He missed a large chunk of time due to injury. He played well until then but I’m guessing the sample size was too small for that sort of commitment. Its based off your last contract and Smith had a better entry level deal than the other two. Remember, he was a college free agent and the Sabres had to outbid other teams for him. As far as I am able to tell, all these guys have just signed their QO. He also signed a few years after Baptiste and Bailey (too lazy to look up whether it was 2 or 3 years earlier).
