I just did some mathin' I took the remaining games and applied the team's current point % to predict their final point total: WC#1 Tampa 95 WC#2 Detroit 91 Boston & Columbus 89 Islanders 88 Rangers 85 Montreal 84 Pittsburgh and Philadelphia 79 Sabres are at 49 with 58 available points remaining. 91 might be WC#2. They need 42 out of 58. .724 That's 21-8-0 from here on out.

As usual I was seeing a different game than the board. This was one of the best efforts by the Sabres I've seen. The two goals by CBS were awesome plays but overall the Jackets got nothing going because the Sabres were in their crap all night. Effort level 100% all night. I love it. Get #5 Saturday.

It's a steep climb now but every win makes it a little less so. The current wild card teams are on pace for 92-93 points. Sabres need 21 wins out of 30 to get there. Win-win-lose, win-win-lose.

Not only are the Sabres winning tonight, they will win Saturday in Nashville and go into the break on a 5-game tear.

Most folks conveniently overlook the hits the Sabres were dishing all game. But those hits were strategic and part of the flow of play. Not the bench clearing brawl many wanted. We also ignore that Lindy considered retaliation but that went out the window when the Sabres not only failed to score in a 5-minute power play, but gave to shorty to cut the lead to one. But like most things on Sabrespace, facts be damned when there's a good narrative to pounded into the ground.

Oh, Rob Ray must be a huge p-word now, just like Lindy Ruff, huh?

Look, I didn't say it was going to happen. I just spelled out what has to happen. Just for comparison, the Sabres went 16-11-3 in their last 30 games two years ago when they got to 91 points. That's .583. This year that only gets them to 82 points .

They are 11 back with 30 games to go. They need to play at .700 the rest of the way to get into the mix. By blowing another game?

There's a time and place for such things. Lindy put more value on not blowing the game by taking penalties.
