GASabresIUFAN
We have discussed this somewhat in the lineup thread, but I thought it deserved it's own thread as we push through the Dog Days of Summer. My premise is whether or not you feel that an area of this team is so deficient that Jbot must get reinforcements from another organization before the season starts. The next obvious question is whether or not such a move is likely and what would it cost. According to capfriendly we are at 47 of our 50 contract. Personally, I think we are about done. However with 3 1st in 2019, I'm not ruling out anything. I'm also including camp failures in this discussion. For example injuries and poor prospect play in camp might force Jbot to go get a RHD or LW during camp. Thoughts?

That said, would absolutely love to stumble into a Leddy & Boychuk for 2nd rounders sort of late off-season. THAT sort of an early October day would put the Sabres firmly onto the bubble & maybe even into the Swamp Cats playoff spot.
Weave
No doubt in my mind we are done. However, there is no area of this team that does not need improvement. Center, wing, defense, goal. It all still needs upgrade.
erickompositör72
I'm guessing he's "trying" every day. Probably more than most realize. The issue is whether or not there is an available move that is actually worthwhile. Here's another question: should he make a move that may not benefit us, just to appear like he's trying to do something? Scottysabres
I agree the team needs improvement all over the roster. But I also agree an overwhelming majority of that improvement will come from within. I wouldn't count on the cavalry coming in the form of UFA's or trades. Might have to invest some time in a deck of cards while we wait for much of this youth to hammer out their transition to the pro game, see where it all shakes out.

North Buffalo
The WZKBW is suggesting Orpik, but I am not sure we want another Josh Gorges type... to slow. Orpik has a mean streak and plays positionally well... but I think the game has passed him by unless he wants to coach. I agree with Scotty, it needs to come from within. This is pretty much how JBot said he would improve the team: Improve Rochester, and they will push their way into NHL roster spots through competition.

I think that is correct. You look at the roster and all you see is competition not only for roster spots but where people sit in the rotation. Other the Eichel, Hutton and Ullmark, everyone has something to prove at camp. Is Risto still the top guy on D and who is his partner? Can Bogo comeback healthy and contribute? In what order and who are the LWs? Which prospects make the team? Can someone like Olofsson or Pilut surprise at camp and win an NHL job? Etc.... Doohickie
I bet there will be at least one surprise roster player on offense and one on defense (surprise = someone who was expected to play in Rochester, at least to start). The Sabres roster is kind of like the Bills quarterback situation.

BuaeLeeu doesn't possess the mental makeup for the type of defender I want. No, I am not learning how to spell his name.

Beaulieu played 17 or more minutes in 15 of his first 17 games, then only 7 times the rest of the year.
jsb
I don't think there's going to be a major move but I do think JBotts makes something happen with the log jam of LHDs as an example. I'm getting to old to wait on a 5 year reconstruction plan with this team but I am ok and patient enough to get building from the bottom up as opposed to making some grand play now that just doesn't pan out later. If he doesn't do something prior to the season, I see a major redo again at the trade deadline around mid-season.

Hawerchuk
Beaulieu and Tennyson were absolutely horrendous. Wish they could just cut them both. LOL!! I really hope one of the prospects surprise during camp and makes "The Show".

In The Buff
I know someone mentioned how the News mentioned that we should go after Orpik. While I wouldn't be against it, i think its kinda funny that every few years he's a name that's mentioned around here. Stempniak is another name ive seen over & over the past decade, Ian Cole as well. It just wouldnt be a typical offseason without bringing those names up. At least we've gotten off the Matt Duchene train. As much as i know we have a need to improve, I just don't see JBots doing anything drastic at this point. Maybe, just maybe we'll package a draft pick & a player out for someone else, but it really looks like JBots has a plan to build from within with some veterans sprinkled in as depth signings or mentors. I'm in the camp of i don't really expect that much. I really don't want JBots to make a move just to make a move. Most of the times we've done that it hasn't worked out. Theyve tried to transfer what they did in Rochester last year to the big team. I think this is also correct. Sometimes you feel that all the camp battles are about finding out if you have enough warm bodies to complete a roster. This season it feels different. It feels like our camp is about which talented player is going to make our team better. As many as 4 1st rd picks could make this team full time this season (Dahlin, Mittelstud, Thompson and Nylander). Also 4 2nd rd picks (Bailey, Asplund and Guhle), 3 long-term developmental players in Baptiste, Nelson and Ullmark, plus 2 SHL stars (Olofsson and Pilut) all have a chance. Talent in the organization is becoming less and less of an issue. The issue that remains is whether that talent will morph into NHL production. I think Jbot is willing to wait and see what happens during camp before making any other significant move. That said, will ge try a couple of PTOs as insurance? Like a Winnick or .......? Not that it's a significant move but what do you do with Scandella, McCabe, Guhle, Hunwick, Beaulieu, Dahlin, Antipin, Falk, Borgen, Tennyson, Risto, Bogosian, Nelson, Pilut, Fedun, Hickey, Bryson, Stephens, Martin, am I missing anybody?? That's alot of Dmen for 2 teams, here and Rochester. Somebody has to go, I would think??
