  1. Hey guys, i came across this article today & thought i'd post it here for any of those who might find it interesting. It is a long offseason so if you're like me anything Sabres related is worth a look.

Some interesting comments on Sobokta & Scandella & Hunwick & possible PTO targets for JBotts to pursue. The last PTO we made was signing Cody Goloubef back in 2017. Anyone know who that is? I don't haha. While that didn't quite make an impact, i gotta say the writer made some good suggestions that could & they won't break the bank either.

    Happy reading!

I think it’s best to temper expectations. The guy was demoted last year to the AHL, but somehow we’ve suddenly made him into a top-4 defensemen.

We haven't made him to be one. It's that he was one, prior to the coaching change in Chicago where Coach Q left & Colliton came in.

He was playing 20-25 minutes a night with Duncan Keith & then almost immediately after the coaching change had his ice time diminish.

So 1 coach felt he was good enough to play with Keith, the other didnt. One is Joel Quenneville, the other Jeremy Colliton.

Who should we believe had a better handle on who Jokiharju was as a player? Not surprising that lots of fans are hoping Coach Q's evaluation was the right one, especially given his experience & success as a head coach.

But fans here aren't just making him out to be a top 4 dman from thin air. There is good reason to hope he can be that in the future, as always time will tell.

He's a steal based on 26 goals and 56 points last year.  49 goals last two seasons on a crappy OTT team.

We paid more for an injury prone Johannson

Yep. I like the addition of Johansson but thats kind of what i was thinking myself. Canes got a great deal there.

Really hope Mojo stays healthy, otherwise i'll look back to this & get even more depressed lol.

If we don’t make another move, I’d ice:

    Dahlin Ristolainen

    McCabe Montour

    Scandella Miller

Good writeups today. I appreciate all the time & detail in your posts & i largely agree with everything you said. With the exception of pairing Risto with Dahlin.

I think our D pairings require balance & with that i think you want to have Dahlin paired with a solid defensive minded player who can cover for him. You'd want to give Dahlin the freedom to take his offensive chances since thats where he dazzles. If they were together I wouldn't want Dahlin to curtail his offensive game for the sake of covering for Risto, since Risto is known for being out of position & being overzealous (in a good way imo) with checking the opposition & taking chances of his own. I'd much rather see Montour up there or Bogo if he were healthy or even McCabe although i dont see McCabe as a 1st pairing obviously. Maybe 1 day Borgen or Johnson can play with Dahlin.

But while having Dahlin & Risto together sounds appealing, across the league from what i've seen the best pairings are those that have balance. Besides from what i already stated, putting Risto on the 2nd pair may help Risto's game as well. Playing less minutes against easier competition (for lack of a better word), may be just what the doctor ordered with his game. And would give our pairings (hate to say it again), more balance down the lineup for that 1, 2 punch.

Regardless its fun to think about how everything will fit together as in years past it felt like we were playing 3 card Monte with trying to find something that would work. We now have some actual NHL'ers on our roster & its gonna be interesting to see with HCRK does with them.

Johnson doesn't turn 18 until the end of July.  He is a fast puck moving LHD and is over 5 year younger then the other LHD prospect with a similar skill set Pilut.  Looking at this prospect depth chart it's pretty easy to see where he fits long-term.

I think thats what the issue is that some have with the pick. Yes this pick fills a long term need of sorts, but in the what, 3-5 year range down the road? But given our needs & our current window, some fans (myself included) were hoping for someone who could help a bit earlier. And specifically help with scoring. Either with the draft selection itself or with trading the pick in a package for a return player of some sort.

So perhaps thats where some of the consternation comes with this pick. I think we all expected us to draft a dman in the 1st half of the draft, but given our needs for more scoring this pick was just a bit of a let down. Even if he turns out to be good, albeit 4 or 5 years from now.

  6. Donskoi is a player lots of teams will covet. Especially IF the Sharks decide to move on from him. Although he's come out publicly stating his desire to stay on with them, so its really up to San Jose on this one. But yeah IF he's available & the bidding war amongst teams doesnt push the cost up too high, he's definitely 1 player we should target.

Yes he had a 35 game scoreless drought last season, but you can see the value of his game.

  7. Dahlin has said in past interviews that the one timer was something he wasn't used to doing in the past & that given how much it was used & how important it was, that it'd be 1 part of his game that he was really gonna work on. So i imagine he's doing just that & going forward it'll be much improved from last year.

I do not disagree with your assessment here. But...………..

Risto at 5.4 mil for 3 more seasons, given his point production, is, in my opinion, a worthy offensive D man. I would prefer they get a shutdown LD to ride with him on the 2nd pairing. Who that might be and what it would cost to get him is a conversation worth having maybe, no?

Also, while we are discussing D, RHD's Risto, Bogosain, Montour, Nelson, LHD's Dahlin, Scandella, McCabe, Hunwick, (Pilut down in the AHL as of now)

There are of course a couple of 21/22 yr olds in the AHL that may show a push, we just never truly know.

But, when I look at those listed that have actually played more than a handful of NHL games, and this is just my take is all, but Scandella and Hunwick would appear to me in any event, to be the odd men out. Leaving an opportunity to hunt down a shutdown LHD to partner with Risto.

I am not overly familiar with players reportedly available such as Trouba or Ceci or Honka, but here is a list I found that may provide the type of D man/D men we could possibly need.

Off this list, who interests you, and why?

Since this is a Skinner thread this isn't the right place to address this but for lack of another way to respond i'll add a name i didnt see on ur list that i'd like.

Jake Gardiner from Toronto. With the other priorities the Leafs have, maybe we could get him. I'd love to see him in the blue & gold. But with Zaitsev asking to be moved, idk how the Leafs don't make sure Gardiner is signed. But he'd be great imo.

As for Skinner. Sure i'd like to have signed him for $500k less per year but you cant split hairs at this point. We had the money, needed him bad & its a win for both.

For those naysayers bringing up the bad contracts we've had before, i don't see him going the KO or Moulson route. None of those players in terms of even strength scoring were ever in a list with McDavid, P.Kane, Draisaitl or Ovechkin. Yet alone the other stats one could point to. Skinner is a much better player & trying to compare him & his contract to those guys is just absurd.

Our watch has ended, now we can go for the throne!

Exactly. Overpaying the next Okposo isn't going to get us out of this mess.

Yeah while i do think Lee is a better player than Okposo there's no way he is worth that term & money for our team. Plus i don't think theres any way the NYI lets Lee walk. He's too important to their team right now & is their Captain.

  10. I don't have any sympathy for Berglund for quitting on the team. You don't like not getting playing time? You give the coaches a reason to play you more. You play so good that fans & critics alike get on Housleys case to give you more playing time. Sulking, complaining, giving up, quitting are absolutely the wrong way to go about it. Dudes supposed to be a professional. A 10-11 year vet. Guy plays the 1st 25% of a season & quits? Gtfo here with that.

If he had personal issues going on, I'd be more inclined to give him a break, even tho you're still a man & you have a job to do & you're supposed to do it.

These cry me a river Berglund articles tick me off a bit. Boohoo you were making millions of dollars & didnt like how you were being used. He probably was pissed at being traded in the 1st place, never got over it & it carried over to his play. If he couldnt man up then walking away was the best thing for him & our team. But nobody should feel sorry for him. If anything people should feel sorry for us investing in him. If Jbots didnt think he was getting a viable player back from St Louis as part of that package, he probably wouldn't have made that trade. So we're the ones that got screwed. Writers should write about that.

  11. I keep refreshing this page looking for an update on the contract situation. Lots of people saying today is the day.

You've guys all made lots of good points on the pros & cons of the deal. While the back half of the contract does scare me a bit, I still don't think it'll turn into an Okposo or Moulson kinda thing. That bar is pretty low lol. Skinners shot is/was better than both of theirs, as is his skating. So if he falls off maybe 15-18 goals per year would be his floor.

All conjecture of course. I personally think Skinner is worth $7mil x 8 but no way in hell does JBots let him walk. So around $70 mil over 8 it is i'm guessing

Below average shot, not a threat to score from the outside.  Career goal %:

He only puts up numbers when playing with Eichel.

An inconsistent player, disappears from the scoresheet for long stretches.

    image.png

Not to play devils advocate, but "only putting up points when playing with Eichel & disappearing from the scoresheet for stretches" could also be applied to Skinner for this past season. For Reinhart its a ding on him for scoring primarily from the inside, but when people talk about Skinner scoring from the inside, they talk about it as 1 of his strengths. We need that inside presence imo, & Reinhart is 1 of the guys we have who's not afraid to be around the net & is pretty productive there. And at what, 23 years old, has lots of room to grow.

This is Skinners Goals area chart, unless i'm mistaken it's not that drastically different from Reinharts. What is he, 2%  points better from the top circle & 6% on the bottom? Skinner no doubt is a better sniper, but i think Reinhart is the more complete player. Give him another few years of growth where he's the same age as Skinner is now & crosses that threshold from young man to man & he'll be stronger on his skates. I bet at 23 Skinner wasnt as strong on his skates as he is now. image.thumb.png.381fc182cfb0f6af3c00f55b67875484.png

  13. Hey after the slug aka the urine soaked mullet aka the bee that got smeared across your windshield, in all honesty this logo could've been a lot worse.

This logo doesn't excite me like i wish it would've, but I'm not embarrassed by it either. It serves its purpose i guess, even if it is a bit uninspiring.

Was there a post I missed?  The tweet I saw was (forgive me if I missed/added a word) "someone asked a question about Yakupov".  There's zero context there.

I didnt hear the interview but the context with that question even being asked would require one to know who Yakupov even is, which i assumed you had. Yakupov was the 1st overall draft pick of the Oilers back in 2012 i think. And as i said in my previous post, Yakupov had his greatest success with Krueger. So with that as a baseline, given the youth of our roster & having similar situations with other players as he had with Yakupov, given that context one could infer what the question was. Such was my attempt to answer it for you ?
