It may be a bad hockey decision but I could see the upside from a business pov. Struggling franchise would get an attendance boost and a general buzz. When Risto was showing signs of what he is becoming, it didn't generate nearly the juice of drafting Jack or Sam for that matter.

In a year when the "Next One" is almost sure to be an American.

+1. And he doesn't have the playoff experience Hossa brought on his arrival.

I don't. Especially lately.

Often times the play requires the first man to take the body of the puck carrier while a teammate picks up the loose puck. ROR seldom does this. Rather, he will engage in a stick battle to retrieve possession. He is effective, but that does not force competent puck carriers to rush a pass or force a dump. Eliminating a puck carrier to allow your teammate to collect it creates a numbers advantage and space. His first instinct is stick check. I differentiate stick battles, which are more skill dependent, from body checks and don't think of them as engaging in contact. Does ROR pressure? Yes. Does he force turnovers? Yes. Is he effective? Yes. Is he physical? In my opinion, no. I responded to the assertion that Jack wasn't physical. He is. He seeks contact. Does he reach? Yes. But I believe some of it comes from his inexperience. I hope he does it less going forward.

We will have to disagree on what we are seeing. The numbers are very representative of the style of play. ROR stick checks with the best of them. But his engagement is not physical. The hallmark of a Lady Bing winner. He is effective, but not from a physical style of play. Moving one's feet is not heavy, Heavy as I have heard it used is leaning on players during those board battles, forcing the opposition to go through as opposed to around. Finishing checks. That is heavy in my book. Based on this definition, Jack is much heavier to play against.
-
I dispute the characterization that ROR plays a heavy game. He is more of a finesse player when it comes taking the puck back. I certainly do not see heavy in any sense. Not a knock, just different. By the same token, reaches aside, Jack has a more physical presence. Not a bruiser, but he doesn't shy away from contact.
-
Not even close, he avoids physical contact like the plague and his first instinct is to stick check. It is why he led the league in takeaways. Not because he bodies people off the puck. The reach I get, and it burns me at times, but Jack is a physical presence. The wraparound goal was a direct result of initiating contact not avoiding it.
-
Jack has more hits than ROR and Samson.....Combined. I never understood this line of thinking, i.e.he is not physical, especially from such astute observers.

I've been fortunate to see Fasching live at Madison and Ann Arbor a few times the past couple of years. In my opinion he needs some seasoning. He has speed and great hands, but quickness in physical and mental reaction time needs time to ripen to the NHL level. He is a poor man's Rick Nash more so than the grinder that McGinn is.

Good points being made by all and I think the Flyers will make another Pyrrhic run out of the bottom 5. The underlined is the most influential on the Sabres eventual finish. I would rather, they give looks to some of the younger guys just to give them a measuring stick of where they stand in relation to a NHL career. I've seen enough of COR.

Yeah Chychrun looks like a 5 year NHL vet physically. If his game is good enough he is physically ready to make the jump. Tkachuk looks even better than the WJCs. McCleod caught my eye, fast.

Coming from someone who has never skated I would expect this. He is covering for to sub par linemates. An AHLer and a 3/4 liner. You bitch when he isnt responsible. Well tonight he is being responsible.
