Clearly he and the Bruins are pusses because they didn't immediately decapitate Kadri. Casey Nelsen didn't see the hit so the Bruins didn't know how to react. ?

And Chara's presence did nothing to deter the hit. Chara didn't deter. It's almost like deterrence in the NHL is a myth.

Nah man, we should trade our skill guys for Milan Lucic. Reinhart and Erod for Lucic, that way physical play and winning.  We should get Tom Wilson too, let's trade Olofsson and Mitts for him. All the toughness! Woooooooo

Tom Wilson can play hockey when he's not being a dick. I'd trade the right piece for him.  Not sure if the Sabres have that piece.

He's telling you it's a lock. Pretty common saying

Maybe in 1985. It's not something used by everyone today.

The Islanders 4th line has been incredibly effective against the Penguins because of how physical they are

You don't have to build a team around those guys, but it's good to have a few around, especially for the playoffs

Which is a completely different argument than having tough guys protects your players.

So you take the check book to the bank and put in the lock box?

Just like putting the lime in the coconut and then you shake it all up?

Lime in the Coconut ...  is classic!  “Now lemme get this straight ...”

But Kadri's hit probably did.

We get it. The era of having fighters just to fight is over. And we get it. But having tough guys who push back when the other team is taking liberties is a real thing.

I don't think Kadri was trying to engage Debrusk whom he just injured. If so, throw him outta the league.

Watch it again.  Kadri crosschecks Debrusk deliberately to the head, Chara comes in, Kadri avoids him and goes back to DeBrusk who is down.  Chara tries again to pull Kadri away and engage, Kadri gets away from Chara and falls on top of Debrusk who is still down.

Kadri is slime.  Chara did what he could and was smart to avoid a penalty.

While Chara did not “deter” Kadri from making a bad hit, the Bruins always answer.

Playoffs are a lot more intense and physical than the regular season. I wonder how the Sabres would’ve done if they made it in.

Depends on who they play.  They would battle Toronto and Tampa ok but they might be manhandled by Boston or Columbus.

Look at Columbus and Tampa.  Kucherov suspended, his bad hit got an immediate response from Foligno and Anderson was more than willing to go with Hedman.  Columbus sent a big message after 2 games on the road

Fighters may may be gone but physical hockey lives on in the playoffs.

Anytime you have a line that takes away time and space they're going to effective. Best way to do that is be on someone. That's what we need, that tenacity.

If the Sabres "answered" like that, we'd all skewer them indefinitely. See this thread.

Even if the Sabres by some miracle made the playoffs, we would lose 4 straight. We play a wimpy non physical game that is ill suited to playoff hockey. We don’t have players who finish checks. We would be manhandled by any team. The scary thing is I think we’re going to trade away Risto, our most physical player.

You think Kadri’s hit is going to deter the Bruins from running Toronto players?

BTW, I don't deny that teams still like to have guys who push back when liberties are taken. I just don't think there's any evidence that having those players actually prevents liberties from being taken.

Of course there isn't. All those bad old days you don't probably remember where fighting was rampant — so was the vicious stickwork and other thuggery. It was never about deterrence.

A decent argument for a Response is that it's a proxy for how much your players care, about the team and each other. Team-building, to use a cliche.

It's always been about esprit de corps.

So, a sober Lehner looks pretty good.  But the entire Islanders team is good.  Look for Penguins thuggery in the third.

And to think we were laughing about where they were compared to where we were a couple seasons ago.
