So if Dal beats STL, we're guaranteed at least pick #19 with our 2nd first round pick. Could be better if COL or LV come out of the other west bracket and/or Columbus/Carolina get to the east finals. If STL beats DAL, we get pick #28 at best. Pretty big difference.

Stinks not wanting Dallas to lose, but for once when they win so do the Sabres.

Yep, we should all be pretty big stars fans next round.

The current team USA hype shouldn’t make you forget Cozens, Dach or Krebs.

They’re all right there.

I think 1 of Cozens or Dach is gone before we pick for sure. Krebs I might take over Zegras. Those 2 are interesting.

  1. Hughes (Devils)
  2. Kakko (Rangers)
  3. Cozens (Hawks, they have taken defense a lot the last 2 years, they need a big center)
  4. Dach/Turcotte (The avs are interesting. They could potentially take Byram but I think they go forward. Turcotte makes a lot of sense for them.)
  5. Byram (LA, they need him, he should be ranked right around here anyways, fit and need.)
  6. Detroit. This one is the issue. The others make sense to me but Detroit with Yzerman could do almost anything. They could take a defender here but I can't talk myself into it. I think they take forward, but they could take any one of Pod, Boldy, Turcotte, Dach I think.
  7. Boldy or Turcotte

Alternatively:

  1. Hughes
  2. Kakko
  3. Turcotte
  4. Cozens
  5. Byram
  6. Pod
  7. Boldy

Unless someone pics him before 7

Here is the thing about Caufield and the Sabres.  If he is lined up with Jack, no doubt he will do great. 40 goal scorer BUT how will he score on another line? He doesn't drive play, he needs a guy like Jack (Hughes or Eichel) to set him up.

Sabres need players who can drive a line. They had basically no secondary scoring  You can't assume they will be able to acquire a quality one via trade of Free Agency.

Guys who Drive play  Dach, Boldy, Turcotte, Cozens and  Krebs. All should be higher on the Sabres draft board than Caufield IMO

Pure speculation, I think Turcotte definitely would be. Boldy or Caufield next hard to say, but I bet you Caufield (and Boldy) is ahead of Dach, Cozens, and Krebs on their board.

Why is this?

He’s a winger and he doesn’t fit my image of a JBot winger (speedy, force-the-play)

Kid is a specialist and their will be better play-drivers, skaters and all-arounders available at 7.

Well, neither does Reinhart then technically. Granted he didn't draft Sam.

I think he probably has Zegras ahead of Caufield for the reason you stated. Maybe Boldy too, due to position.

Turcotte/Zegras/Boldy/Caulfield is my guess in that order. I don't think he'd entertain the idea of picking Podkolzin either.

Yes, especially if the STL/SJS is traded to Winnipeg as part of the Trouba Trade

this is around where i'm at on it. i have no interest in trading risto for pure futures unless, in a corresponding move, we're trading some futures for a right now piece or two. ideally, i'd like to see risto moved in exchange for a top-six forward but nothing is perfect.

Is the CHL tag so bad that JBot would have drafted Jack ahead of McDavid?

absolute zero chance. but that may also be because it was clear both would play immediately so they wouldn’t need to worry about the chl development path.

I know he likes the fact of team control and longer development of NCAA players but he hopefully values talent above all.

This should really only come into play for guys who could take more than 2 years before they are ready for pro hockey.  Anyone drafted at #7 will be expected to be NHL ready within 2 years, and if not, then AHL ready at least.

It’s the 3rd round and later picks that the CHL becomes a bit of a disadvantage, because a large percentage of those players could take 4 years (age 21/22) before they are ready for the AHL/NHL.  The CHL players need to be signed, or not, after 2 years, while college or Euro players have 4 years before they need to be signed.

At least this is my understanding of things.

I'd guess there's no way when there is clear, significant separation, as in the example you posted, that Botterill wouldn't take the CHL guy.

However, he's gone two full drafts without 1 CHL player. He's the only GM that has done that. Pittsburgh followed the exact same pattern while he was there. It's definitely a factor for him such that in the great majority of cases, it appears there won't be enough clear separation between players to offset it being a key difference maker in how he picks.

---

I'm not as well-read on this upcoming draft class as many, but from all I've gathered, there doesn't appear to be anything close to a consensus regarding the players that should be available around 7, so I'm pretty confident we're getting one of the Americans. Of course there's the chance he has Cozens for a random example significantly above everyone else (and he falls to us), but, that seems unlikely given the multitude of rankings available.

I don’t believe Botterill cares one iota about the league or nationality of his top 10 pick with the possible exception of the KHL.

He moved his 3rd picks in each of the past two years out of Europe and out of college and into the CHL. Had he not won the lottery last year, I’m confident he would have picked Svechnikov. Has Casey been gone two years ago, he would have happily nabbed Cody Glass.

The Europe/college bias is a thing for later picks.
