The Sabres Report - October 8, 2001

Marker Working Overtime To Pay Tribute [7:37 AM]
New York Daily News reports: 'It was up to the quiet Ranger, Brian Leetch, to create the most noise. With Leetch flooding the right wing with Petr Nedved in overtime, his slapshot, which normally wouldn't leave a dent in a styrofoam wall, bounced into the net off Essensa's right shoulder for a 5-4 overtime win.'

Marker Blueshirts Salute Heroes of New York [7:36 AM]
New York Daily News reports: 'The Rangers wore their road blue sweaters rather than their home whites. What's more, the traditional R-A-N-G-E-R-S running diagonally down the front was replaced by N-E-W Y-O-R-K. And when the visiting Sabres hit the ice, their buffalo head logos were replaced by the same diagonal New York.'

Marker A night of tears, then cheers [7:35 AM]
New York Post reports: 'On this night, on this very special opening night at the Garden, the very best thing that can be said about the Rangers is that they played like New Yorkers.'

Marker Emotional Roller Coaster [7:34 AM]
New York Newsday reports: 'And at least for one night, the Rangers backed up their words with a worthy effort. They rallied from two goals down in the second period, coughed up a lead in the third and took a 5-4 overtime victory over the Sabres on a goal by Brian Leetch, whose brother Eric, a Green Beret stationed in Kuwait, just returned to the United States on Saturday.'

Newark Star Ledger reports: '"Why should I hide the way I feel?" Kenny Nordland, a booing Rangers fan from Greenwich, Conn., said just after Lindros' intro. "Eric Lindros has never been a winner in my book, and this team needs a winner in the worst way. I'm tired of paying through the nose for lousy hockey."'

Marker Rangers post emotional win [7:32 AM]
Bergen Record reports: 'Leetch's goal capped a sloppy game in which the Blueshirts had rallied from 3-1 deficit to take a 4-3 lead on Radek Dvorak's goal 3:11 into the third period. They tied it with goals from Michal Grosek and Andreas Johansson in the final 47.3 seconds of the second period. Lindros, who assisted on Johansson's goal, opened the scoring for the Rangers with a power-play goal in the first period - his first goal as a Ranger.'

Marker Rangers pay tribute to city [7:31 AM]
Bergen Record reports: 'It began with the introduction of members of the New York City Police Department and New York City Fire Department hockey teams. Those teams have been known to drop the gloves a few times in their annual charity showdowns, but they were united as one as they stood on the ice while the 2001-2002 Rangers were introduced for the first time.'

Marker Rangers 5, Sabres 4, OT [7:30 AM]

Marker The Darcy Deal is done… Finally! [11:48 AM]
The Sabres Edge reports: Regier, who had originally expected a shorter-term deal, said it was the Rigas family that brought up the six-year offer. “It's tremendous confidence that they have in me, and it's a tremendous commitment on their part. Certainly it's a commitment that I take very seriously and I expect to fulfill it,” said Regier.

Marker Sabres, Biron blessed in first win of the season [11:31 AM]
The Sabres Edge reports: He's never going to swing Buffalo News writer Melissa Geschwind around by her hair and bang her head into a locker. He's never going to bolt from the ice during a playoff game and disappear into the night only to be found the next morning in an emergency room getting handcuffs cut off. And he's never going to show up for a press conference some day in a yellow cardigan rambling on about saving the endangered salamanders of Brazil.

Marker The new captain comes up big [11:10 AM]
Sabres Central reports: The Buffalo Sabres new captain had to prove his worth Saturday night in HSBC Arena. Before the opening game of the season, Stu Barnes had been appointed as the new captain of the Sabres. Unfortunately for Barnes and his teammates, Buffalo could only muster 1 goal against the Atlanta Thrashers in a 2-1 defeat. This time, Barnes was determined to prove his merit. Barnes came through, just in the nick of time as he gave the Sabres a 3-2 lead against the Ottawa Senators with only 57 seconds remaining. The lead held and the Sabres beat the Buffalo Bills in recording their first victory of the season.

Marker Sabres' Biron emerges from Hasek's shadow [10:52 AM]
Ottawa Citizen reports: '"Last year, on more than one occasion, it was a difficult decision deciding between the two," centre Curtis Brown said. "When you start comparing players, it's not fair, and obviously everyone has to be very careful. Marty, for instance, is a lot younger, but he has great potential."'

Marker Barnes settles goaltending duel [10:15 AM]
Ottawa Citizen reports: '"The goaltending, obviously, at both ends of the ice was unbelievable," Barnes said. "We played strong in the third and there's no question that it's a great victory, coming back against such a good team. It's so hard to come back against them."'

Buffalo News reports: 'The Sabres announced Saturday that General Manager Darcy Regier has signed a new six-year contract. As per team policy, terms of the deal - which was signed sometime during the offseason - were not disclosed. Regier, who has held his post since June 11, 1997, said his own salary is in line with the team's famously frugal tendencies.'

Marker Woolley taken off the 'A-train' [9:38 AM]

Marker Sens, Sabres provide an Isle of opportunity [6:49 AM]

Marker Sabres 3, Senators 2 [6:47 AM]
AP reports: 'The Buffalo Sabres have many leaders, but it was their new captain that gave them their first win.'
