But that’s about a rule in a league with nonsensical rules abound.  It’s not, “do you know how you busted your ass for years to finally achieve the ultimate goal, well that doesn’t mean ***** because of Jay McKee’s stef infection”.

At the end of the day, one guy has his ring and the other doesn’t. Adams isn’t losing any sleep over that comment.

Gotcha. I'd be surprised if Lindy had 3 or more years left on his Devils deal. My guess is that a no double dipping clause would, if carefully drafted, anticipate a scenario where the remaining term on a Devils deal could outlast the term on a subsequent deal (and then likewise wipe out the Devils' obligation to pay in that event). YMMV, as @Taro T often says.

Well at least they don’t have to give away draft compensation anymore for hiring a fired coach. What a truly awful rule that was.

Good question. I'd guess no more than 2. There should be (?) setoff/offset language in the Devils' contract (i.e., no double dippin').

Also: Shoutout to a DEAL WITH THE DEVIL.

Yeah, no double dipping, but I have no idea what a two year deal does if you have more than two years remaining. I assume the original team is still on the hook for those extra years, but that’s just a guess. Lawyerese confuses me.

Or Appert will join as Lindy's assistant and future HC. Ruff retires or joins FO.

    Almost like you wrote it.

It’s subscription so I can only read the first few lines. That said, Lambert has always been a douche daring back to his college days. The first line at that link shows to me that he’s still that douche.

You’ve followed up your useless commentary with even more useless commentary. Touché.

Look, just because some guys aren’t cut out for head coaching jobs doesn’t mean that they aren’t very good at other roles.

    A 2-year deal?

    That's interesting, actually.

You hear that coaches don't want to be lame ducks. Isn't that what happened with Granato when he got extended in early 2023 through 2025-2026? Lindy will start out in the penultimate year of his deal.

Hmm. Bets being hedged? On both sides?

I wonder what was remaining on his deal with the Devils.

Arbour has zero loser points, Lindy 153. Doesn’t show how many OT wins he had.

I agree that career winning percentage isn’t great proof of a coach’s ability. And I agree with your point, even if it wasn’t the one I was trying to make.

Mine was that it’s kinda like ranking goalies based on the same stat. Too many underlying variables.

Just for the record, I don’t care one bit about the loser points. Those are ties. The shoot out win is the phony point.

Phil Housley, Matt Ellis, Matt Barnaby, and Ron Rolston.  Rob Ray as special consultant.

Just for the record, Phil Housley is the associate coach of this year’s Presidents’ Trophy winning team. So maybe we don’t mock him as an assistant.

I think it’s kinda interesting that career winning percentage is being used as a mark against Lindy. Here are 10 of his peers:

    • Darryl Sutter .498
    • Pat Burns .492
    • Pat Quinn .489
    • Jacques Lemaire .489
    • Lindy Ruff .487
    • Al Arbour .487
    • Mike Keenan .485
    • John Torterella .480
    • Dick Irvin .477
    • Paul Maurice .470

    And for fun:

    • Punch Imlach .452

The winning percentage of the modern guys, Lindy included, gets inflated a bit by shoot outs and the newer OT rules.

But anyway, I’m assuming these count tie as a half, but do you know if that’s the case?

  10. If they are going for a more experienced coaching staff, I wonder if he tries to reunite with James Patrick. It looks like he’s coach towards the middle/bottom of the pack, first year with a new team in the WHL. Otherwise, it doesn’t really look like he has “his guy” anymore, maybe Chris Taylor who was on the NJ staff.

I’ll be very curious to see what new blood he winds up with as at least one of the assistants.

This isn't a hire for the hardcore fans like us. It's a hire for the next level on the pyramid of Buffalo hockey fans.

Not the guy I would have picked, but if I'm honest with myself his resume probably ticks a lot of boxes if his name wasn't Lindy Ruff and this wasn't the Buffalo Sabres.

I suspect he's going to flame out spectacularly.

But I'm going to go with the way @Thorny is reacting because if I squint really hard I can kinda see it, and giving the latest move a chance is just the way I roll.

    Now where's my Scotch?

I’m not convinced there is a right hire for that group.

It doesn’t sound like the Penguins are going to fire Sullivan (from the Athletic):

“• Dubas praised the coaching staff and said the Penguins’ issues were his fault but also stopped short of saying the entire coaching staff will be retained. Rather, Dubas said he will discuss the staff with head coach Mike Sullivan before any final changes are made.”

Or maybe the Penguins’ issues start with them all being 95 years old.

Pearl Jam released their new full length album today, called Dark Matter. I like it so far.

I keep getting interrupted as I try to listen. I’ve heard bits and pieces of it out of order.
