OSP at it again

I worked for his highness.  He is a class A A$$hole.  You can bet that any money he donated to build hospitals, etc. was not out of the goodness of his heart, it was to offset taxable gains that year.  Zero respect for that man.

Yes, his record of philanthropy puts other multi-billionaires to shame.

Does it?  Would be interesting to see that data, as a percent of assets.  I know in ROC he and Polisseni's have been pretty great, but it's hard to tell % wise who is awesome vs who isn't.  Also safe to assume a lot of stuff is private.  Either way, it's their money, they earned it.  Do what you will.

As for the Geese, they are just his way of pushing back against bad government.  Fighting the good fight in my opinion.  He'll pay that Naples School tax bill, but not before he has his say.  And if you source from somewhere other than the rag we know as the D&C you'll see he commented that the he tried the dog solution and others, didn't work, and pushes the geese to neighbors, which is not cool.  Instead, policy needs to change.  He's uniquely qualified to influence things more so than the average person.  Good job TG!

WTF is withholding local taxes going to do to change that?  Canada geese are protected under federal law.  There isn't a thing that can be done at the state and local level.

Force locals to manage.  If they can't manage they look up to state "yo, change this", state to fed, etc.  Smart approach from my view.  Not like he pays income tax  :nana:

He's better off bribing a fed to get the change than he is expecting a town to convince a state to convince the feds to change a treaty entailing migratory birds.

The Golisano thing is pretty breath-taking.

From what I had read (not much), part of the problem is that he's only at the property intermittently throughout the year. And when things are quiet on the grounds, the geese congregate and defecate.

But, as Chz suggested, ... DUDE. Buy a couple of high energy herding dogs and loose them on the grounds. And hire someone to handle and care for the dogs; that person can generally oversee the dispersal efforts.

My sense is that if a landowner disrupted the geese's visits for a long enough time, the geese would just stay away.

Golisano is a grade A arsehole.

This is true; in various places I've worked they've hired a guy with a dog to come walk around every day and chase the geese. The geese figure it out before long.

it's way cheaper to bribe the locals, and make them foot the bill for all the legwork to eventually get denied.

I can be there in 4 hours with 2 dogs all revved up if he likes PETA.

I can be there in 4 hours with 2 dogs and another truck load of friends if his neighbors don't mind some shooting.

Beer and smoked goose sausage the following weekend.

You'll want a more buttoned up contact than the one the interior decorator had.

This would be a total black op job .

No strings, no contracts. Total deniability that I know OSP.

OSP wants the local government to control the wildlife on his property. Fecking socialist, expecting the government to maintain his property.

Yep: “I have always believed that government has a responsibility to protect people,” Golisano stated in a release put out Monday. “We are not talking about a few geese who occasionally land for lunch. We are talking about up to 200 geese at a time that refuse to leave."

I don't know about you guys, but the crew on the 'Laurel' don't look like any of the sailors that I know.

I must be living in the wrong port city, or something.

That is some eye candy and their sailor suits are the best ones I've seen.

That ship is a floating hotel. It's to make money for him. If it's like any other corporate owned vacation rental the IRS governs the amount of personal use. Would assume that most of his properties are for making money. Like the one in the article. Uppity corporate AIRBNB.

Mr. NS, exactly how many sailors do you know? I will remind the witness that he is under oath. (The courtroom chatters and mutters and the judge threatens to clear it!)

Well, I looked at some semi-comparable house listings on that lake, and I still think $132K per year in property taxes is insane.  These are lakefront homes of comparable size, albeit with less frontage.  None of the homes lists for more than $1.3MM -- so even if OSP's house is worth $2MM, that is still a huge prop tax bill relative to prop value.

I will assume that Judge Smell is on the bench and, therefore, I plead the 5th on this one.

Oh, wait.  Is the trial in Canada?

That first one is $70K in taxes and only 151ft frontage.

We also don't know the acreage difference.

Not sure which one you're looking at -- the first one on my list is a 2642 sf house for $1.325MM but I don't see the prop taxes listed.

And I have the same opinion about $70K in taxes on a $1.3MM house!

you'll see he commented that the he tried the dog solution and others, didn't work, and pushes the geese to neighbors, which is not cool.

I’m not buying it. It’s a whack a mole approach, sure. But then that forces your neighbors to take similar actions. Until such time that the geese are persuaded to congregate on public unimproved land.

WTF is withholding local taxes going to do to change that? Canada geese are protected under federal law. There isn't a thing that can be done at the state and local level.

Exactly.

I’m all for management of nuisance geese, btw. The green space in the City of Tonawanda along the river (forget the name of the park) is mostly unusable because of all the goose poop.

Oh, and hey. The land I’m concerned with is public in nature.

Cheering Golisano is worse than cheering for the house in gambling — it’s cheering for a house that is reasonably thought to be crooked.

This is life in WNY.  $40.00 per thousand assessment is a good rule of thumb, the bulk of which is school tax.  We have the highest rates in USA last I read deeply on it.  So $200k house is $8k per year.  My understanding is that the rates are not different for lake-front vs non-lake-front, so you have to fight assessment which Golisano has been successful with in the past.  Finger Lakes real estate is on fire, so assessments go up and long time owners get mad.  All said housing costs are lower here than elsewhere, so rate looks worse, but our schools are generally pretty great, but also tons of state pensions to pay, etc etc.
