Lazy journalism first piece in Atheletic imo truly bad and useless.

Nine journalists reviewing 150 categories is lazy because you disagree with one category?

It's not journalism. I think that's too high a standard to apply to this.

Did you read it?

My sense is that the comment in the Athletic related to the perception of Buffalo around the league -- it wasn't that long ago (2015) that Buffalo was ranked 3rd-worst in a players' poll in terms of market desirability.  (It was an ESPN poll, and a number of the ESPN hockey writers are now at the Athletic.)

Have things improved since then?  Yes, but as of 2 months ago the Sabres were still the team that finished DFL 3 times in 5 years, and the city hasn't gotten any bigger, nor has its weather improved (and state and local taxes have effectively increased since they are no longer fully deductible).

The best thing the Sabres can do to improve this factor is keep winning.

Yeh and the analysis was meh and dumbed down... they usually have a higher standard and more indepth.  This was bullet point journalism good for a press conference and group think repeating.  Yeh, I disagreed with that one point, but the rest was worthy of Rob Ray keys to the game and thats about it.

The criteria they gave is owners who give their franchise freedom to spend do better than those who don’t or those franchises in questionable markets. The Pegulas have demonstrated a willingness to spend, although sometimes foolishly and Buffalo has consistently ranked at the Top of the US Markets.

Now the Pegulas have made mistakes which could factor their low ranking, however that was not listed in the criteria at the beginning the article.

Exactly.... what's made them somewhat problematic owners has been their inexperience and mistakes in hiring and trusting front office talent (both w/ Sabres and Bills).  Are we hanging the season of "tanking" for Eichel around their necks as a permanent stain?

If you like Botterill and the moves he's making then the problem is essentially solved.  They generally don't meddle in personnel decisions.  They have fired coaches, but its not without cause.  Their GMs are able to spend as needed.  Facilities are first class.  And there's stability in the teams not relocating anywhere.  Plus they also own the Amerks just down the road, so there's long-term stability there.

So what ranks them 26th?

That's the real question.

The Pegulas have also built Harbor Center.  They have built the facility where the scouting combine happens. They've been hosting international level hockey events.

But yeah... 26th.

And it's more of a question for the reporters who were polled as opposed to the Athletic.  There's not going to be anything super scientific to the way they scored the results.  They can only report on what they're given.

So, The Athletic publishes this. They are responsible for what goes into their production.

Just saying it's a very disappointing type of reporting to come from a place that is supposedly better than others.  Hopefully it doesn't become the norm.

I haven't read it, but it looks like filler to me.  These types of things usually are.  There's a place for that, but like you said, not if there is too much of it.

Today The Athletic looks at how Television Broadcasts might change.

From multiple camera angles including overhead views during live game action, less commercials to and a feed that has players and coaches mic’d up with unedited real time audio available on a separate channel are being considered.

Katie Strang wrote about who Bettman’s Potential Replacements could be. Bill Daly, Tim Lieuwke, and Brendan Shahanan were on the list.

Also this candidate

Kim Pegula, co-owner, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres

Regarded as one of the most powerful women in sports, Pegula is integrally involved in two major professional franchises, as well as a handful of other properties that fall under the Pegula Sports and Entertainment business, operated by her and her husband, Terry. In May, Pegula became the first team president in both the NFL and NHL, so she has experience not only in running a team but in the many business offshoots that come with that. Seen as a sharp, forward-thinking businesswoman with ample experience, she recently represented the Sabres at the NHL Board of Governors meeting.

Said one person who has dealt with her professionally: “She’s a logical thinker. Progressive. Works hard. Not in it for any glory. Just wants the best for their enterprise and the city of Buffalo.”
