Is the Buffalo job that great of a challenge?

    • The roster has a just a few holes, some of which at least might be filled internally
    • They're one season removed from being the 3rd highest scoring team in the league, and all the top scores, save Mitts & Olofsson, are still here
    • They have a good cap situation
    • They have one of the top prospect pools
    • Their core is just coming into their prime
    • They have a good and deep defensive core
    • They have a goalie that just stepped up to a high quality starter and another close prospect on the rise
    • They just fired a fine development coach that couldn't quite get the team to win enough games
    • With the a new perspective and the right coaching, the Sabres could easily be a playoff team, perhaps SC contenders

Completely agree, which (IMO) makes the sentiments I was responding to hold even less water

Turn down interviews or turn down job offers? I am mostly speaking to job offers.

I am not an NHL or NFL coach, but have worked with the NCAA and USOC. There are 2 types of coaches that will turn down a chance at a HC position at National Championship/Olympic level.

    1. Senior Head Coaches with accomplished resume's. They will take a year off, work as an independent contractor, advisor, etc. before the enter a program without institutional support.
    2. Assistants in top tier programs. Those coaches have stability and are already competing for National, World, or Olympic Gold Medals. At that point in their career they will hold out for the right promotion, not take the first promotion.

Of course there is a whole slew of coaches who don't fall into either of those buckets who would certainly take the first NHL HC job offered to them. But the rule you are playing by is not hard and fast. Sometimes no credit is better than bad credit. The Sabres seem to have the stench of "bad credit" at the moment.

I was mostly inclined to respond because of the quote of turning down an interview.

The points you make definitely make sense. However (and now this is a different point), I don't think the Sabres situation is as dire as some might be making it. It could be a great opportunity for a coach to really turn things around, with many building blocks in place.

Hamilton was on GR. I am one of the ones that actually likes what he has to say and had some good thoughts.

Appert - Harder nose coach. Could be what this team needs, but not proven at NHL level.

Brind’amour - Actually good friends with KA. Hamilton seems to think if he wanted to move on from the Canes he would be interested here. BIG IF Though

Ruff - Been there done that.

Peca - Here is an idea i like. Seems to be doing well in NY and is a hard working player that would expect the same from his team. Again, no NHL Level coaching exp.

Any retread - There is a reason why they are not employed right now. Would be a bit skeptical.

A good point was brought up that this is going to be a good job to walk into. Owner with money, lots of skilled players at NHL and in the pipeline. Is it the best job, no. But the coach that takes this team to the playoffs would be treated like a god. (For a couple of years anyways)

Thanks for the recap- interesting thoughts from PH. Glad I didn't end up putting you on ignore 😛

It 1000% is going to be Lindy or this Appert. I don't think any of these names that we want will even consider an interview here.

When it comes to hires the Sabres need to find a candidate who overlaps all three things. In that model I think Ruff is probably pretty close to the top of the list.

    - Who they should hire.
    - Who Terry is willing to hire.
    - Who is willing to take the job,

This is a very real and gigantic hurdle for the org.

I think the best and most realistic chance of righting that under Pegula is likely something like bringing Ruff back in, getting us back into the playoffs regularly, and then "retiring" as President of Hockey Ops and being able to shelter the franchise from Ter-Bear.

With all due respect, I think this notion is absurd.

Anyone who doesn't already have a job offer will interview here. It's a head coaching position in the NHL. These spots don't grow on trees.

I doubt that's where this is heading.  What experienced coach is going to want to coach under Adams?

Adams keeping his job makes Granato's firing a rearranging-the-deck chairs type of move.

My guess us that Appert is named the new coach.

I'm sorry, but the reality is: 32 jobs exist in the world for this profession, and if one is open and you get offered one, you take it. Plus, the ego of a head coach-type is such that they will believe they have what it takes to improve any situation, even if presenting a great challenge.

  6. I got into hockey in the mid-90s as a young kid in Buffalo, so I didn’t see Gretzky in his prime. I’ve seen Ovechkin’s whole career, and I’m cheering for the dude. He’s a force of nature.

This is neither here nor there, as far as this thread goes, but…

During my time as a hockey fan, at live games, the person I was the most terrified of whenever they had the puck was always…

Benson might have a quicker and more direct path but he could also easily take huge steps backwards first. It's just the way it is, and we rush our prospects as a "plan" and it's not a good "plan".

If you are implying that the Sabres development "plan" for Benson was to play him in the NHL, I completely disagree. I believe they gave him his handful of games, and he showed that he was one of the guys that belonged here. I believe Benson forced their hand, not the other way around.

    Which part?…

Few would question UPL is the main reason we are still in the playoff hunt.

Levi’s big ego and big personality?…

My opinion based on his public comments and interviews after he signed and played so well early in the season… Levi loves the spotlight… UPL has a quieter confidence, I think… Regardless, when Levi joined the team on this West Coast trip (and presumably displaced Comrie), it affected the team dynamic, like it or not… Change the conditions you change the behavior… Hopefully for the better the next week or so.

I don't understand what any of this has to do with UPL. You think they should play him 5 games straight, incl. a back-to-back?

Also, ego can be a good thing in professional sports. Ego and pretentiousness (which I don't get from Levi) are different things. A very confident young goalie coming in (with talent to back it up) could also charge up the locker room, especially as there's a new leadership group. We're all just speculating, but you seem to have gone in the extreme negative direction.

17 games left. If we want to get to 93 points, gotta go about 14-3. Three losses to give. Gotta win the other 14 games, no way really around it. If we lose 4 more, it would be incredibly unlikely for the mark to come it at below 93, looking at the pacing of the other teams: but still technically possible

Yes, I'm also currently tracking it as how many more regulation losses we can sustain (3 being that number).

If we lose a couple in OT, that reduces the total wins we need by 1 (13), but also reduces the total # of regulation losses we can sustain by 1.

I’d rather not go into a season that could potentially be our 5th straight miss under this regime and 14th straight overall without being confident in the goaltending. I’d value that pretty highly and pay accordingly. I’m definitely concerned about backup goalie, in today’s NHL it’s 35/40% as important as your starter. They can go with Levi, but they absolutely need to be right on that evaluation, then

I definitely can see that. My worry is whether we have enough assets for other needs we may have (whatever they may be...)

Do you see a potential where other needs may be compromised by paying a high price for a backup? Or do you think other needs are not at the same priority level? Apologies for referencing so much in the abstract.

I'd think the plan is (and probably should be) levi as the backup.

He's had a taste of the NHL (good and bad) and by early next year he will have had another full camp with the team and about a half season in Rochester also. I would not want him anointed as starter, but I think, if you believe in him, the backup roll should be good for him by next season.

In theory, I think it makes sense. However, the idea of him getting as much playing time and as many starts as possible seems extremely valuable. I fear having him as the backup would not allow for that.

No.  A backup needs to be available on all game days in case the #1 gets injured or ill on game day or needs to be pulled because he's getting shelled or whatever.  You simply need a second goalie on the bench, period.  If Levi is racking up minutes in Rochester, he's not on the Sabres bench.

You could have a scenario where on planned off days (back-to-backs, etc.) you could call him up to give UPL a night off, but that's only part of what a backup does.  If you leave Levi in Rochester to develop, you need another backup on the Sabres (a la Comrie, but hopefully someone better).

Sorry, I was referring to a situation that you referenced: UPL's "nights off" being planned starts for Levi. I will edit the original post

  13. I'm excited about the prospect of UPL continuing (and even improving further?!) his great play into next season.

I've also come around to see the value in letting Levi start in Rochester. His incredible play at the end of last season was an exciting glimpse into what he can become, but he does, indeed, need to find his groove.

Is there a way to have Levi be both the starter in Rochester, and start in Buffalo for all of UPL's "nights off"? I feel like the Sabres hinted at a little of this during the current season.

I am concerned about the assets that bringing in a solid, proven #2 'tender might require.
