  1. The only thing that came to mind for me re: the butler is The butler serves up a goal on that dish to Mittelstadt. But overall I’m not a huge fan of the nickname. I think it captures his playmaking ability as a passer, but doesn’t represent the relentless forecheck side to his game.

Can someone explain to me in detail, but simply, what xGf% is supposed to mean, AND how it is calcuated?

Expected goals is a figure that is calculated based on past shots from different areas of the ice  and how likely they are expected to be a goal. There are many different models outs there that predict xGs, with different formulas (such as adding weight to shots off a rebound differently, or factoring in passing data).

xGF% is the percentage of total xGs while a player is on the ice. So with Benson’s 67%, he has been playing at a level that when the Sabres on the ice, the Sabres are expected to get 2/3 of the goals scored. Oloffson however, is an atrocious 29% xGF, showing how bad the Sabres have been with him on the ice.

To an extent the revolving door for youth should allow some calculated aggression in free agency. Maybe not the greatest example, but take Orlov at 2 years $7.75 AAV. Not the greatest value for the Sabres, but we have the space, and who does it cost us in 24-25 ?Jost and Krebs? OK those are JAGs.

The billion forwards in the pipeline should allow us to not resign some, and over spend elsewhere if needed to improve the team.

To an extent it feels like all the money saving efforts now are so we can keep the exact same 23 players for eternity.

EDIT: I will say I like the job Adams and DG have done. I am rooting for this one to work. But at the same time the preseason and this last game unlocked some of the last 12 years of baggage.

Orlov is a bad example because he was only going to a contender, or back to Washington. He wants to win a cup and is known to have limited his possible options based on that.

They aren't.. but there are people everywhere on the Internet who will be like that. This place is no exception. This is how people cope, they just come in here and go full on chicken little. Apparently they'll be okay... they apparently aren't suffering medical issues from their apparent stress.  There's just one thing you have to remember....

You can't tell them to relax, even if they should. They get mad. Then they take it personal and respond with "I know you are but what am I?" or "Your Mom" type responses.  That's when you get a good understanding of who they are, what they are about, and that unless you want to get drawn into it, you just need to learn to filter it out.

Not that this comment is wrong.. but some people love to fret and worry over things. You can't suggest they don't because that also gets them upset. Bottom line? Some people just like to be upset.  I don't understand it either, but if it works for them, so be it.

The game was crap. I could hypothesize about the pressure of RJ, the pressure of making the playoffs, the desire to want to do so well that you aren't relaxed enough to play the game you are supposed to play.  It doesn't change that the game was crap.  The Rangers were playing Game 1 like Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Lots of room to improve, but if they don't figure out the 1-3-1 and they don't figure out how to not always try to setup one-timers on the power play they will suffer immensely.  The Rangers just gave the league a blueprint on how to slow the Sabres down... now it's up to the Sabres to figure out how to beat it.

I'd say on to tomorrow, but it is tomorrow.  So just sitting here after my late hockey game, having a little Elijah Craig to slow the system before crashing for the night.

My team also lost, I told them they all sucked and their families will hate them. They are a joke and they get paid too much to play the game if they are going to play like that.  I also feel shame.. somewhere someone is going to watch the LiveBarn feed and light my ass up on some niche forum that rags on beer league players. 🙂

Getting mad or disappointed is fine. It’s just annoying seeing people act like the entire season is over, how we have absolutely no chance at the playoffs because we didn’t win last night.

  5. Everybody needs to relax, it was one game. I see many people complaining about the top line being out of sinc… they started last year poorly and Tage only had 1 goal in his six or seven games. People were freaking out about his contract early on but he ended up fine. While each game is important, one game says very little about teams or individual players. Last year we had some nights like tonight, and then we’d follow it up with a run of 5+ goal games.  It takes about 10 games to get a glimpse at a team and 20 before you have an idea if they are legitimate or not.

Though a loss after so long without hockey is disappointing, it does not impact my view on the quality of this hockey team. My biggest takeaways were the seeming emphasis on physicality even from early on, and JJP looked very good (although again, it was only one game).

This one is just in a different boat for me, because I saw more seasons and a higher level of play from both 72 and 24 (though Cozens isn't too far off, though he's cheaper than Power), and Samuelsson just wasn't nearly as much money

I'm not complaining, it just better work : )

Cozens signed part way through last season, and before last season his play was not indicative of the contract that he got. We had less than a season of high level play from Cozens before he got that contract. Power may not have been quite as impressive, but Granato trusted him enough to the point where Power was top 5 in the league in even strength minutes.

I’d take a goalie of his caliber no matter the contract.  Good teams always find ways to navigate the cap.

If I could have the Winnipeg Hellebuyck, it makes it closer, but especially with that term the Sabres Hellebuyck is unlikely to be worth it. Hellebuyck’s biggest weaknesses when compared to other NHL goaltenders are on breakaways and cross ice passes down low. These two biggest weaknesses just so happen to be the Sabres biggest problems on defense, which makes it unlikely for Hellebuyck to be as good, and when he’s being paid as a top 3 goalie, he needs to be elite. Paying him that much till he is 38 would be a bad move for Buffalo.

  8. Man, I really wish we would have brought in Toffoli. We could have put him in for Oloffson, and our forward group is set for the regular season. Then we wouldn’t be relying on Quinn being back to 100%/progressing until the playoffs.

It's going to have to be the Blues model because those two other teams were mini-dynasties (yeah, I'll make up that term for now).  But on another note, I hope he does start out like those three... but then continues on that same path for his entire career.

If the Sabres make a run this season, what makes you say it’s the Blues model? The Sabres are highly unlikely to peak this year, so if they are successful this season, it would make sense for them to be an established contender for some time after.

The past is the past. Are you suggesting they should hand out the same contracts they have over the last 6-7 years because they’ll likely win another 2 Cups in the next 4 years?

No, that would be silly. But this “reflection on how they got here” isn’t really going to change much. When Tampa built their team, they knew they were sacrificing some of their future for short term success. The short term success worked out as they won 2 cups and appeared in another.

Tage was gifted a spot when he first got here.

Krebs was gifted a spot he played  what 10 games in Rochester?

Casey was gifted a spot into the lineup as the 2nd line center his first year after his 5 points in 6 games

Were Tage and Casey under Granato/Adams in their first years here? Krebs wasn’t a Sabre during camp in his first year on the Sabres.

He defends extremely well, but he needs to stay healthy.

I also expect an uptick in offensive production.   He has the tools to be a 30-35pt player.

I’ve seen a few posts to this effect in this thread, but I don’t really see it. I think he ends up being a solid 20-25 point defenseman that is very good in his own end and reliable in transition as someone who makes the simple play to keep possession. 30 points would have put him in a 3 way tie for 62nd among defenseman in the league , which is a pretty high bar (low end top pair production). Most defenseman that hit 30 points are getting PP time, which Samuelson is unlikely to get.

Olofsson would be the finisher in this case.

While that’s true, I think this line may put too much pressure on Krebs to drive all of the offense. If he improves a lot it might work, but Oloffson is a pretty pure sniper, he doesn’t drive his own offense, and Greenway is a physical player that can be a good netfront presence, but also doesn’t drive a ton of offense himself. Maybe Granato unlocks more from Greenway, but as it stands right now, I think the line would struggle with too much reliance on Krebs to be the driver of play.
