RFA Signings

Malone, Bailey, Baptiste and O'Regan have all been re-signed to single year two way contracts.  Wilson was re-signed for 2 years and Reinhart and Smith are still unsigned. Last season Jbot seemed to re-sign much of the depth like Criscuolo and Tennyson to 2 year deals.  Other the Wilson no two year deals so far.  Is the fact that Smith hasn't been signed a reflection that his might be a two year deal?  Should we read anything into 1 year deals for everyone else?

CBA is ten years ending after 2021/22 season.

Seattle expansion draft will follow the 2019/20 season.

I was looking at Capfriendly, and we are in an interesting situation for next off-season. Bailey, Malone and Baptiste will be regular RFAs, which explains their one year deals. However, Girgensons, Larsson, McCabe, ERod, Baloo, Ullmark, O’Regan and Wedgewood will all be RFAs also but with arbitration rights. I can see as few as 2 players back from that group.

Our only UFAs after next season are Pommers and Moulson who won’t be back.  We also have 14 players signed for 2019-20 (50 mill).

If I had to guess after looking at the cap situation for this coming season and the year after Jbot is giving these guys 1 year prove it deals.  Are you NHL players? If not they’ll be gone      by next season except maybe Malone, who is really in his 2nd pro season.  I also think Jbot has an eye toward the Seattle expansion.  I expect Smith might be a slightly different case.  I think Jbot likes what he did last year and may sign him for two years to push out his arbitration year.

Thanks.  This is helpful info for people like me who don't drill down.  I also appreciate the no-snark attitude.

Did each accept their qualifying offer?  If that's the case, it shouldn't be quickly labeled as all a part of Botterill's plan.  The players have to actually agree to it.  So maybe Smith wants a longer contract and it isn't just about what Botterill wants.

Maybe this is a sign that next year is the year he thinks we will actually start to be competitive and this year is just separating the wheat from the chaff

Doesn't have to be mutually exclusive.  I think we're going to see a big influx of youngins throughout this season and let's hope it ends up like Toronto where they just start to take off from it.  This isn't 1995, it's a young man's game.  I think adding Mitts, Dahlin, Oloffson (I bet he's a regular by the end of the season) and another surprise young guy will make this team more competitive quicker than some think*.

*team gets atleast league average goaltending
