From the Edmonton Journal:

If Sabres’ owner Tom Golisano decides to sell and he’s made noises of that, Jim Balsillie and his kazillions from BlackBerry might be in the picture but there’s also a fellow named Terry Pegula who just gave $88 million to Penn State to build a rink for NCAA Division 1 play and fund scholarships there. His wife Kim is from suburban Buffalo. Pegula’s made his money in natural gas business ...

"and even though his house is in Boalsburg, he goes to Wegmans for breakfast. He goes over there for breakfast and coffee every morning that he’s here. It’s just his thing.”

His wife went to Houghton College and their daughter born in Buffalo. Their daughter is a budding tennis star in the juniors down in Boca. He's worth $3-4 billion....3 times what Golisano is. He loves hockey, used to coach his son's team growing up. The same reporter broke the story when he gave the $88 million to Penn St.

PA...only thing that will give you a stroke....they are Christian to the core, and huge Republican donors.

Maybe he's had a few stone crabs with ol' sugar packets down in Boca.

Quinn took ownership in this team to get taxed at capital gains rates instead of income, a difference of over 20%. Those rates head up 5% at the end of the year, although I don't think a deal can close that fast. It would be worth an extra $10 million to Tommy G.

Dear Baby Jesus......please save us!

Whats the point? The NHL will never allow him to own a team, and he only wants a team that he can relocate to Hamilton, and then to Kitchener/Waterloo once he builds an arena. if he were successful in getting the Sabres, it would only be a matter of a couple years til the are in Canada. He doesn't want to be an owner of an NHL team not in his homes area.

As for the other guy, as long as he cans Regier ASAP and brings in a guy who doesn't spend his day cowering in the corner of his office afraid to make a deal or let someone go, he would be alright with me

Terrible, awful, hideous "journalism." What does "getting vibes" mean, exactly?

Honestly, I stopped reading after the Joe Thornton thing right at the start. He's not paid to score goals. It's nothing more than another bitter rant out of Boston about the one who got away.

He's been rejected by the NHL, what, 3 times now? How can anyone in the hockey media seriously suggest his name at this point? Next thing you know, this writer will inform us about that new BBQ place around the corner jointly owned by PETA and the local orthodox jewish center.

Balsillie would NOT buy this team. I think it was Larry Quinn who talked on WGR last year who said they were willing to sell but only because the owner would be better for the team, not because they had to. He said noway they would sell it to anyone who was thinking of moving the team out of Buffalo.

As for Pegula, it's very interesting. He's a hockey fan. If he spends the money and hires the right advisers and management staff and sits back and enjoys the ride, it could be good for the team. Any time you have a guy who is such a big fan of a sport, you have to wonder if he'll want to have a say in day to day operations.

I'll support any owner who shows that sycophant Larry Quinn the door.
