There is a genre of music, in my mind anyway, that consists of songs I totally never heard when they came out, but became familiar with them from dive bars.  They generally sound garage-band-ish in style, but "tighter" than that musically.  They include bands such as

  • The Raconteurs (Steady as She Goes, Level)
  • Franz Fedinand (Take Me Out)
  • Portugal the Man (I Feel It Still)
  • Jet (Are You Gonna Be My Girl)
  • Violent Femmes (Blister in the Sun)

There are others but that's a representative sample to try to capture the sound.

I will say that Jack White is a guitar riff master.

Jet is another good one.  Their debut album was solid.

It really was, but I always felt it was a little too polished for the band they were.  The piano ballad and their attempt at a "Every Rose Has A Thorn" type song was a bit hard to stomach, but I get what they (or their producer) were trying to do.  I never got to see them but I appreciated that MC5 vibe they brought.

Another garage shredder from that era I just got into last year is Ty Segall.

He has some great songs and did the best cover of Lowrider I've ever heard.

I just saw Airborne Toxic Event in concert for the 3rd time. They are the greatest band you’ve never heard of. They are on tour now. Highly recommended.

One of my favorites as well.  Have tickets to see them for the first time in October.  Show has been rescheduled multiple times thanks to covid.

The show was awesome. I can’t believe they haven’t gotten more popular. The lead singer went to Stanford. The lyrics are really thought provoking.

I was born in the rain by the Ponchatrain
Underneath the Louisiana moon
I don't mind the strain of a hurricane
They come around every June
High black water – a devil's daughter
She's hard and she's cold and she's mean
But nobody's taught her that it takes
A lot of water to wash away New Orleans
