  1. When is everyone going to see The Last Jedi? I'm going Thursday at 7 PM
  2. Who's doing it? I know Chz is. I think ink mentioned it? I'm starting to come around on the idea. I have a car that is perfect for it and I like the idea of being able to just fire the app up when I'm bored and take a couple fares. Has it been worthwhile or a waste of time?
  3. So one of the Hospitals I work at may be affected by a strike because Hospital management want to eliminate its contribution to the Unions pension fund. Folks are not thrilled with idea of a 401k because they don’t often live up to goods workers are sold and can be controlled by management. NYC area hospital systems could be affected. Unions have their plusses and minuses but in regards to health insurance and pensions and the reasonable dues make it worthwhile to me. Still interested in peoples thoughts?
  4. 1st, let me say, like Zack Kassian, I'm a fan of the concept of topic tags. However, unless they are used consistently - they are fairly useless. The big benefit when used properly, is that when you click on a tag - all topics with that tag are shown. My options are: 1. Get rid of them completely 2. Force at least one tag per topic (topic starter choice) 3. Force topic starter to choose from a list of predefined tags (this would make the best use of tags) 4. Allow choice of predetermined tags, but don't force every topic to have one. 5. Keep as is
  5. Don't know if anyone else here fly fishes or ties their own flies. Some combination of the heat, these gin and tonics, and the lack of hockey that's making me crazy but I decided to whip up some Buffalo Sabres inspired Copper Prince nymphs.     Politics....

    How would you like it handled? First, I think politics, as it intersects the world of sports (Buffalo sports in particular), is perfectly fine. Not sure what to do about the rest.... Constructive suggestions?
  7. The Athletic Managing Editor James Mirtle confirmed this past weekend that the website will be expanding its coverage to having beat writer cover the Sabres next season. The Athletic proves alternative coverage on a National Level and a Local Level as well. They have hired many writers from National Outlets such as SI, ESPN and Fox Sports. In addition they have hired local writers usually from the area’s newspapers such as Arthur Staple and Mike Russo. Mirtle also asked what writers fans would like to see covering the team for the site. The overwhelming favorite was Joe Yerdon who covers the Sabres for NHL.com. Other responses included John Vogl The Buffalo News, Matt Bove from Channel 7 and Bill Hoppe from the Olean Times Herald. Given that there are rumblings The Buffalo News is in financial trouble and that Vogl has been on the Sabres Beat for awhile he appears to be the logical candidate to be hired. Who would you like to see covering the Sabres?
  8. So, I have a couple weddings coming up, one on May 5th and the other sometime in June. I need a new suit. I can't buy off the department store rack. That stuff doesn't fit me and frankly the material quality always seems poor for the price. I wasn't super happy with the last pair of suits I bought from Men's Wearhouse. I didn't like the tailoring process, although the materials were in line with the price. My brother has had good luck with Jos A Bank, but I'm wary of the chain stores. I would still go to one I guess, but it's not my first choice. A local operation would be nice, but I don't know if I can afford a real tailor. I feel like the best I can do on a suit is like $400 and I'd need to really like it. Anyone here have experience with Bureau downtown? Or the New York Store in Lancaster? Or those italian guys, Uomo da Milano, at the Galleria? Some other hidden gem? Should I just kill a guy and take his suit?
  9. This forum is always good for advice on topics outside of hockey and I bet this will be no different. I know Bio has regaled us with stories of her house nightmares, so maybe others have things to contribute? Although home-ownership not in our immediate plans, Josie and I talk frequently about our desire to stop throwing money into the apartment rental void. Our lives are still a little too unpredictable at the moment, but I think within the next two years I want to take a stab at it. Now, I'm no stranger to making hasty and risky financial decisions, but I've lived in enough rental homes and done enough of my own work in those homes to know what I'm getting in to, and I know that preparation is key. I don't want to go into this without knowing what I'm doing. Things I'm curious about: 1. The process of home buying. How did you go about finding, inspecting, financing, etc? I spend a lot of time messing around on Zillow and stuff, but I've never spoken to a realtor or anything. 2. Financial incentives. What is out there for young adults, first time home buyers, people who don't make a lot of money, etc.? 3. What improvement jobs have you tackled yourself? What were your results? Tips? 4. Foreclosed homes and short sales. Ever bought one? How did it go? Obviously this is just an open thread. These are just my conversation starters.

It felt inevitable with Simmons getting axed and a handful of prominent writers leaving for greener (or more certain) pastures, but it's still brutal. Grantland had some of the best sports writing anywhere on the internet, not to mention the non-sports content, and now it's gone. Meanwhile, ESPN is willing to shell out several million dollars each for Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith. All I know is I'll become an avid reader of wherever Bill Barnwell and Zach Lowe end up.
  11. So, my wife and I have made a decision to move out of Virginia down to the Charlotte area sometime next year. A lot of factors came into play, and we hashed out these things before making such a crucial decision. We had considered other metro areas, but we ultimately settled for this. I know that some SS members have either lived in Charlotte in the past, or are still there. What areas would you guys recommend for affordable and safe places to live? Areas like Lake Norman are out of the question since there’s absolutely no way we could afford to live there. It doesn’t have to be city proper. We could even consider Concord or Kannapolis. We just don’t want to live where we would not feel safe, and I want to minimize commuting distance as much as possible. Also, if there are other things that we need to know about that I haven’t thought about, feel free to pass it on. Just don’t recommend Elevation church to me whatsoever.

  15. Has anyone else seen this show on HBO? If freaking amazing and I can't believe it's not the #1 story worldwide. Doctors at the Philadelphia Children's Hospital are curing Leukemia. 90% of 39 pediatric patients treated are in full remission. Some as early as four weeks. It's an amazing story. Doctor's are using a modified version on the HIV virus to attack and kill cancer cells. This has to be the biggest medical breakthrough in my lifetime. If you have a chance to catch it, I suggest it.
  16. I haven’t been using ride sharing much since COVID. My last two rides have been unbearable. The drivers absolutely cranking the ***** out of whatever garbage they are listening to and the temperature has been about 10 degrees in the wrong direction. I don’t recall it being this bad pre-pandemic. Has anyone else had experiences like this?

It's time for the 2022 edition of the all-important-useless-Star-Wars-reference/character-based-on-player-name draft rankings: 2022 edition.   19. I’ve used both AirBnb and VRBO before, and have often wondered…do both the owner and renter get hit with service fees? I am renting a place in Florida next winter for 7 weeks through AirBnb, and got hit with a $600 “service fee”…not counting cleaning fee or sales taxes. PS I quit using VRBO as their fees are even more ridiculous than AirBnb.

  23. Why not. My DIY is coming in the mail this week: brakes for Van-dor the Unstoppable. Shop price, roughly $500 parts and labor. Internet price for parts (nice, but not OEM): $200. Spending a couple hours in the driveway with something to listen to and perhaps a beverage or two: a net plus. One of the most enjoyable I did was replacing the clutch on my washing machine. Fun project and well documented both in the paper manual tucked inside the panel and youtube videos. Plus, it was pretty easy even though I had nearly the entire thing torn apart.

That said, he posted on twitter today that his brother in-law, who by all accounts is a hard working man with a family who needs him, has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis and is in need of a double-lung transplant. Yeah, you read that right. While their insurance can cover the medical costs, the travel and lodging costs for making many trips back and forth to the Cleveland Clinic (an institute without which I would not be so lucky to have Josie by my side today) are going to be very expensive. Since this is the time of year where people are looking to do some good deeds, I hope that maybe we can step up here at Sabrespace and show weave and his brother in-law some love.
