You see Pittsburgh and where Botterill’s come from, you see the young players they have and how well they played, not only during the season but in the playoffs. Mike Harrington: For Brendan Guhle, new chances for a first impression
‘If Guhle can play 20-plus minutes a night for a winning team, that’s going to be a huge benefit for him. He’s not getting that in the NHL — yet — even if he makes the team. But you know new coach Phil Housley is going to love the way Guhle plays.’
Sabres Notebook: Sexton eager to build; Larsson signs; Zadorov thinks Russia
‘“I’m a passionate guy and I’m passionate about hockey, but I’m really passionate about Buffalo and Rochester,” said Sexton, who worked with Botterill in Pittsburgh. “We’ve got an opportunity here to do something that is very unique. I’m so incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to win a Stanley Cup or two, and I want nothing more before I retire than to bring a Stanley Cup to Buffalo.’
Brendan Guhle, other Sabres prospects must prove themselves
‘“My goal is to still make the team this year,” Guhle said. “It’s not supposed to be easy. You’re not supposed to be able just to come in and have a spot for me. I have to earn it. I’ll have to show them in the training camp and preseason I’m ready to play.”’
Sabres sign Johan Larsson to two-year contract
‘Larsson, 24, compiled six goals and 11 points in 36 games before a dislocated elbow and wrist ended his season Dec. 31. Before getting hurt, Larsson usually pivoted the Sabres’ third line, showcasing a tenacious two-way game.’
Sabres sign F Larsson for two years
‘The 5-foot-11, 200-pound Larsson has registered 22 goals and 48 points in five seasons, the last four with the Sabres. He scored a career-high 10 goals in 2015-16.’
Sexton ready to lead the Amerks back to the top
‘”We were incredibly fortunate to work with great people in Pittsburgh and capture two Stanley Cups,” said Sexton with the media following the first session of development camp. “For most of my career I’ve been a builder, and I was able to achieve the ultimate prize in Pittsburgh. When Jason asked me to come aboard, I thought this was the just the perfect opportunity to start to rebuild another championship team. I know it’s kind of an old saying, but it was too good of an opportunity to pass on.”‘
Guhle is excited about having Housley here
‘Guhle is spending the summer trying to add some weight. He told me he’s almost to 200 pounds. He wants to stay at that weight and then work on his skills for the rest of the summer. He said, “I feel stronger, more powerful in my skating, my shot feels more strong.”’
Sabres get Larsson signed to a two-year deal
‘Larsson has had good success the past two season playing with Marcus Foligno and Brian Gionta. Foligno has been traded to Minnesota and Gionta has not been re-signed. If I had to slot him now, I’d have him between Benoit Pouliot and Jason Pominville.’
Fresh start, same goal for Fasching & Baptiste as Development Camp begins
‘”I’m just trying to keep learning and obviously keep getting better and staying healthy is obviously going to be a big thing for me moving forward,” Fasching told reporters after the first skating session. “Obviously being hurt was not fun. I don’t want to do that again. Otherwise just have fun with it and keep moving forward.”‘
