Thinking about this in the context of what @inkman was saying about how seriously we should take these things.

If I put my PR hat on, I think Adams gave the fans what they wanted: he switched from aw shucks mode to I'm pissed mode, called the players out for lack of accountability, took some personal responsibility and took dramatic, concrete action by sacrificing the most obvious lamb.

I don't know that he really could have done much more in terms of getting people to lower their pitchforks.

It was a little surprising and very interesting and it set a proper tone for next season.

It remains meaningless until they start playing games for real again.

I want the playoffs. So far has given me nothing. Tiktok mofo. Another lazy offseason of adding Josts and Lyubushkins and not only will this press conference be forgotten, he will too.

  2. There has been a lot of talk about Owen Power this offseason already. Was he good? Was he good enough? Was he bad?

Stats are limited to defenders that played at least 500mins at 5v5

Owen Power ranked 71st in 5v5 cf% at 51.55% which is on the same level is a player like Hedman, Suter, or Samuelsson (all less than .3% higher). He was 131 out of 271 players in xGF% with 48.5%. Finally he was 46.05% for HDCF% which is 162 but better than Byram.

Now I specifically am only looking at his 5v5 play here but we can see a player who does tilt the ice overall in his teams favor but when it comes to quality chances against, was not as good at all. Those numbers are more akin to a 4/5 defender than the 2/3 defender we need. In fact his HDCF is bottom pairing stuff.

My take away here is that Owen Power had a mediocre 2nd season. That said all his numbers are only slightly down from what his first season was, like .5 or less we are talking. I think this indicates a few things. First, Power did not make a jump up from his rookie year but also didnt really slump, he just kinda middled around. This indicates a level of stalled growth. Second, Power is still very young at only 21yrs old so patience to a degree is warranted here. Third, the counting stats back up the fancy stats, he did almost exactly the same as the previous year, g, a, pts, pm, +/- are all almost exact mirrors of eachother.

My conclusion is this, Power needs a big push from a legit coach this offseason. I didn't like his contract when it was signed and I like it less now. There is time to turn it around and it wasn't as though Power was terrible last year. Jokiharju was 200th in HDCF, 148 in xGF%, and 124 in cf% versus 162, 131, and 71 respectively. Dahlin was 104, 92, 31.

So there is work to be done all around and new coach can improve these numbers especially for Power but he needs to figure out how he is going to take that next step because this season, he just tread water.

Sidenote: Carolina has 5 defenders in the top 10 for CF%, 4 in the top 10 for xGF%, and 2 in the top 10 for HDCF%

You're talking in generalities. I'm talking about something very specific. I've outlined its contours above.

When the team captured a screenshot of Tage's "7 more years" IG story pic and put it on their account, my immediate reaction was essentially "7 more years? Dude hasn't played but 200 games and has one good NHL season to his name."

Together with a host of other factors, the picture seemed to be a bad omen. Sad to say that it was.

Tage scored 94 pts the season after that photo was taken.

Quick trigger… Kid exhibits High Compete… is 23… 6’ 185 lbs… Can put on 10-15 lbs of muscle with work and time… Would have no issue signing Krebs 2 yrs for $5-6M to let him find his identity unless the new Coach doesn’t see any potential.

I'm sorry, but what is this number? 5-6million? Those guys drop 50pts a year. Krebs has never cracked 30. Dude is worth whatever his qualifying offer is and that's about it.

I wonder if he actually has to do a stint in Rochester if he slumps

He can't go to Rochester next year

Aren't we still under "NHL or WHL" rules for Benny next year? Similar to Our Boi Savoie this year? Or is there a "he played X nhl games" clause to the agreement?

I don't know of any X NHL games clause. I don't see a scenario where they send him to Rochester even if they could. Why would we send a player who will be better than he was this year to Rochester next year? It just seems unlikely and doesn't make much sense.

I am not an expert on this (or really anything, but I'll save that for the couch), but I would think he is a good candidate to avoid, or have a minimal, sophomore slump. I am thinking it is because of his versatility - he performed in many different roles and was not necessarily shielded from situations. I don't know that he would be asked to do all that much more next year. I think his ability to play so many games in a relatively physical manner this year is a great sign.

I can see three potential scenarios where he could "slump"

    1. He puts too much pressure on himself to do significantly better.
    2. His role changes dramatically. New Coach either scales back his role or dramatically increases it.
    3. The fictional SabreSpace Owen Power Regression. Fans expect a significant step forward and when it does not come, the player is declared a bust even tho they are arguably played just as well or even slightly better their second year.

JJ avoid "the slump". He was a little "up and down" or "streaky" in his rookie year and that continued this year, but both the highs and lows were higher.

You could play Benson under Krueger and he would still be fine. Kid just understands how to play that 200ft game and be a factor on most of his shifts. Next year being 5lbs heavier and a full season more experienced, I don't expect a slump at all. I expect 15-20g and 30a as a baseline.

You might have the causality wrong here?  Most of Skinner's goals come when he's on a line with two other very good players (like TNT and Tuch).  Who was centering for him when he was in Krueger's doghouse and how many did he score then?

Regardless, my point was I'd like to see Krebs with 2 young, offensively talented, north-south skaters (again) before I give up on him.  Maybe Benson and Savoie (or Kulich)?

Krebs doesn't drive play. His shot is mediocre at best. His passing average because his vision is average. I could put him with Quinn and Peterka/Benson and I think we would see his play improve but you would see his wingers play disprove? decline? be worse.

Only thing I would add is if you put him between Benson and Savoie/Kulich the next common refrain around here will be "oh but he had a young guy in his 2nd season and rookie as a winger so that's why he wasn't good" If you believe that Krebs is good or can be, then put him between Cozens and Quinn for a game and see what he does.

I'm most of the way there with you.  If, IF you got an offer for him or he was requested by another team in a package for something of value, by all means trade him. But if not (and I personally think its likely he won't have too much value to anyone else at this point), might as well just sign him to a low cost deal and let him try to show you something (maybe a summer of training and some new line-mates help). If he doesn't show you any improvement, waive him and off to Rochester he goes.  No real harm.

I disagree. By keeping him you are not upgrading him and in your scenario the opportunity to upgrade him is now gone.

I think it will hurt Peca's career trajectory to go to Buffalo right now, its a high risk job for a first time coach.

He should stay under Peter Laviolette's capable wing and continue to learn.

Adams needs help.  Which is probably why he is looking for a NHL vet coach.  There are always good prospects without NHL HC experience but they cannot help Adams.

Sad state of affairs and quite ironic- our GM's learning curve is slowing down the teams development.

I can see Lindy getting the nod.

But it doesn't matter, the bolded if what Adams said is truthful. He doesn't want a first time NHL head coach, he wants someone with experience and specifically head coaching experience in the playoffs.

what a lot of us were saying for Granato era. Players need to be held accountable by coaches and teammates. That is pro sports. Once people are not held accountable things go downhill.

It is not even making specific mistakes specifically. It is finishing checks, forechecking hard, playing responsible defense etc...

Rewarding players that do that is also part of accountability.

I have, what i think, is an irrational desire to have peca as next coach. Combine him with solid NHL veteran asst coaches.

Am I crazy for thinking that? I concede i am in general crazy 🙂

Doesn't matter because it isn't happening. Peca fits almost none of the criteria that Adams laid out at his press conference.

  9. After listening to the bs coming out of everyone's mouths in that locker room, it occurs to me that this guys allllll thought even in late March that they would be able to pull this out and make the playoffs. This "come to jesus" moment didn't even happen until after Granato was fired and Adams told them what they are all now saying.

This team needs some adults. Idc what they say or the lip service at the end of the year, they had months on months to fix this and they got mad at fans and acted like they could just flip a switch and make the playoffs. The more I listen to their comments, the more pissed off at the team and organization I become. Completely out of touch with reality of what they were doing and completely leaderless to stand up and say they weren't good enough until it was too late.

It is ridiculous and pathetic that this team thinks Granato being fired is the "wake up call" when MISSING THE F-ING PLAYOFFS FOR 13 STRAIGHT YEARS!!!!!! is the wake up call.

I'd like to see Krebs center a line with some offensive talent before tossing him out with the bath water.  I recall he centered for Quinn and JJ in Rochester for a brief stint and did well with them (4 + 11 = 15 in 18 games).  His +/- was terrible then, but he ended this season with +2.

He centered a line with Jeff Skinner who had 24g this season and Skinner scored 0 with Krebs.

I’ve been taking this in all day.

    What a ****ing disaster.

Even if this is true - YOU DON’T SAY IT OUT LOUD!!!

Omg!  This frigging team.  Burn down the analytics department.  Revamp all of it.

I was of the belief Tage, Tuch, and Dahlin were better than this leadership wise.  Especially the latter two.

The ONLY explanation I have - the only one is that Skinner and his coasting and his salary just completely screws this team’s chemistry.

How can you sit Cozens or Dahlin (who the heck exactly did Tage think needed to be sat?????) for doing things wrong or not working hard enough when Skinner not only repeatedly is at fault for what these guys are saying today but he’s paid 9 million dollars a season for it!

Get him out of here yesterday.  Get 5 new players on this team identify what the data cannot - and that’s who are the freaking losers with loser mentality and get them out.

My guess is that list is probably one guy.

Screaming about the analytics department when Granato and Adams have clearly made moves that ignored analytics is dumb. They need to look at the underlying numbers more and rely on their old man hockey feels less.

I’ve learned the people who earn respect in the work place take personal responsibility or as some would say accountability.  Blaming the coach for not being motivated is a cop out and a sign of major mental weakness.  Could imagine telling people at work, I’d do a better job if my boss just pushed me more.  No one would respect anything you did or said ever again.

The coach sets the tone. Granato set a tone of mistakes are okay, my favorites can screw up, working hard is optional. He never took control of his own team.

Kirby Smart asked his team before they played Florida the first time a simple question, stand up if you've ever beaten Florida. No one stood. No one had. He made his point, his team would go on to beat Florida 7 of the next 8 years. He was in control. Granato, he wasn't.

I’m excited about Östlund, everything that I’m reading on him says solid two way player.

He needs to eat 3 or 4 garbage plates a day and move in with a nice Italian family.

We’ve seen tons of kids attempt to make that transition at the end of a season or in the playoffs, it hasn’t gone well for most. Noah may be just fine but it’s anything but a certainty.

True but the fact he’s doing it against grown men is a plus.

I agree with PuckYourself, he's played against men all year so here's hoping he's g2g.
