  1. The Athletic Managing Editor James Mirtle confirmed this past weekend that the website will be expanding its coverage to having beat writer cover the Sabres next season. The Athletic proves alternative coverage on a National Level and a Local Level as well. They have hired many writers from National Outlets such as SI, ESPN and Fox Sports. In addition they have hired local writers usually from the area’s newspapers such as Arthur Staple and Mike Russo. Mirtle also asked what writers fans would like to see covering the team for the site. The overwhelming favorite was Joe Yerdon who covers the Sabres for NHL.com. Other responses included John Vogl The Buffalo News, Matt Bove from Channel 7 and Bill Hoppe from the Olean Times Herald. Given that there are rumblings The Buffalo News is in financial trouble and that Vogl has been on the Sabres Beat for awhile he appears to be the logical candidate to be hired. Who would you like to see covering the Sabres?
  2. So, I have a couple weddings coming up, one on May 5th and the other sometime in June. I need a new suit. I can't buy off the department store rack. That stuff doesn't fit me and frankly the material quality always seems poor for the price. I wasn't super happy with the last pair of suits I bought from Men's Wearhouse. I didn't like the tailoring process, although the materials were in line with the price. My brother has had good luck with Jos A Bank, but I'm wary of the chain stores. I would still go to one I guess, but it's not my first choice. A local operation would be nice, but I don't know if I can afford a real tailor. I feel like the best I can do on a suit is like $400 and I'd need to really like it. Anyone here have experience with Bureau downtown? Or the New York Store in Lancaster? Or those italian guys, Uomo da Milano, at the Galleria? Some other hidden gem? Should I just kill a guy and take his suit?
  3. i saw on shop.nhl.com they had a coupon that said 20% off sitewide + free shipping on orders 50+, some exclusions apply. the exclusions were the typical, jerseys, specialty items, but at the end it said "other". hmm, other? i tried a sweatshirt which i really liked. i added it to the cart, hit the coupon it said. this item doesnt apply. it matched the criteria for what should have worked but it didnt. i tried a different shirt, again, it didnt work. finally i added about 25 to 30 shirts/sweatshirts to my cart, making sure that all of them matched the criteria for the coupon eligibility. The total bill was 1200 dollars, which as we all know 20% off should be 240 dollars. i added the coupon. 5 dollars off. i didnt want to bother to figure out which item actually worked, but it is such nonsense false advertising that almost all of the items did not accept the coupon. i called NHL shop support, and the lady was nice enough to tell me that not everything will work for the coupon, and she cant help me. i felt pretty pleased. needless to say i didnt order from them. i was able to find a couple of hockey tshirts in my size from amazon for 6 dollars, and even a springtime coat for 14 dollars, so it wasnt all bad.

  9. I really envy you northerners. Here it is almost mid-December and it's 82° outside at 7:45PM. It has dropped below 70 for a total of two hours in the last 11 days. I don't care where you live, the AC shouldn't be running this close to Christmas at 3AM. In the last seven weeks we've had .3" of rain. What's the weather like where you're all at?
  10. Why not. My DIY is coming in the mail this week: brakes for Van-dor the Unstoppable. Shop price, roughly $500 parts and labor. Internet price for parts (nice, but not OEM): $200. Spending a couple hours in the driveway with something to listen to and perhaps a beverage or two: a net plus. One of the most enjoyable I did was replacing the clutch on my washing machine. Fun project and well documented both in the paper manual tucked inside the panel and youtube videos. Plus, it was pretty easy even though I had nearly the entire thing torn apart.

That said, he posted on twitter today that his brother in-law, who by all accounts is a hard working man with a family who needs him, has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis and is in need of a double-lung transplant. Yeah, you read that right. While their insurance can cover the medical costs, the travel and lodging costs for making many trips back and forth to the Cleveland Clinic (an institute without which I would not be so lucky to have Josie by my side today) are going to be very expensive. Since this is the time of year where people are looking to do some good deeds, I hope that maybe we can step up here at Sabrespace and show weave and his brother in-law some love.   17. I took the plunge and signed up for Google's Project Fi today. I came off of contract with Verizon quite a while ago but I haven't upgraded because my Galaxy S3 has been fine and my payments were acceptably low. I've been waiting to see how the beta testing of Project Fi went and apparently it went well. Google opened everything up today with a GREAT deal on the new Nexus 5X and 6P phones. https://fi.google.com/about/ Crunching some numbers worked out like this. Verizon was basically forcing me to pay for a 3gb data plan that I don't use. I'm on wifi all the time, so I'm averaging less than 1gb of data per month. Verizon's 1GB plan is $30/mo and I've been getting a "discounted" 3GB plan for $36/mo. So I had no reason not to take that plan. Service in total was coming to $62/mo after taxes and fees. Project Fi's data plans are incredibly good. You pay a flat rate of $10/GB per month and you get credited for whatever you don't use by the megabyte. So you basically get money back each month for whatever data you don't consume. On top of that, if you pay for less data each month and you go over, you get charged for the next GB of service, then refunded whatever you don't use of that. So in a nutshell, you only ever pay for what you use. So for me, I take the lowest plan at 1GB/mo, add in the service and a $5 protection plan, and I'm paying $35/mo + tax. Now, I could have opted to take the Nexus 5X on a 24 month payment plan where I wouldn't pay anything for the phone up front and my monthly payment for the phone would have been like...$8 and change per month. But I opted to just buy the phone outright for the greatly discounted price of $199 plus tax. That's $150 less than normal. This means that even if I don't like Project Fi, I can stop using their service after a month and take my discounted phone over to another carrier. I'm not locked into ANY contracts. $35/mo. What a deal. The phone pays for itself in 8 months just by lowering my plan costs. Google is only offering this deal until April 7th and it's "while supplies last". So if you're like me and not locked into a contract or anything and have been debating a new phone or switching service providers, you might as well jump on this. I've only heard GREAT things from my tech nerd friends who have been on Project Fi since the beta started.
  18. This forum is always good for advice on topics outside of hockey and I bet this will be no different. I know Bio has regaled us with stories of her house nightmares, so maybe others have things to contribute? Although home-ownership not in our immediate plans, Josie and I talk frequently about our desire to stop throwing money into the apartment rental void. Our lives are still a little too unpredictable at the moment, but I think within the next two years I want to take a stab at it. Now, I'm no stranger to making hasty and risky financial decisions, but I've lived in enough rental homes and done enough of my own work in those homes to know what I'm getting in to, and I know that preparation is key. I don't want to go into this without knowing what I'm doing. Things I'm curious about: 1. The process of home buying. How did you go about finding, inspecting, financing, etc? I spend a lot of time messing around on Zillow and stuff, but I've never spoken to a realtor or anything. 2. Financial incentives. What is out there for young adults, first time home buyers, people who don't make a lot of money, etc.? 3. What improvement jobs have you tackled yourself? What were your results? Tips? 4. Foreclosed homes and short sales. Ever bought one? How did it go? Obviously this is just an open thread. These are just my conversation starters.

It felt inevitable with Simmons getting axed and a handful of prominent writers leaving for greener (or more certain) pastures, but it's still brutal. Grantland had some of the best sports writing anywhere on the internet, not to mention the non-sports content, and now it's gone. Meanwhile, ESPN is willing to shell out several million dollars each for Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. All I know is I'll become an avid reader of wherever Bill Barnwell and Zach Lowe end up.
  20. I'm a new season ticket holder (only four years on the waiting list, I thought it would be much longer) and like many season ticket holders, I'm looking to sell some of my seats. Looking for advice from some of you who do the same. It seems like stub hub milks both the buyer and seller for fees and I'm unsure about Craigslist. Any advice? BTW, there in section 114 row 8 and I split the tickets with someone so I don't have all the games. Thanks

  23. Caught the pilot of the series last night. Thought it was a cool little show. Kinda like a cross between Arli$$ and Entourage. Always enjoy the Rock, an underrated actor who has been lumped into the muscle head genre. Thought Peter Berg (he is a producer) forced himself into the show. His character didn't resemble any coach I've seen in real life. I do like the fact that the Rock's NFL career seems to have ended while knocking out/killing a Buffalo Bill during a game.
  24. It's been several years since I've been back to BFLO and I'm looking for a place with the best traditional Buffalo chicken wings somewhere along the way from the airport to Canada. I know of all the little holes in the wall on the outskirts but I'm not familiar any more with what is downtown...... Or in the area I mentioned. I have friends that are flying in and heading to Toronto and are looking for some real chicken wings. I plan to send them to Charlie's, but also need a wing place. I wanted to send them to East Aurora for wings but I don't think they're going to be able to get out that way. Any recommendations?
  25. Which series is everybody watching? I've pretty much given up on everything on TV besides sports and the occasional NatGeo or similar educational program. Right now I'm starting season 3 of House of Cards, just finished season 2 of Orange is the New Black and just started season 2 of Peaky Blinders. Any recommendations to fill the time?
