Alternate scenario: Team finishes on a tear in 22-23 and falls one short point of being in the playoffs. All the talking heads and fans expect another step forward in 23-24. Seeing the continued good fortunes of the team and the players getting more experience, Adams recommends to Pegula that Granato gets extended. After all, it appears that it is coming together. However, the good fortunes stop at the start of 23-24.  By the 20 game mark, maybe Adams is seeing warnings signs? However, the situation was bright just a couple months ago. He is a deliberate guy. Measure twice, cut once.

Game 40 rolls around. Quinn hurt. Samuelsson hurt. Thompson hurt. Does he go to Pegula and say - never mind... fire Granato? Oof. That is a hard conversation.  Maybe the convo was had? Maybe Terry wanted/needed to give him the season to straighten it out, since he just renegotiated his contract? Maybe the deal was that they would pivot to a better defensive team and then judge the results? Maybe Adams accepted a deal to change from Granato?

Maybe actual human beings are working through this, without the benefit of hindsight, and it isn't just straight negligence because the fanbase has been perpetually mad?

Life has more nuance than black and white interpretations.

The flaw in your counterpoint is, there was no finish with a flourish in 22-23.  Someone here already did the work to disprove that.

Man, I know times are rough after 13 seasons of no playoffs but I couldn't imagine being a fan and dedicated to something only to have it taken from me, it's got to be a brutal feeling that I hope we as fans never have to feel. He said it perfectly though, can we get this guy as our play by play? He already likes an ex Sabre player.

After 13 seasons I feel like TPegs stole the Sabres from me.

Old out of shapes internet bros telling a pro athlete that "it's time to hit the gym" is peak internet outrage culture. Cozens wasn't bad because he didn't hit the gym, he was bad because of terrible decision making and an abnormal regression in his shot percentage but why bother? For 14 years all I've ever heard here is the team needs to get bigger, hit the gym, bulk up, they are too small. Why change now?

    Carry on.

Nah.  That looked like a pic of my 26yr old son, who is def not a professional athlete.  He just doesn’t have the committed gym rat physique.

LOL at you of all people calling out internet outrage culture.

Guys drafted in his range in the first round 15th-20th overall....tend to be busts, or at most marginal NHL players at close to a rate of 50%.  It wouldn't be a surprise if he was just that.  Now, there are some cases where guys take a while to develop..they get to a certain age and all of a sudden, seemingly out of no-where, it all clicks. But usually you would see signs of that.  20 career goals in 215 career games, and 46 assists....its a little bit worrysome.   That is 7.5 goals and 17.5 assists, 25 points over 82 games.  Almost 3 full years in the NHL, a cup of coffee in the 4th year.  I don't know, it COULD still happen for him but right now I'm not hopeful.

Here is the bottom line for me. If it DOES click for him, I don't want it to happen while continuing to give him time on this roster. I think whatever ice time he would get here, its time to give it to someone 'better' right now.

Now, I'll contradict most of what I said and say you sigh him. Why?  I highly doubt you get anything of value for him in a trade.  So you sign him, let him try to blow you away in camp. If he does and EARNS a spot on the roster, great! if he doesn't down to Rochester he goes.  If he gets picked up on waivers on the way to Roch, well, you didn't want him up here anyway.

I agree with all this generally.  Look no further than our Zemgus Girgensons for what to expect from that part of the first round. The guys selected in this range are not often top 6 players.

I don’t really have an issue with signing him to be a bottom of the lineup player.  He is NHL level at that role, but its JAG level.  Jost and Robinson, or a hair above, are where he is going to live in his career.  As long as his contract reflects that, each team has those guys.

Preference is definitely to package him to a team just starting their rebuild for a bottom 6 upgrade though.

Who is this person? Do they have a sabrespace account? Would they like to have an argument with me? I’d be open to it

a screenshotted, random opinion online saying the same thing as you doesn’t contribute anything. It’s just a replication of your opinion. I could screenshot literally any argument I wanted to. Seriously, pick one. Pick the most absurd take you can think of and I’ll find you a screenshot.

What you posted isn’t even a take it’s just someone trying to write interestingly for an article lol “he traded some picks but they still have a lot coming”

    you got me haha

I dunno.  There is some convincing stock draft images on that screen shot.  It screams credibility to me.

As I tried to explain, this take is timeline dependent. His press conference was a retrospective on the entire season. Your position is that he knew this in real time AND those issues could all be rectified in a matter of weeks - from the moment of recognition to the moment of saving the season.

so what’s the timeline you think would be a realistic between recognition and saving the season?

My position was never stated or implied anywhere that he could rectify this in real time.  But he sure as ***** witnessed it in real time.

My timeline?  He had right up through the trade deadline to correct roster and leadership issues.  Donnie?  I think Jan 1 is reasonable.

So what are you angry about here? The timeline? Don was extended after last season. Clearly they liked what they saw at the end, but that changed over this season. I know the attitudes about everyone changes after every shift, but obviously Adam’s opinion needed time to change. So what are we talking about? January or February versus now?

I didn’t think it needed to be laid out so plainly to be understood.

Bottom 6 needed grit- didn’t react in time to save the season

Slow starts, arrogance speaks to leadership- didn’t react in time to save the season

Practice quality- did he address with Donnie at all?  He said he’s a hands on GM.  Where was his leadership? Was he not persuasive enough?

Donnie’s contract extension is whipped cream on top of the pie.  Evidence that KA is in over his head and needs a life preserver.
