Grier plays like a coach on the ice

‘”He just knows the game so well,” co-captain and longtime friend Chris Drury said Tuesday. “I think up and down the room, if you have a question about the game, whether it’s a tactical thing, penalty killing, even power play – even though he’s not on it he watches every one of them – he’s always got little tips and pointers. He’s great.”‘

Fourth line is first-rate for Sabres

‘They’re not carrying the team. But they’re sure lifting it. Some teams use the fourth line as an afterthought. Buffalo’s fourth line has been a constant source of energy and inspiration – perhaps the most vivid reflection of the depth and character of the league’s hottest team.’

Kalinin breaks finger, will miss time

‘”He’s got a hairline fracture in his finger,” coach Lindy Ruff said Tuesday. “That’s going to be short term, maybe a week to 10 days until the swelling goes down. He finished the game with it, but after the game it started to swell up, and (Monday) it got even worse.”‘

Sabres vs. Stars

‘The Stars have scored a power-play goal in a team-record 18 games in a row.’

How Darcy Regier Has Failed the Sabres

'Darcy's made some nice trades. In fact, with the acquisitions of players like Briere, Dumont, Lydman, Drury, Grier, and Hecht, he's been able to assemble what looks like a playoff team the hard way, through trade. But he's missed in some vital areas that are the difference between mediocrity and dominance. Which is why, in my view, to date, Darcy has been a failure as the Sabres' GM.'

An unlikely star

'Gaustad, a former Portland Winter Hawks player, is proving that dreams can come true for seventh-round draft picks with suspect skating ability. And he's proving even more than that, becoming the first Portland-area player to skate a regular shift in the NHL.'
