  1. i saw on shop.nhl.com they had a coupon that said 20% off sitewide + free shipping on orders 50+, some exclusions apply. the exclusions were the typical, jerseys, specialty items, but at the end it said "other". hmm, other? i tried a sweatshirt which i really liked. i added it to the cart, hit the coupon it said. this item doesnt apply. it matched the criteria for what should have worked but it didnt. i tried a different shirt, again, it didnt work. finally i added about 25 to 30 shirts/sweatshirts to my cart, making sure that all of them matched the criteria for the coupon eligibility. The total bill was 1200 dollars, which as we all know 20% off should be 240 dollars. i added the coupon. 5 dollars off. i didnt want to bother to figure out which item actually worked, but it is such nonsense false advertising that almost all of the items did not accept the coupon. i called NHL shop support, and the lady was nice enough to tell me that not everything will work for the coupon, and she cant help me. i felt pretty pleased. needless to say i didnt order from them. i was able to find a couple of hockey tshirts in my size from amazon for 6 dollars, and even a springtime coat for 14 dollars, so it wasnt all bad.
  2. When is everyone going to see The Last Jedi? I'm going Thursday at 7 PM
  3. Who's doing it? I know Chz is. I think ink mentioned it? I'm starting to come around on the idea. I have a car that is perfect for it and I like the idea of being able to just fire the app up when I'm bored and take a couple fares. Has it been worthwhile or a waste of time?
  4. So one of the Hospitals I work at may be affected by a strike because Hospital management want to eliminate its contribution to the Unions pension fund. Folks are not thrilled with idea of a 401k because they don’t often live up to goods workers are sold and can be controlled by management. NYC area hospital systems could be affected. Unions have their plusses and minuses but in regards to health insurance and pensions and the reasonable dues make it worthwhile to me. Still interested in peoples thoughts?
  5. 1st, let me say, like Zack Kassian, I'm a fan of the concept of topic tags. However, unless they are used consistently - they are fairly useless. The big benefit when used properly, is that when you click on a tag - all topics with that tag are shown. My options are: 1. Get rid of them completely 2. Force at least one tag per topic (topic starter choice) 3. Force topic starter to choose from a list of predefined tags (this would make the best use of tags) 4. Allow choice of predetermined tags, but don't force every topic to have one. 5. Keep as is
  6. Don't know if anyone else here fly fishes or ties their own flies. Some combination of the heat, these gin and tonics, and the lack of hockey that's making me crazy but I decided to whip up some Buffalo Sabres inspired Copper Prince nymphs. I give you the Blue and Gold Dahlin: There's some green peacock SLF in there because every Sabres fan knows "Blue and Gold make green." The brown hackle... our performance last season ? Politics....

How would you like it handled? First, I think politics, as it intersects the world of sports (Buffalo sports in particular), is perfectly fine. Not sure what to do about the rest.... Constructive suggestions?
  8. The Athletic Managing Editor James Mirtle confirmed this past weekend that the website will be expanding its coverage to having beat writer cover the Sabres next season. The Athletic proves alternative coverage on a National Level and a Local Level as well. They have hired many writers from National Outlets such as SI, ESPN and Fox Sports. In addition they have hired local writers usually from the area’s newspapers such as Arthur Staple and Mike Russo. Mirtle also asked what writers fans would like to see covering the team for the site. The overwhelming favorite was Joe Yerdon who covers the Sabres for NHL.com. Other responses included John Vogl The Buffalo News, Matt Bove from Channel 7 and Bill Hoppe from the Olean Times Herald. Given that there are rumblings The Buffalo News is in financial trouble and that Vogl has been on the Sabres Beat for awhile he appears to be the logical candidate to be hired. Who would you like to see covering the Sabres?
  9. So, I have a couple weddings coming up, one on May 5th and the other sometime in June. I need a new suit. I can't buy off the department store rack. That stuff doesn't fit me and frankly the material quality always seems poor for the price. I wasn't super happy with the last pair of suits I bought from Men's Wearhouse. I didn't like the tailoring process, although the materials were in line with the price. My brother has had good luck with Jos A Bank, but I'm wary of the chain stores. I would still go to one I guess, but it's not my first choice. A local operation would be nice, but I don't know if I can afford a real tailor. I feel like the best I can do on a suit is like $400 and I'd need to really like it. Anyone here have experience with Bureau downtown? Or the New York Store in Lancaster? Or those italian guys, Uomo da Milano, at the Galleria? Some other hidden gem? Should I just kill a guy and take his suit?
  10. This forum is always good for advice on topics outside of hockey and I bet this will be no different. I know Bio has regaled us with stories of her house nightmares, so maybe others have things to contribute? Although home-ownership not in our immediate plans, Josie and I talk frequently about our desire to stop throwing money into the apartment rental void. Our lives are still a little too unpredictable at the moment, but I think within the next two years I want to take a stab at it. Now, I'm no stranger to making hasty and risky financial decisions, but I've lived in enough rental homes and done enough of my own work in those homes to know what I'm getting in to, and I know that preparation is key. I don't want to go into this without knowing what I'm doing. Things I'm curious about: 1. The process of home buying. How did you go about finding, inspecting, financing, etc? I spend a lot of time messing around on Zillow and stuff, but I've never spoken to a realtor or anything. 2. Financial incentives. What is out there for young adults, first time home buyers, people who don't make a lot of money, etc.? 3. What improvement jobs have you tackled yourself? What were your results? Tips? 4. Foreclosed homes and short sales. Ever bought one? How did it go? Obviously this is just an open thread. These are just my conversation starters.
  11. http://espnmediazone.com/us/espn-statement-regarding-grantland/ This sucks. It felt inevitable with Simmons getting axed and a handful of prominent writers leaving for greener (or more certain) pastures, but it's still brutal. Grantland had some of the best sports writing anywhere on the internet, not to mention the non-sports content, and now it's gone. Meanwhile, ESPN is willing to shell out several million dollars each for Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. All I know is I'll become an avid reader of wherever Bill Barnwell and Zach Lowe end up.
  12. So, my wife and I have made a decision to move out of Virginia down to the Charlotte area sometime next year. A lot of factors came into play, and we hashed out these things before making such a crucial decision. We had considered other metro areas, but we ultimately settled for this. I know that some SS members have either lived in Charlotte in the past, or are still there. What areas would you guys recommend for affordable and safe places to live? Areas like Lake Norman are out of the question since there’s absolutely no way we could afford to live there. It doesn’t have to be city proper. We could even consider Concord or Kannapolis. We just don’t want to live where we would not feel safe, and I want to minimize commuting distance as much as possible. Also, if there are other things that we need to know about that I haven’t thought about, feel free to pass it on. Just don’t recommend Elevation church to me whatsoever.
  13. I will start with the one at the top of my list… Progressive - Flo and Co. What say you?

  16. Has anyone else seen this show on HBO? If freaking amazing and I can't believe it's not the #1 story worldwide. Doctors at the Philadelphia Children's Hospital are curing Leukemia. 90% of 39 pediatric patients treated are in full remission. Some as early as four weeks. It's an amazing story. Doctor's are using a modified version on the HIV virus to attack and kill cancer cells. This has to be the biggest medical breakthrough in my lifetime. If you have a chance to catch it, I suggest it.
  17. I’m driving in the car with my wife in the passenger seat when a person in front of me was driving like an idiot. Next thing I know, wife says to me…”what is it you are doing with your hands?”. I then realize I am doing the WTF Wave, and have since realized I do it a lot. To the person in front of me at the supermarket blocking the aisle, to cars that come to close to me when I’m walking, all kinds of car driving moments, etc… I think I’ve become Ryan Miller, but with no goalie equipment on. Help!
  18. I’ve had a problem for month or so using Google Chrome on my iphone. Sometimes, embedded tweets won’t show up at all, other times they just load slow. Sometimes if I go in and out of a thread, they may then show up. Just upgraded to an iphone 12, and problem is still there. Anyone else seeing anything similar?
  19. A lot of us may know about Hunter's Hope from Jim & Jill Kelly. Here's a similar organization started by Sabres alum Curtis Brown and his wife Ami. https://www.theaubribrownclub.org/ Check it out. We all may know others who need the help.
  20. I can't find the old reading thread from a few years ago,, so I thought I'd start a new one.. After all, someone started one about favorite greasy spoon joints. Plus, this gets my mind off of our boys possibly attending an Andrew Peters golf clinic. Thus, I've started reading some books simultaneously. The Romanov Sisters by Helen Rappaport. Scimitar's Edge by Marvin Olasky. Far From Rome, Near to God, edited by Richard Bennett and Martin Buckingham. (Don't hold this one against me.) Medium is not important. It could be a newspaper or magazine article. It could even be something from BuzzFeed and other electronic media.
  21. I personally would treat these as foreign actors who have access to technology which we can not hold a candle to.
