The Home-ownership Thread

This could go in the awesome thread, but I'll post it here. My buddy used to be a union floor guy. I never knew that! So now I get professional advice and help on my man cave job. He's literally never mentioned it in the last 10 years.

Today is the very first day in my life that I have ever felt old. I was laying laminate flooring in my man cave for the past 10 hours by myself. My knees are ***** killing me. Ok fine. I've been kneeling all damn day. Knees hurting, I understand. But my back is screaming! I've dealt with back pain everyday of my life since I was 12. It doesn't even hurt anymore. Or so I thought! Jesus Christ, bring on the bourbon. I have ice packs on both knees for Pete's sake!

Back to home ownership:

When the thunderstorm blew through last night, it blew over one of our trees.  This tree has a sordid history so I'm not entirely upset it's fallen over.

When we bought the house, we had a tree next to the house taken down (it was rubbing against the eave).  While the arborist was there, he pointed out a tree on the rear of the lot that he said would probably have to come down "in the next few years."  Later that summer, the power company "trimmed" (hacked) the trees at the rear of the lot to provide clearance to the power lines.  This tree was totally stripped of branches all the way up to the very top, where they left a few.  It looked like something drawn by Dr. Seuss.  My wife asked them to take it all the way down at the time as it did not look viable, but they left it.  Last night it was blown over.  My wife called the power company and we're going to file a claim for them to pay for the tree to be removed.  They're supposed to send an adjuster out to look at it.  Meanwhile, I'm getting an estimate from my arborist because I expect the power company to provide a low-ball settlement offer.

Fortunately, it looks like the entire tree fell in the corner of the yard away from the house and didn't take anything of substance out with it.  The new roof on the house is okay.

Firewood!!

Yep, that's the way it worked out.

I trimmed off the leaves and small branches with my pruners and my crappy pole saw.

Then today my friend Mark (pictured) brought his chainsaw by and cut up what was left and yes, took it home for firewood.  It was about two wheelbarrows full.

Just saw your friend Mark and reminded me of Michael Palin of Monty Python.

I've wanted to do this since we bought the house last year, and finally did it:  I roofed over my patio.  When we bought the house there was a patio cover, but it just had trellises on the top.

I removed the trellises and supporting members

I even removed the frame attached to the house because I didn't like the way it was attached.  As it turned out, the primary attachment points were 5 lag bolts, only one of which was actually in a stud!

Then I put it back together, replacing the top frame with roofing joists

...and decking

...and tar paper

...and shingles

...and finally, the flashing to the siding.

All I've got left is some painting.
