'Teams were allowed to protect 18 skaters and two goaltenders. The Sabres had 29 players eligible for the waiver draft, but they exposed only one who spent time with them last season: center Chris Taylor. The others left unprotected were forwards Christian Matte, Francois Methot and Darren Van Oene, defensemen Rory Fitzpatrick, Doug Houda, Mike Hurlbut and Mario Larocque and goaltender Tom Askey.'

'Sent down were forwards Jeremy Adduono, Christian Matte, Francois Methot and Darren Van Oene. The cuts leave the Sabres with 28 players, five above the roster limit for the start of next week's regular season.'
'Ruff's future looks bright with the Sabres, as long as he continues to win. But post-season success or failure will determine how long Ruff will remain with the organization.'
'A fluke goal early in the third period proved to be the difference Tuesday night as the Columbus Blue Jackets held on for a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres before 16,304 at Nationwide Arena. The Jackets took a 3-0 lead when Curtis Brown of the Sabres accidentally shot the puck into his own net during a delayed power-play call.'
'Former Buffalo Sabres' player and coach Mike Ramsey heads the list of inductees into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. Ramsey, currently an assistant coach with the Minnesota Wild, will enter the Hall here on his 41st birthday, Dec. 3, along with two other Minnesota natives – Ramsey's 1980 U.S. Olympic teammate Dave Christian of Warroad, and Paul Johnson of West St. Paul.'
'Although Sabres didn't bring a full A-team, they showed how well they can skate. Sabres center Tim Connolly (acquired from the New York Islanders in the Mike Peca deal) and right wingers Maxim "Tonguetwister'' Afinogenov and J.P. Dumont have extra gears in their transmissions. When the Jackets got a little lax in their own end late in the game, the Sabres buzzed around and eventually stung.'
'J.P Dumont scored at 14:17 of the third period for the Sabres. With their goaltender pulled and an extra attacker on the ice, Tim Connolly scored with 2:11 left as the Sabres closed within 3-2.'
'Martin Spanhel was credited with the decisive goal when Curtis Brown passed into his own net in the third period, helping the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-2 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. With goaltender Mika Noronen pulled for an extra attacker during a delayed penalty, Brown accidentally sent a pass into the Buffalo net 4:41 into the third period.'
'Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier has stated if Noronen can't beat out Biron, the team would rather put Noronen back in Rochester to play on a regular basis. Veteran Bob Essensa will be Buffalo's backup.'
'A second concussion in a 10-month span will shelve Rhett Warrener for the remainder of the preseason, but the Buffalo Sabres defenseman should be cleared before the real games begin Oct. 4. "It doesn't look like he'll be ready to play another preseason game, but (he'll) be ready for the regular season," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said Monday.'
