 6-8 whites on their 23-man roster.

Based on their play up to last year (and I’m sure all of you will quibble with some of these rankings), we have two blue chips (Jeff and Sam) and one gold star (Jack).

Our red chips are Mojo, Rasmus, Risto, Bogo, Montour, McCabe and Miller

The whites are Scandella, Hutton, Ullmark, Sheary, Vesey, Mittelstadt, Rodrigues, Larsson, Girgensons, Okposo

Blacks: Nelson, Thompson, Elie, Lazar, Smith, Sobotka, Wilson

Unranked: Cozens, Jokiharju, Olofsson, Asplund, Ruotsalainen.

We’ve added some reds and whites and pushed the blacks out of the roster.

But to make a real improvement, we need Dahlin to step up into blue and two or three others to establish themselves as red.

Skinner--Jack--does it matter who wins this spot besides likes/dislikes right this minute, who wins today may lose tomorrow

Does a VO--MJohansson--Samson 2nd line sound better than anything else we could put together??

Vesey--Mitts--Tage/Sheary/ERod/Okposo

I don't dislike the Girgs--Larry 4th line but are they and Okposo in real trouble of making the team??

I've seen enough, barring further trades/injuries:

Skinner-Eichel-Olofsson

Rodrigues-Johansson-Reinhart

Vesey-Cozens-Sheary/Thompson

Skinner with Olofsson? Skinner doesn’t pass.

Agreed, Johansson and Samson needs a finisher, Olofsson goes there. Rodrigues may be fighting for a spot somewhere and Cozens isn't beating out Mitts this year (keyword this).

Dishbag - Eichel - Skinner

Olofsson - Johansson - Reinhart

I do like GOloffson and Reino together. And Skinner seems to need Eichel more than being able to drive his own line (thus not Olofsson-Eichel-Reinhart / Skinner-Johansson-Vesey).

to append to that:

Girgensons - Larsson - Lazar as the 4th?

But we currently skating the Olofsson-Asplund-Johansson line in the pre-season games.

Has anyone ever seen a little known Star Wars Danny Kaye film...  "Wonderful! Wondeful! Spec-u-lation!"

Skinner Jack ?

Olofsson ? Reinhart

Seems like the best foundation for two legitimate scoring lines.

Johansson would be a good fit for either “?”

One more top six forward and we are golden.

The Reinhart duo is Vesey.  Eichel can pass to two finishers.

Skinner Jack Oloffson

Vesey Johansson Reinhart

Mittelstadt-Cozens-Rodrigues

The other we’ve seen there is Casey. Do you see another player in that bumper spot? Okposo has traditionally been a better PP performer, but...?

It's less that I think someone else is better there and more that I view Skinner's passing (execution and decision-making) as a hindrance, while Eichel and Olofsson have the "finishing" for each side covered. I've seen our players do excellent things on the PP over the last few years, and none of them involve Skinner. (I'd still put him out there with Jack for OT PPs.)

Not sure who I'd like in place of him, and I won't stamp my feet if they choose to keep Skinner there. I just don't think he meshes well with them

I agree, I don't like Skinner on the 1st PP either.  Olofsson actually is a good passer.

What I think I would like the opening night lineup to look like:

Skinner-Ike-Vesey - Slightly offensively tilted usage

Olofsson-Johansson-Reinhart - Slightly defensively tilted usage

Sheary-Mittelstadt-ERod - Heavily offensively tilted usage

Girgensons-Larsson-Lazar -Heavily defensively tilted usage

Okposo,Sobotka

Dahlin-Miller

McCabe-Jokiharju

Scandella-Ristolainen

(Pilut)-(Montour)-(Bogo)

Nelson/Gilmore

-As soon as one of Pilut/Montour/Bogo is healthy, Scandella goes to the press box

PP1

Reino

Ike-Johansson-Olofsson

Dahlin

PP2

Vesey

ERod-Mitts-Skinner

Risto/Miller

PK1

Larsson-Girgs

McCabe-Risto

PK2

ERod-Lazar

Dahlin-Miller

PK you put out with 30 secs left

Ike-Reino

Dahlin-Miller

What I want to see to start the season:

Oloffson-Eichel-Thompson

Skinner-Johansson-Reinhart

Vesey-Mittelstadt/Cozens-Sheary

Girgensons-Larsson-Rodrigues

Dahlin-Ristolainen

McCabe-Miller

Gilmour-Jokiharju

Scandella

Hutton/Ullmark

Montour to push down Ristolainen when he comes.  Ristolainen trade bringing back Jokiharkju/Borgen if it happens.  Pilut pushing down Gilmour, if not McCabe.  Waiving Scandella if necessary.  Bogosian changes nothing.

Sobotka waived/extra at best, but never played above 4th line.  Wilson expendable.  Lazar only if Girgensons injured.  Sheary expendable if Ristolainen brings in a forward.  Thompson gets a shot, but goes to the AHL if he can't keep up against NHLers (but let's have hope).  Cozens gets a few games as a 3rd liner for the taste, then back to Junior.

Only part of the line-up I worry about is the goalies.  I don't trust either of them right now and I doubt the team does either.  This team will be greatly improved largely with the influx of talent on defense, but the coaching change is night and day.  Team will take some time to develop chemistry though, so I expect a little roughness to start the season to gel over time.  Line-up decision that will annoy me most is if Eichel and Reinhart remain paired.  I think Reinhart provides so much more when he isn't taking backseat to Eichel (and that's a mental thing).  This roster has the talent, the size, the grit, the speed, and the finishers all throughout it.  If Johansson can lock down that 2C role, which in pre-season seems to have been the case, then the only 'problem' with the forwards is finding the chemistry.  Krueger is very patient, so whatever we get Saturday/next Thursday is likely going to be what we see for a while.

And yes, I forgot Okposo.  He should be sent to the minors in some other program.  Concussions suck and just changed him too much.  I wish he would take LTIR and still collect his paycheck.
