Off Season OT: New wave Playlist

I got into new wave/alt music in college during the 80’s. I also just finished reading former KROQ DJ and current XM First Wave DJ Richard Blade’s Autobiography and he was at the fore front of discovering and promoting bands like Berlin, Talk Talk, Depeche Mode and INXS.

I’m thinking the best 250-300 songs of that era (1977-1987). Bands can have more then one song on the list. Nominations? Should I do this in poll form?

EDIT: Please limit your suggestions to 4-5 songs at most per post. The goal here is to get as many people as possible to participate in building the Sabrespace New Wave Playlist. Thanks

I’ll start with two songs.

I’ll start with two songs.

B-52s Roam

Psychedelic Furs Ghost In You

Only because yoy'd mentioned the band; the song that they turned the lights on in Shea's about 3 years after they'd reinforced the balcony due to a U2 show (thankfully, they'd already reinforced it; getting crushed at a concert would've sucked) - INXS - Don't Change.

Better choice - The Smiths - How Soon Is Now?

Ok, how about London Calling and another favorite?

Sorry, can't name just one.

If really pressed and just off the top of my head ... White Man in Hammersmith Palais. I took one of my signatures from it.

It is high on my playlist, but it is hard for me to pick just one, or two.

Haircut 100: “Love Plus One” https://youtu.be/5_msHpEa3_Y

Souxie and the Banshees: “Peek-a-Boo” https://youtu.be/gGH_16SICL0

Tom Tom Club: “Genius of Love” https://youtu.be/ECiMhe4E0pI

The The: “This is the Day” https://youtu.be/FhWVJnKjtsQ

Talking Heads: “Once in a Lifetime” https://youtu.be/5IsSpAOD6K8

I could go on like this...

Good choices, although Siouxie's cover of the Beatles Dear Prudence is my favorite of hers

Also we got plenty of time (all off-season) to build this sucker; take your time, or "Save it For Later"

That said I'm going to add to of my favorites

14) Re-Flex - The Politics of Dancing (extended version)

15) Payola$ - Eyes of A Stranger

The Eyes of A Stranger may be my favorite song from the New Wave era or at least in my top 10.

Oh this is gonna be fun ...

I hope so.  Gives us something to do while living in a Northern Town.

One, this is smack dab in my wheelhouse.

Two, I might give a dozen different answers on a dozen different days.

Three, you’ve all identified so many of the songs.

Four, Sabres79 and Once in a Lifetime moved me to post. That would’ve been my answer, tonight.

The song that foreshadowed so much when I was young ... delivers as much today, so many years later. “They nailed it ... how could they have known”? Once in a Lifetime thrills in the front window and in the rear view mirror.

And I ask myself, “well, how did I get here?”.

Couple more:

T-Heads - Life During Wartime

Gowan - A Criminal Mind

I love Life During Wartime, but then again, I like most songs by the Talking Heads.  I even collect art by James Rizzi who did the artwork for Heads offshoot the Tom Tom Club's album cover.

However is Gowan really a new wave artist.  I think of him as Styx, which I'd classify as Prog Rock.

Side one of Strange Animal was definitely not Progressive. That he eventually decided to earn a living as a musician shouldn't be held against him.

The Spoons opened for him and he had purple hair in concert.

I guess with Buffalo so close to Canada we need at least one artist from the Great White North on our list.

Talk Talk - Talk Talk

The Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away

The Icicle Works - Birds Fly (Whisper to A Scream)

Brawndo, I'm surprised by how quickly When In Rome's The Promise came up.  I heard it the other day on XM First Wave and it was the first time I had heard it in 15-20 years.  I had forgotten about the excellent song.

DJ-Keith, thanks for the input, but if I listed all these it would take most of the fun about getting everyone's input into the list.  However, I love some of the more obscure tracks on this list, but however, no Killing Moon for the Bunnymen?

Would you mind if I went through your list and choose 10 songs to add to our group list that I think are a little more obscure?

Belgian band, but they have some good songs.

They're scared of your walk
They're scared of your talk
They're scared of your beat
They're scared if you show
Your emotions

Scared of what?
Scared of who?
Scared of that big thing freedom
Scared of fear
It can be fun
Mais je peu chanter
L'Ave Maria

On danse le java
On danse le java

I'm gonna do
What I like
What I feel
I'm gonna sing about the birds and the bees
Red socks and a black box

On danse le java
On danse le java

Now we are talking some music!  Although I grew up with what is now called "classic" rock, the 80s was when I had my first real job and these were the songs that were playing at the clubs when we would go out on the weekends.  Lots of tasty stuff.  I could toss out a list, but I'll just proffer a few (and maybe not so obscure):

The Cure - Hot Hot Hot!!!

The Stranglers - Golden Brown

Morrissey - Every Day is Like Sunday

Siouxsie & the Banshees - Cities in Dust

-EJ the DJ?

Under the Milky Way -- The Church

The Killing Moon -- Echo and the Bunnymen

Waiting for the Flood -- Love and Rockets

Gunning for the Buddha -- Shriekback

Heaven -- Psychedelic Furs

All of these bands have a lot of other great songs; tried to keep it to one per band.
