Dahlin's first partner is...

...Jake McCabe?

First surprise of training camp for me.

Housley, as quoted in the Buffalo News:

"He's going to see different partners. We've looked at that very hard already. Right now in the first couple days, we'll put Jake McCabe on the right side with Rasmus. It's a good fit for him to start with and for both of them really. It will allow Rasmus the freedom. Jake is a stable defensive player but he'll jump in the play as well and remember he was the first defenseman to score for us last year. We're just trying to give a little bit more of a veteran look for Rasmus and they'll get the chance to create chemistry right away."

I remember hype over Bogosian/Beaulieu last September. Hope Housley ain’t primed to repeat the Beaulieu mistake, but there is evidence to suggest the team might consider Beaulieu their number six D.

Guhle/Bogosian Dahlin/McCabe does make some sense if they really want to give Guhle a shot though.

Two LHDs, the one who prefers thin right on the left, the one who plays on the left going to the right. Weird.

Bogosian gets one of Hunwick/Beaulieu/Guhle/Nelson then?

McCabe - Dahlin is probably a sheltered pair though, and y'all know I'm all in on that

Makes sense that they'll have him on what likelyis the 3rd pairinginitially.

Does Hunwick get the veteran benefit of the doubt at 2nd pairing?  That seems 1 pairing higher than I'd've expected him to top out at.

PLEASE do not pair Beaulieu & Bogosian.  That pairing has odd man rush written all over it.

Very interesting.

So:

Risto-Scandy

McCabe-Dahlin

Bogo-Hunwick

Holy mackerel I would like to see McCabe emerge as Dahlin's steady, tough, hard-hitting, stay-at-home partner.  And Dahlin might be the kind of guy who can elevate a guy like McCabe into that role.

Absolutely. If both of those guys play to the ceiling of what they are, nobody will want to play against them. you'll either end up with a minus one or a broken orbital bone.

Just ask Laine

That's kinda why I was cranky about how the defense looks this summer though. Because if you want to try something like Dahlin - McCabe, all of a sudden your healthy D-lineup probably puts Beaulieu on your second pair again.

I don't want to see Booyou in a Sabres Uniform... hoping he gets put on waivers and someone claims him...

Dahlin-McCabe makes 100% sense.  Reference my analysis here.

Housley loves Scandella-Ristolainen.  And McCabe's relevant 5v5 CF% was highest with LH defensemen (Beaulieu, Scandella) and lowest with RH defensemen (Bogosian, Ristolainen, Fedun, Tennyson).  Scandella-Risto was stronger than both McCabe-Risto and Scandella-McCabe.

Dahlin could have started with Bogosian, but I think they need Bogosian to mentor D #6.  I believe that will be Nathan Beaulieu based on a) contracts, b) experience, and c) the CF% of Beaulieu-Bogosian was the team high at an excellent 58.06.  So that makes:

Scandella-Ristolainen

Dahlin-McCabe

Beaulieu-Bogosian

Not saying you are wrong but hate Booloo there.

I assume you're asking about the CF% for Beaulieu-Bogosian, which was 58.06 over 69:25 of 5v5, so probably ~5 games.

Go calculate the GF% 5v5 for that pairing and let us know.

Too slow, I went and looked it up.  They saw 1 GF and 5 GA and the ice time was over a period of 16 GP (but some games could have literally been mere seconds together).  However, the High Danger Goals For was 1 and the High Danger Goals Against was 2.  Small samples, etc.  Also notable: the on-ice SV% was 83.87, so take that how you will.

McCabe, a more stay at home guy but not a slug who take take some of the physical load and let Dahlin be more free to freelance and do his thing.  Given the options on the roster, I like it.

I just hate Beaulieu. I refuse to give him a cute nickname.  He is hot garbage and I want him nowhere near this lineup, ever.

How about blow-u. My personal fav.

How things are set for the first day of practice that's more of a drill practice *than*  anything else, means nothing on who'll be matched up for the 1st game of the regular season. Be patient grasshoppers, we'll see in due time.

I hear what you're saying, but then again even if these are only drills, if PHous is thinking of pairing them, might as well let them get a feel for each other right off the bat.

I'm having a little trouble understanding the importance in Phil's mind of McCabe being the first defenseman to score a goal last season. So what? Until I see otherwise, in my mind, Phil's a turd.

Right? Also the defense didn't score a flurping goal until december, like 25 games into the season! I remember the hype of Phil being the "D" whisperer and wincing every game that piled on without any sort of offensive input from the D. By the time they finally netted one I'd stopped giving a damn on the season.

I think Phil quickly realized that we do not have someone in net to compensate for an offensively aggressive D (and quite frankly, no D-men capable of safely executing his ideas after one training camp/preseason of trying to teach it), and he just decided to change plans and focus on supporting Lehner
