Reading between the lines, it seems as though KA wanted to fire Granato during the season but Terry said no. Instead, KA had time to think about it and to make a plan. I'm not sure if that's good or bad, but it doesn't give me a good feeling. All of Adam's previous plans have worked out so well after all. Maybe the added heat from his own job being on the line will be the catalyst needed to improve upon his previous decision making process.

I got this as well, that non-hockey reasons were driving him not being fired in-season. And I’m actually OK with this. If he was fired Jan 1st, I’m not sure results would’ve been different. The damage had been mostly done. Plus, in all likelihood, Appert would’ve been named Interim. And if we went on a winning streak, then what? Most of the Interim coaches in recent Sabres memory shows they did well-enough to be handed the job. Would we have been satisfied knowing it would be Appert going forward? I’m glad we’ll be starting with a clean slate.

There is no way we’re paying Cozens 7M to not be the 2nd line center next season imo.

Well, we kind of already did this year. Mitts time on ice was 18:16 and Cozens was 17:11. Not counting Tage, if a C is playing better than Cozens next year, he’ll get more playing time.

FWIW Jeff Marek put in Hus Rink Fries Weekly Blog he wonders if Seth Appert and a veteran assistant would be the direction the Sabres go if they move on from Granato. He is the first national media member to bring up Appert

And let’s hope he’s not brought up again. The only way I would consider Appert is if, once Adams signs some winning vets, we give Donnie a 10-15 game trial at the beginning of next season and he fails. Then fire Meatballs and give the interim tag to Appert.

At wing they need a power forward and some muscle on the 3rd and 4th line.

They are close.  Some of the young players will improve.

Another key is if Levi can play effectively as a backup and play 30 games at a high level.  If he can, we should be good at goalie for a change.

OMG. This is like Groundhog Day. I swear these exact sentiments were said same time last year. It has to become true at some point though, right?

  5. Not only do they fail to get on the board in the 1st period, they also suck in the beginning of the year. To me, I think the reasons for this are the same. They are either unprepared or unwilling to play hard out of the gate. They prefer to respond when it’s do or die. I don’t know if this is due to coaching or the players, but it’s ultimately the coaches job to fix this.

I disagree and always find it weird that so many right handed people shoot right. A lot of hockey is played with only one hand on the stick. Why would you use your non-dominant hand for that?

The one-handed comment is probably the key here. If you are going to play with one hand, it’s going to be the dominant hand and it’s going to be at the top of the stick for reach. So, dominant hand is at the top.

Byram is a good player with high tier potential but was likely Adams' 4th choice nonetheless.

This is great and all, but “choices” depends on availability. KA can dream all he wants, but he can only choose from who is available. For example, there’s no way Byram was available at the time the Chychrun trade went down. Byram’s value was too high at that point.

Besides, there’s that little pesky detail that KA said on WGR that he wanted Byram coming back in a potential trade with COL for Eichel. So, basically he was KA’s first choice.

    He has a starters job.

Ullmark left due to his father's death pushing him to want to leave

UPL hopefully will have no such issue.

I‘m unsure which “he” you are speaking of, but either one had/has a starters job with the Sabres.

We don’t know exactly why Ulmark left. It could’ve been the death of his father. But, one thing is for sure. UPL could’ve also very well think he needs a change of scenery. One where he doesn’t have to put up with the Levi ball washing.

  9. Been thinking about this thread for days. I don’t buy the whole approach of comparing the Sabres to bottom dwellers. True, they all have losing in common. But there’s fundamental flaws in most of these teams. There are teams out there, no matter what they do, and they will still lose. Some say they are “cursed” or ownership or whatever. Who knows. But these are certainly not the teams we should use as a yardstick for progress. If an “educated” opinion believes they are, they prove they are likely part of the problem, not the solution. As such, their opinion should be ignored.

Can somebody also please tell this to:  Power, Cozens, Thompson, Quinn, etc.  I seriously question if this team has a strength and conditioning coach.  They all look like they're trying to become swimmers vs. hockey players.

Good point. Maybe someone should go to Cabo with them and help them select the right things to eat. Or make them carry their luggage instead of rolling it.

One other note:  I'm honestly a little disappointed with Kulich and Rosen.  I thought both would take a bigger step forward this season.  I was hoping one or both would put together a JJP or Quinn type AHL season, but it hasn't happened.

They are acting like they are already on the big club already. It’s odd we are not only seeing players take a large step back on the Sabres, but the Amerks too. More evidence some housecleaning needs to happen.

I agree with most of this post but emphatically not the bolded.  Please do not shout down hockey opinions that you disagree with.  No player on this misbegotten team is immune from criticism.

It I “shouted it down”, I would’ve bolded it or maybe used the word “emphatically”. Trust me, the irony is not lost on me. But, sorry for having an opinion differing from another opinion. What was I thinking?

Was Okposo just a big vibe killer?

I don’t agree with this at all. It should stop. Okie was well-respected in the locker room. Maybe too much “best friend Dad” vibes. When the Sabres shipped him out, it sent a messages. Dad’s gone because you guys sucked. Look what you did. So, no more bull *****. It sent a message. In addition, perhaps the biggest message, with Mitts being shipped out, was “look, you could be next. Party is over.”  Unfortunately, I don’t think Tage got the memo.
