 He missed a large chunk of time due to injury. He played well until then but I’m guessing the sample size was too small for that sort of commitment.

Makes sense.  Thought his play before the injury bought him the 2nd year.  Guess not.

Nope, it’s because the Sabres had to give him a larger qualifying offer.

Its based off your last contract and Smith had a better entry level deal than the other two.

Remember, he was a college free agent and the Sabres had to outbid other teams for him.

As far as I am able to tell, all these guys have just signed their QO.

As far as I am able to tell, all these guys have just signed their QO.

He also signed a few years after Baptiste and Bailey (too lazy to look up whether it was 2 or 3 years earlier).  Even if they were maxed out, that cap only goes up over time.
