Best Off-season moves around the NHL (Trades and UFA signings)

So far the best moves that I can see were made by the Canadians and Sabres.

Domi has been great for the Habs with 22 pts (10g) in 18 games and is under contract for this season and next at a paltry $3.15.  The downside to this deal was the cost.  Alex Galchenyuk, like Domi in AZ, had some great moments and was a top 5 pick.  He also has been solid for the Yotes with 8 pts in 10 games.

The Habs also got prospect Suzuki and Tatar from LV for Max Pacioretty.  This deal has been great for the Habs despite giving up an excellent player.  Tatar has 15 points in 18 games (a 68 pt pace).  He has this season and two more left at 4.8 per season. Patches has only 2 goals in 14 games so far.

While these moves are pretty good Jbot's deals and moves have been much more bang of the buck

We gave up a 3rd rd pick (Cliff Pu) and 3 other picks for Jeff SKinner.  All Skinner has done is become a center piece of the Sabres with 13 goals, 20 pts and a +12 in 18 games.  He is on the last year of his deal $5.725.

Jbot also signed Carter Hutton who has given the Sabres excellent goaltending game in and out since he arrived.  3 years at 2.75 per season is a steal so far.  14 games 7-6-1 with a 2.65 and a .916.

An Honorable mention goes to Jbot's trade (read cap  dump by the Pens) of a 4th rd pick for Conner Sheary and Matt Hunwick.  Sheary has given us decent secondary scoring (6g, 10pts in 18 games = a 27g, 46 pt pace).  Sheary has this season and next at 3.0 and injured Hunwick has two year (this one and next) at 2.25.

Can you think of other deals that are working out as well or better?

PS I know some of you think the ROR deal is the worst of the off-season (from a Buffalo perspective).  Considering the limited production of the 3 former Blues we acquired and ROR's great start with the Blues.  However the Blues continue to regress despite ROR's great start, Buffalo is in a playoff spot without him, also have a 1st rd pick from the deal and it freed up cap space to acquire Skinner. Right now the Blues are winning this deal on paper, but given the cap savings to acquire Skinner and the improved locker room I'm reserving judgement on the deal.

I'm also going to mention that Tor is getting their money's worth out of Tavares.  He has been excellent and with Matthews hurt, he is the go to guy.  The bad news of this deal (7 years at 11 mill per season for someone already 28) is that it cost them Nylander who they can no longer afford to re-sign with Marner and Matthews expected to ink new deals by next summer.  It also kept them from improving their defense.

Well the only other notable trade and effect I'm aware of was the Erik Karlsson to SJS  for Chris Tierney, Rudolf Balcers and dman Dylan Demelo back to OTT

So far OTT looks to be on top with that one.

Erik 0G 8A for 8 pts and a -9

Dylan is 2g 5A for 7pts +6 / Tierney is 2g 14A for 16pts and a -1

Watched a little bit of SJS nd Karlsson has not had the impact in SJS yet that many expected and OTT is playing better than many expected.

So with the cap savings they got, looks like OTT did good.

I think Sheary was a great pick up.

The Sabres got him before Skinner and at the time he was viewed as Jack's trigger man to be.  With the acquisition of Skinner he's kind of slipped into the shadows.  In watching him, he's a flawed player:  His stick handling in traffic is poor and he gets pushed around a little, but he's fast, finds the soft areas and plays hard shift in, shift out, which makes him good at forechecking and backchecking.  Good hockey IQ (as one would expect for someone coming out of the Penguins org).  Oh, and secondary scoring!  He's been a good acquisition.

Apparently, it wasn't STL.

Sheesh. O'Reilly just cannot win. He leads STL in scoring, he's a positive +/- on another junk team, he probably is still dynamite in the faceoff dot, and logs 20 min/game. With us he put up 60 pts/season. With COL, he was solid, too. But his team is always a bottom-dweller (except one season with COL).

The guy apparently has a dark cloud following him around. I wonder if he ever ponders if it’s just him.

Its like Kevin Love. Good player (stats-wise) on crappy teams.... but missing the ingredient to raise the team performance. It took Lebron James to overcome his misfortune, and he was still widely criticized for being an anchor for those Cavs teams.

If his post-game comments here were any indication, he probably thinks it's all his fault, making the cloud ever darker. ?

It is amazing that with all the talent on that team that they stink.  There is about 5-6 guys there I’d love to have on the Sabres.  I think Stl is just an example of bad coaching.

I also think they might suffer from the same malaise that GMTM brought to the Sabres:  A bunch of great players, but not a team....?
