Friedman Says Ralph Kruger has a Legit Shot at Sabres HC Position

That’s fair. I think it’s a case where the Sabres had real interest, and Todd graciously declined. He may not have been their choice in the end, anyways, but I don’t think that option could be fully explored. I’ll see if I can dig up the person saying it was a decline from Todd.

With Tippett it seems quite likely given the apparently validity of White’s source that it was his job to turn down.

Krueger doesn’t have a resume, that’s the point

Krueger has a far more impressive resume than Chris Taylor does, or Phil Housley did, or Dan  Bylsma Did when Pittsburgh hired him.

I do buy into what someone @matter2003 ? was saying upthread about highly qualified people being able to leap jurisdictions and succeed because their gift is motivating and focusing organizations and plugging the specialists into roles where they can shine.

There’s the bit on McLellan, comes from Scott Burnside of the Athletic via Vogl.

Granted, the quote includes Grongorg’s name being “thrown into the mix” and we know he didn’t get an interview. Whether or not he was ever discussed, hard to say. Weirdly, the Sabres official Twitter was all over Gronborg for a time around when this came out.

So maybe they reached out to Grönborg but never followed through because of something that happened elsewhere, like a great interview with Tippett.

I believe he was quoted as saying something to that effect when he signed in Zurich.

It's coming from this:

...which I really, really don't buy as a legit source.  Not saying it's not true, but, not enough for me to say Gorbnorg was never interviewed.

Botterill hiring his future boss makes no sense to me.

Is he a coach in terms of getting wins? Cause that’s what we need next year. Not all of the other noise.

Not a tonal and culture shift for two years, wins.

Who said he was his future boss? Ted Black was never Murray’s boss. Brandon wasn’t Botterill’s boss.

Sorry, my fault for using Kim, who is obviously the boss.

I get what you are saying @dudacek about Krueger being a strong individual that can find success most places he goes, but what’s his track record like for winning? Have any of his teams won? His soccer teams haven’t been.

Reiterating, this franchise needs one thing next season and it’s wins. If he’s a great front office guy, hire him for that role NOW!

It sounds like it may be the same source as the first Vogl Tweet.

This is how all breaking sports news operates now.  Leaks from front offices, agents, and players acting as sources to the twatter feeds of sports columnists.  Yeah, a lot of it's horseshit, but you as you weed out twatters that ***** bogus information, it starts to settle down a bit.

He turned a ***** Swiss program into a consistent thorn in the side of the big five, had a terrible Edmonton team at nearly .500 during the lockout season and took the throw away team in the World Cup to the finals. He got a ton of credit for his assistant coaching for Team Canada in the Olympics.

Has he won as a head coach? No, but his talent-poor teams have consistently overachieved. Hell, he got results out of Nail Yakupov. He will recognize his own flaws and hire staff to compensate.

In soccer, he brought a perennial second division loser -a Coyotes type franchise - into the premier league - with I think three top six or eight finishes.

He lifts black clouds, defies the odds, and brings hope. His organizations get better.

I love how much debate there is over a guy who might not even be interviewed or offered a spot as a coach.

People on here almost ready to drop the gloves.

Y'all are nuts.

His only NHL experience he coached the Oilers to a 77 point pace (they had 74 the year before). The Sabres finished ahead of the Oilers that season, in 12-13. Then they decided they were so bad they had to tank.

Or we are just enjoying the debate. High horse.

Do you think it is likely an offer has been made to Tippett, and Tippett has either turned out down or is still weighing his options (read Edmonton or his current gig)?

i wouldn’t be surprised if they made Tippett an offer. He seems to strike all the known boxes.

And I wouldn’t blame Tippett for exploring or even taking the Edmonton offer, Connor McDavid is pretty attractive and he apparently has a relationship with Ken Holland, whose GM resume is pretty damn good, despite the past few years.

I do think for several reasons Tippett is a better fit in Edmonton and nothing to do with anything negative about Buffalo.

With Tippett the story is not complete.  I don’t think there is any evidence that he has turned down Buffalo.  It’s been reliably reported that he interviewed and speculated that he may very well be the top candidate.  Just because Buffalo has interviewed other people, that doesn’t mean that Tippett is out.  No one has reported that.

For all we really know, Botterill could have offered Tippett a contract today, Tippett accepted, and they will wait until after the World Championships to announce, or it could be announced tomorrow.

If you keep doing that, I'm going to get to the point where I want to call the guy Nordberg.

Krueger has never won.  Anything.  Anywhere.

Neither has Dave Tippett. Chris Taylor has never won a playoff game.

Mike Sullivan? Thoroughly mediocre record when the Pens hired him. Same for Dan Bylsma.

What’s Bruce Cassidy ever won prior to the Bruins gig? Craig Berube?

Thank you. Funny what perception vs fact can do to enlighten the mind.

I think we want a cutting edge visionary leader of men with NHL experience, personality, tactical savvy, no closet skeletons and a tough but nurturing demeanour who has won everywhere he’s coached.

Why hasn’t Botterill hired that guy yet? ?

Semi-related, I just listened to Friedman’s bit from WGR yesterday. Sure sounds like if it’s not Krueger, Botterill has done a masterful job of hiding his intentions. Keefe likely staying in Toronto, Tippett a good bet to be going to Edmonton, Richards and Martin out, Boughner not seemingly in the picture...and people telling Elliotte after his 31 thoughts piece that talks with Krueger are a lot further along than he imagines.

Tippett put together winning NHL seasons. Kreuger hasn't even done that.
