It’s a great move for PK. He’s already widely-regarded as a guy whose career will be shortened by his style of play, but this could slow that down a touch. Granted as long as he keeps leaving his feet to make hits — like he did before getting boarded Friday – he’s going to be a target (Additionally, it would’ve been nice for Rick Jeanneret or Harry Neale to mention that the reason Kaleta was boarded was because he tried to kill a guy).
On Wednesday, Mark Pysyk (+2) collected two assists as Edmonton lost a 5-4 shootout decision to Prince George. Inspired by his World Junior Selection Camp invite, Pysyk was active throughout including an effective final 1:30 of the OT with the Oil Kings on the penalty kill. The OKs captain now has 10 assists through 22 games.
Buffalo’s special teams were on fire with three power-play goals. Ryan Miller earned his 18th career shutout and first of the season, making 19 saves. Rookie Tyler Ennis earned the first three-point game of his NHL career, with three additional players each having multiple-point games. One was Drew Stafford, who returned tonight after an 11-game absence due to a shoulder injury. Derek Roy and Thomas Vanek also played excellent.
‘"At times, it has been frustrating, but I knew it was a kind of a matter of time," he said. "I knew I was getting opportunities that weren’t finding a hole, and finally I was able to get a loose puck that Staff pushed to me. It was nice to be able to get one."’
‘The coup de grace came 69 seconds later as Thomas Vanek got locked up in some pushing and Kaleta piled in to pound on Derek Dorsett. With a bruising series of lefts, Kaleta brought the crowd to its feet and scored the KO, washing his hands away of Dorsett as he went to the penalty box as the fans roared.’
‘“It’s a good night when you can kind of get forgotten a little bit,” Miller said. “I have no problem with that. We played a good game, and it’s good to see. The puck went in the back of the net, we were able to control the play, and we played good defense. From where I’m standing, that’s probably one of our better overall efforts.”’
‘”That was one of our better overall efforts this year,” Miller said.’
‘That was the most complete effort by the team this season. They buried their second and third chances early in the game, and never let off of the gas.’
